Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Yeah, no.

Barely anyone guessed Villager because Sakurai had previously ruled him out.

Nobody was guessing Wii Fit Trainer. Can you imagine how quickly someone would get laughed out of town by the narrow-minded and unimaginative fanbase, if they suggested WFT as a newcomer? I like to think myself open-minded, and even I'd struggle imagining her, until Sakurai put all our imaginations to shame.

Few people considered Mega Man since the dialogue at the time was (and remains) that Mega Man is an abandoned franchise for Capcom, so he isn't "topical" enough.

Even Little Mac had his doubters because he's apparently not that popular in Japan.

It would be far, far, far more surprising if the leak was in fact coincidence, because the odds of guessing all three newcomers they showed at E3, with only six guesses, is astronomically low. Some people thought up 100+ possibilities and still didn't consider Wii Fit Trainer or Villager (myself being one of them)!
Wii Fit Trainer is definitely out of nowhere, and I don't see how anyone could have randomly guessed it.

All the others seem like fairly easy wishlist-y picks. Even after Sakurai said no Villager in Brawl, (and implicitly didn't pick up Mega Man), they still just seem like natural choices for Smash Bros. characters. Just like how Sakurai mentioned after Brawl that Ridley was more suited as a boss character, but people here still want him, and as a result leakers probably still 'leak' him.

Not that I disagree with you overall. The chances of someone getting WFT at all, or even being right for 3 out of their 6 guesses are both surprising.

So, no, it's not a lucky guess. Attending a week's worth of statistics classes should be enough to tell you that. Little Mac and Mega Man could be a lucky guess -- Villager and Wii Fit Trainer together is not.

Don't bring reason and statistics into Smash!

What will you tell us next? Geno won't be playable? Or *gasp* Batman?!

Sakurai's comments on Ridley, in a Nintendo Power interview, were that he was "surprised" by the idea (I think he was feigning surprise -- surely he's aware of what the fans want). He mused that Ridley might be a little slow, due to being so big, and that they might be able to pull it off if they gave it their best effort. It's hard to tell where the trolls end and the truth begins with Sakurai, but to my knowledge this has been the extent of Sakurai's commentary on Ridley as a possible newcomer.

I personally think Ridley would tick off the "unique gameplay" requirement by being an interesting foil to Little Mac -- while Little Mac is small and best on the ground, Ridley is huge and best in the air (even if his hugeness balances him out by making him a big target in the air).

Before E3, IntelliHeath held a roster prediction contest, and over 120 members participated. Here are the percentages guessed on the now-confirmed "leaked" characters:

Little Mac - 60.51%
Mega Man - 58.83%
Villager - 0.84%
Wii Fit Trainer - 0%

So, no, it's not a lucky guess. Attending a week's worth of statistics classes should be enough to tell you that. Little Mac and Mega Man could be a lucky guess -- Villager and Wii Fit Trainer together is not.

all dat reason.

Truth.

Maybe he can lean on his source to at least clarify the Palutena "leak." :)

EDIT: Ah, top of the page. I'll repost this the newcomers I'd like to see:

- Villager
- Mega Man
- Wii Fit Trainer
- Rosalina & Luma
- Little Mac
- Diddy & Dixie
- Yoshi & Baby Mario
- Takamaru
- Chrom & Lucina
- Palutena
- Impa
- Ridley
- Mii
- Pac-Man
- F-Type *

* F-Type is from Stunt Race FX, and animates like an old-timey cartoon!

Character Select screen has 50 slots: All 35 from Brawl (including two vet/newcomer hybrids, Diddy and Yoshi); Mewtwo returns from Melee; the other 13 newcomers; and
Random.

I'd also be down for The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta and Paper Mario. :)

Keep Yoshi as just Yoshi, replace Takamaru with a Paper Mario rep, and add King K Rool to the roster and I'm quite happy.

Also, if Shiek is still in I'd maybe prefer Ghirahim over Impa.

I hope the Paper Mario rep is Rawk Hawk.

I'm typically a jaded cynic, and I can't argue with that. It's highly likely we're getting Pacman and Mii.
And I'm stoked for both.

With Mii, it seems reasonable to expect the option to play as any of the Miis on your system (WiiU and 3DS both support Miis). This alone makes for hilarious possibilities. Also, the WiiU version already has a Wuhu Island/Pilotwings stage, and the 3DS version has a Find Mii stage.

For Pac-Man, I bet he'll be able to tuck in his arms and legs and chew his way through the air -- left, right, up and down, making 90-degree turns, just like in the arcade game. Picture Yoshi's egg roll, but with perfect control, and able to maneuver through the air. It would be weaker, of course -- multiple hits drilling into the target as Pac-Man does his chase-'n-chew.

He can dribble himself like a basketball, launch forward like a human canonball, chomp and chew opponents, spit out pellets like watermelon seeds, and belch up a flurry of ghosts. His arena? A pulsating neon maze, in the style of Pac-Man CE DX. And for his Final Smash? He powers up!

Also, their splash pages:

Mii gets YOUR head in the game!

Pac-Man chews up the scene!

I thought "Little Mac Punches In!" Was a little lame and looked fan made. It should have been "Enters the Ring!" All in all, glad hes in.

I guessed Villager, I knew Sakurai was not one to stand by on his word. Animal Crossing is popular and has wacky move abilities. The main point though, was that unless Sakurai taps in to C-tier characters or retros, there really is nobody else.

Sakurai still has time to cut Mii.

You're probably right. Whenever I read the interview my takeaway was basically "no, it wouldn't really work", but it's been quite a while. I googled real quick, this is what I ended up with:

NP: There was a rumor at one point about Ridley being playable. Was that ever a consideration?
S: I think that would probably be impossible.[laughs] If we had put our best efforts into it, we may have been able to do it. But he might have been a little slow. Would that have been all right? [laughs]

Quite a bit more optimistic than the way I remembered it. And it sounds kinda like he's goofing around and being facetious. So that's kinda cool. Still, the 'probably impossible' doesn't paint the best picture.

But like what I was getting at before, just because they couldn't think of ways to make it work in the past, doesn't mean they couldn't now. I'd say Villager was a fairly safe pick.

With all the pokemon out there now, I know it's well over 150+ by now lol, why have two pokemon that shoot a blasting ball? IMO, Lucario is better than Mewtwo anyway.

King K rool would be a cool addition aswell, because of Bowser. They could do something like Mario Luigi Bowser vs DK, Diddy Kong, K Rool, Team battle or something.

The choice of Pyrosphere for the Metroid stage in the WiiU version is a bit maddening for Ridley fans.

On the one hand, it's the perfect stage for Ridley to show up as a stage hazard.

On the other hand, it's the perfect place for playable Samus to fight playable Ridley.

In a dev diary around E3, Sakurai mentioned how he receives communications from fans all around the world, requesting all kinds of characters. He brought it up in the context of Wii Fit Trainer, saying no one suggested her.

I bring this up in the context of Ridley, because it's one reason I believe Sakurai would be aware of the clamoring for Ridley. Probably now more than ever, with the proliferation of Twitter, Miiverse, etc.

Whatever the deal is with Ridley, he's dragging it out. Whether Ridley will ultimately be revealed as a stage hazard in Pyrosphere, or a playable newcomer, or whatever, Sakurai is biding his time.

Part of me hopes that the fact they didn't quickly reveal Ridley as a unique stage hazard/feature of Pyrosphere bodes better for his chances of being a newcomer. Ditto for Mother Brain being an AT, and the apparent absence of a traditional story mode (although the single-player may still have bosses, for all we know).

I always liked the idea of a Mii playable character slot in Smash ever since Miis were announced. Then, I thought would it be a set moveset, that no matter how the Mii looked, would use? Or would we be allowed to make a custom movelist (ala WWF WrestleMania 2000or something).

Maybe we are in for a bigger surprised than we think.

Takurai talks about 3ds/WiiU interaction praticaly confirms that it has a custom moveset that you can create and transfer between versions

Mii has appeared in quite a few games that would be good for moves. A hang-glider recovery move from Pilotwings Resort? Swords, shields and sorcery from Find Mii? A trombone slide smash attack from Wii Music? Smacking tennis balls from Wii Sports Tennis, which can bounce around the arena? The Final Smash could even reference the Mii Plaza, with a stampede of Miis rushing across the screen -- including every Mii on your 3DS or WiiU system.

Didn't he hide Ridley as a boss in Brawl? I honestly believe he's the type to think Ridley as an active stage hazard would be very cool and exciting and would be a service to the fans. Personally I think it would be cool since we have yellow devil now too.

He thinks assist trophies are a service to the fans too. I like them, and really hate when Sakurai gets flipped out on for making a requested character an AT.

He's already hidden Ridley in a Smash 4 daily picture. (I'm half kidding; it could easily be a different purple enemy from Metroid, or probably all sorts of things. And ironically it looks too small to be Ridley.)

I'd rather see him as an AT, boss, or stage hazard than a trophy or sticker. But I'd rather him be playable above all those, obviously. I'd actually rather have him be a background cameo as opposed to actual stage hazard, but yeah, point granted. Playable would be great, but those other things are cool too for sure.

Just occurred to me: Sakurai confirmed 25 newcomers and veterans in Brawl prior to the game's release.

We are currently at 23 confirmed newcomers and veterans for SSB4. Chances are we'll go beyond 25 before SSB4 is out. I wonder how far, though.

The picture you linked to isn't working. I want to see this alleged purple creature!

The game will be coded so that when it detects an Iwata Mii in use, Iwata Mii cannot be KO'd. Rather, it just climbs back onstage, dusts itself off and buys back stockholder shares.

Will his Smash move consist of him saying "Please understand" as he proceeds to throw unsold Wii U's at the opponents?

Really? Works when I click the link. Weird.

Anyway, to see it, just go to the Smashbros Miiverse site, under the pic of the day section, and look a few weeks back for a picture of Dedede F-smashing on Pyrosphere. It's the picture for January 13 2014.

OK, I see it now. What are you perceiving as a "purple creature?" That finger-like tendril obscured by Dedede's flash? I think that's just a lightning crackle.

I see what he's seeing...

The one yellow light in the middle looks like an eye, and you could see what almost does look like a face...but if you look to the right, you can see another yellow light and realize it's just part of the background.

Yeah, the one just to the left of the tip of DDD's hammer. It's definitely purple, and doesn't really look at all like the lightning on the other side of the attack.

And it looks like it has a claw tip. But a lightning crackle could flicker, so it wouldn't be the same on one side as the other, and what appears to be a claw tip could just be one of the light rays appearing to create a dividing line between "finger" and "nail."

While I'm hopeful for Ridley, I do concede it's much more simple and straightforward to make him a stage hazard -- one consistent with the size he had in Brawl. Pyrosphere by itself might not be very interesting, but adding the monster it's known for would ramp up the spectacle.

A good part of me has the same feeling toward Pyrosphere that I did with the Punch Out ring.

I think someone above me mentioned this but it is definitely the perfect stage for a playable Ridley. Like Pyrosphere is to Ridley as Luigi's Mansion is to Luigi. Or Pirate Ship is to Toon Link.

Does that make any sense? Haha

An anonymous source emailed Sal Romano the week before E3 saying that Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Little Mac, Mii, Mega Man, and Pac-Man would be revealed for Smash Bros., and Sal Romano shared that information. The original source/"leaker" isn't the person who posted the smiley face; that was Sal, the person who received the email.
Incidentally, who is this guy? Talks about verifying who Sal's source was after E3 last year and his name seemed to come up often in regards to the MvsC3 leaks a couple years ago as well.

That makes more sense to me than the other explanations. It still doesn't look like lightning, but that seems like a reasonable thing to have in the image.

Sakurai still has time to cut Mii.
I honestly think that dumb REGGIE IN SMASH petition he keeps pimping at press events is supposed to be leading to a Mii trailer that uses Reggie and a few other Nintendo figures. I can't think of any other reason to keep referencing such a dumb petition that's asking for someone only a fraction of Nintendo's audience even know about, let alone still find the years old memes funny.
