Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Completely ignoring politics for a moment, Bomberman would be an amazing character. He could spawn bombs that unleash cascading pillars of fire; he could pump up bombs, bounce off of them, drop-kick them; he could utilize his various vehicles from Bomberman Hero or even ride around on the rabbit Louie. Fun stuff, and catchy music. :)

I have a sort of general question for people who want Chrom in the roster without the team up mechanic (what I'll endearingly refer to as vanilla Chrom). Why?

I'm curious and feel like maybe I'm missing out or not looking beyond the givens (another blue haired swordsman lord) enough. Mind you, I'm not attacking you for your choice, just trying to get some perspective.

For me he's the logical choice for the next FE rep. I'm more expecting him at this point. The team up mechanic would be a nice way to set him apart from the others but I think they could run into some problems trying to implement it. Besides Rosa already has a pair mechanic, well sort of lol. If Sakurai finds a way then great but I think it would be easier to implement vanilla Chrom and put Ike in the maybe pile.

Honestly, Robin would probably be the most unique choice for FE right now, but Lucina and Chrom would work also.

I'd love to have a Chrom & Lucina "Pair Up" character.

However... even if it were just Chrom, Sakurai could make it work.

I mean, look at all of the unique punching moves Little Mac has.

Point is, Sakurai could make "just another sword user" unique.

Y'all are delirious, Tiki for new Fire Emblem representative.

Let's go Mar-Mar.

Realistically... Tiki > Anna > Katarina > Shiida > Micaiah > Lucina > Chrom for female reps.

She is the better Ridley
when she has a dragonstone

Even if you used classic Bomberman alone , he would have unique moveset among Smash roster. But I already know that he doesn't have shot for slot in roster.

Smash Bros is Sakurai's Fanfic and we waiting to see how it unfolds in his bizarre way.

Why no Chrom? If anything, he's the most likely FE character to get in, more so than Anna or Lyn.....or even Robin.

I really don't have anything against Chrom. I just have a stronger desire for an over the top "gesture and tome" based spell caster which could be accomplished via Robin, someone who could weave the trope of the RPG thief into their game play via Anna or multiple iaido based swords people in the roster assuming Takamaru becomes playable. That and Lyn was my old Fire Emblem third character hype.

It's not that I particularly want him (in all honesty, aside from a KI:U rep and maybe Shulk I can't think of any new characters I really want), but I do expect Chrom to be in. It's definitely debatable as to whether or not the main character of Awakening, but he's constantly been promoted alongside the game (as opposed to Robin/My Unit) and it's the most popular FE in over a decade, if not ever. He and Little Mac were always the most obvious characters, imo.

I gotcha, thanks for that.

Ghost of Sub-Zero at a Starbucks had a great idea

I really really like this. I might steal it myself for something later on. :P

I believe that Chrom can find his way as a semi clone of both Ike and Marth. Imagine a character faster then Ike/stronger then Marth but not as fast as Marth/strong as Ike. He'd have aether and counter, roy's explosive charge slash, and his side b could be a dash or a sword dance.

When it comes to ideas you guys suggested that I hadn't really thought of before, but that I now really like, SS Impa is one of them. And I think it was Azure J who suggested Impa could switch between her past and future forms, which totally seems like something Sakurai would do. She wouldn't be a replacement for Sheik, either -- I'm sure Sakurai could craft a unique ninja moveset for her. And visually, her design has really grown on me.

It's official, Tiki for Smash Bros. We needed a female FE rep anyway.

All hail Manakete Queen Tiki.

A magic user and she can transform into a dragon. Major Fire Emblem character, great moveset. PERFECT.

Weren't there leftover files on Brawl suggesting a Plusle/Minun team-up character was planned? They might not be as topical now, but perhaps Sakurai will revive that idea, with a self-damaging "Volt Switch" mechanic like the one suggested by Subzero at the Starbucks.

Exactly, it's up to Sakurai. Chrom can also wield lances when he promotes to Great Lord so I can see his mechanic being the ability to change weapons or something.

Lucina can also do the same thing. I hope she gets strong consideration.

The funny part about the suggestion was that I pretty much thought of it on the spot. Before that, I imagined her as just being your average mixed magical assassin but then I remembered how Skyward Sword essentially featured both sides of herself very prominently and thought of how interesting it'd be to play as a character with a theme like time.

I'd imagine her having a lot of options but the biggest would be a "stance change" where the more youthful Impa is a high speed close combat specialist using her magics for distraction or to induce "witch time" like effects on herself or slow her opponents while the more aged Impa would be about setting up base camp and dropping projectiles all over the place that would distort the local time space. She'd also float around while sitting indian style much like how she guarded the sealed grounds.

A shame her classes are lacking...and her younger card self is technically better than her lol.

Manakete class is the only class she needs.

At least it can be said that she does bring something new to the game that isn't a Lord with blue hair and a sword.
I still want Lucina darn it

I always wanted B-Man in Smash. This needs to happen. Doesn't Konami own Hudson, too?

Oh man, I love this idea so much!! Bookmarking your post so I can bring it up in future wishlist posts. :)

It should be Sumia because she's Sakurai's favorite character in the game.

Intelligent System's favorite character is Tharja.

I'd love to see a pegasus knight in the game, but it has to be Marth's wife Shiida, or Cordelia.

I really want Owain, Kjelle, Severa, Inigo, Owain, Noire, Tharja, Katarina, Shiida, Leif, Tiki, Gaius, Cherche, Olivia, and more.

Man there's just a giant list of Fire Emblem characters I want and I'm mad that they haven't made a 2D fighting game for FE yet.

The 3 series I want 2D anime fighters for are Fire Emblem, Tales, and Shining and so far only Shining's getting a fighting game.

Totally agree. Also since we're on the subject, are you that guy from AP, who kept a Ridley avatar for years? I guessed as much from your name and avatar.

From what I've seen, on one hand Smash fans speculate too much around what Sakurai says and too little around what he actually DOES, especially when it's been proven he likes to troll and that what he says isn't gonna be true forever or at all. On the other hand, part of the speculation is based on completely baseless assumptions and arbitrary assertions, devoid of any logical basis.

He said Ridley's big. Yet Olimar has been made bigger to make the cut; it's mindboggling how many are fixated with this statement. He didn't even say he would never get in, while he did say Villager wouldn't work: guess what? Now Villager's working just fine. Words don't matter, things change.

Searching a pattern in roster additions may be useful, but is not hard proof. There are many things that could change Sakurai's modus operandi during the development of the game, even if he really folowed a pattern. Talking about being popular only in the west, or only in the east, being too retro or too new, being from an obscure series or a series with low sales. None of those things have stopped Sakurai thus far, IMO it's just that we rationalize each addition, creating certain patterns ourselves.

Yup that's me. I had a fake protest going. Ridley would stay my avatar until he was announced playable. After 2 and a half years I just gave in and tried out a few new ones.

Your final comment is what bugs me most with Smash fans, patterns where there are none. We have plenty of precedents but the idea of replacements, character slots, character roles in previous games and even release dates that form concrete patterns just irk me. Mostly when those ideas are used to justify why so and so will be cut. But what can I say? I'm certainly guilty of it just a tad.

I think I remember reading the interview, I think most of the developers or all of them said they liked Tharja.

I'd like to see it one day
or in an alternate universe where this has already been announced

I think the Plusle/Minun is a cool concept, but they just look so stupid. Pichu was bad enough; we don't need two third-rate Pikachu wannabes ruining our Smash.

Jeff (Mother 2) and Kumatora (Mother 3) would be my choices.

Yeah, Masked Man > Kumatora > Jeff would be my order of "most wanted" for a new MOTHER rep, maybe with Duster and Porky rounding out the list.

My partner and I were having a discussion over the weekend about Smash 4. I really want as many Assist Troghies and Pokeball Pokemon as possible (~50 each would be amazing, but unlikely), because I think they're cool and a great way to represent characters and/or franchises that otherwise aren't able to be represented on the playable roster (or at least not yet, looking at you, Little Mac). My partner was worried though that too much focus on ATs and Pokeballs could distract from other important features and beyond a minimum number goal, they would be a waste of resources since they effectively only amount to a short attack each. I can certainly see where he's coming from, but I view Smash as a sort of love-letter to Nintendo's depth and breadth of franchises and games, so to me the more you can cram in that pays homage to that the better. I really like the idea of ATs in Brawl, but I personally felt that their implementation was a bit haphazard and underbaked.

For the record, I'm very happy with the look of the ATs so far, as well as who is represented in the new ones.

I really liked the idea of a LM fake out with Luigi going around a haunted mansion with his flashlight and vacuum cleaner then Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde appear and Luigi is cornered. Suddenly they turn blue and Pacman appears chasing them away.
That would be an awesome trailer! They should make it a double reveal by also revealing LM Luigi.

Since Sakurai has no problems adding gimmicks to characters, Dillon should fit well with his ideas.

Like, he's the only character who can gain gems through fighting, and he uses it to build towers. We need a trap character like Dillon.
