Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Tingle can have more than 2 balloons, too:

Love me some Tingle and he was easily at the top of my most wanted list, but Villager's balloon recovery pretty much discounts him, I think. Real shame, he'd be fun.

Dun even sweat it. Many characters share strongly similar recovery moves. Hell, did you notice Little Mac has the same exact recovery effect as Wario? Yes, the balloons may be more specific, but I highly doubt that means Tingle is out.

EDIT: I honestly think Waluigi has the most potential for a crazy and weird moveset amongst the other two expected Mario newcomers. Which is the main reason I support him the most. Toad and Bowser Jr... well, Bowser Jr. could have a moveset based around his paintbrush and perhaps Shadow Mario transformation, but it doesn't really spark my interests. :x Toad is... well. Toad is Toad. I really can't think of a sensible moveset based around a character with such useless proportions (no offense, Tode fans).

Again, I'm not arguing -for- Toad, but I am saying the above is an invalid argument. Toad appears in another character's moveset? Swap in Toadsworth (which would make more sense for Peach, anyways, Toadsworth being THE royal attendant).

The generic issue ends with Yoshi, frankly. He is the namesake of his own series, but he is also an innumerable race of samey-looking dinos that can't be pinpointed to just -one- Yoshi. And of course, this goes doubly so for Villager, where you play as an avatar that neither looks the same from person to person (thus lacking a definitive "look") nor has a namesake in the title of the franchise.

Toad is an instantly recognizable character. It doesn't matter if there is one Toad or millions of Toads. Toad still appears in countless Mario games, many of them in a playable capacity. He's certainly every bit as deserving as Rosalina from a uniqueness standpoint, an iconic standpoint, a credentialed standpoint -- but again, I'm not arguing for him. I'm just saying that saying "Impa is like Toad and therefore can't get in" is not sound logic. :)
I pointed out, though, that Yoshi and Villager are both the stars of their own franchise. Yoshi and Villager are the main characters of the Yoshi and Animal Crossing franchises, respectively. If you're going to represent either of those series in Smash Bros. with a playable character, you kinda have to go with them, genericness aside. Genericness is something that can be worked in Smash Bros., yes, but I believe that talking about a generic character that is also the star of its franchise is a lot different than talking about a generic character who is not the star of their own franchise.

You know, when I first saw Villager's Balloon Fight move, I pretty much immediately gave up all hope for Tingle. I still thought that he'd be the most fitting Zelda newcomer, though. But now that you guys mention it...there's no reason why his balloon move can't be different, or even the same. Dunno why I was worrying so much. #TEAMTINGLE FOREVER!!

I think Tingle would be a great hidden character. I can just imagine the pure rage people would feel when they see the WARNING! CHALLENGER APPROACHING! screen with his silhouette. I'll never understand why so many people hate Tingle, but I'll love beating people up with him! lol

Ghirahim or bust.
Why would they put in a one-off villain in over characters that have become a staple of the franchise like Tingle and Impa? He's Assist Trophy material at best, like Skull Kid.
Even though I absolutely love Ghirahim.

Paper Mario would be good too, especially using his teammates as moves.

This is a random observation, but it kind of bugs me: Mega Man uses attacks from the first eight Mega Man games... except for MM5, oddly. It just seems weird to skip a game.

EDIT: I guess his down tilt is close enough to Charge Kick.

Oh yes, I would love that as well. I was originally hoping that Paper Mario could eventually be added in as his own rep, with certain partner characters being added in as individual characters, but there is no fuckin' way that's happening now that I look at it. It will most likely just be Paper Mario alone with partners who help him fight. Really liking that idea.

Still think Paper Mario is the best choice of the remaining Mario characters. Easily could wind up being like Rosalina.
I'd have to agree. Before Rosalina & Luma were revealed, I was hoping for either Paper Mario or Waluigi. I've always liked Rosalina and she was a distant third if I had to choose another Mario character I wanted, but her reveal has change my opinion on that—representing the Galaxy games through her and giving her a unique mechanic with Luma was probably the best thing they could have done for a Mario franchise newcomer. If we do get another Mario newcomer, though (which I doubt will happen, but who knows), I think it's gotta be Paper Mario. There's just so much you can do with him! There's a lot that can be done with Waluigi, too, since Sakurai can pretty much do whatever the hell he wants with him as his weird, unknown abilities, but I've kinda given up on Waluigi. If he was actually a part of the Wario series (Wario Land or WarioWare, either one) then things might be a bit different...but he's not, lol.

I would be happy with Paper Mario but don't want on him principle of it being another incarnation of the same character. Toon Link is more than enough.

Ghirahim or bust.

Yes.

We have plenty of swordsmen and a few magicians but no Magic knights.

That and the fact that he's delightfully batshit crazy.

I thought that's what it was suppose to be?

Yeah, Paper Mario would be an excellent character. He'd be flat, like Mr. Game & Watch, but with the added ability to fold and bend and roll in 3D space. Imagine a paper airplane recovery move. :)

And hey, if Pokémon can have six reps, Mario can have six, as well. (And with another Zelda character, Zelda will have six when you count Sheik.) ((And yeah, I know, Mario does have six or more, in a sense, if you count spinoff characters like Yoshi and Wario)) (((so many parentheses!)))

I like the idea of Paper Mario being a fast, lightweight (obviously since he's paper) fighter who is able to roll up his body and fold into a paper airplane as one of his specials. Give him a ground pound, some jump attacks, his hammer and some of his badge abilities, and I think he'd wind up a very interesting newcomer. There is also the added benefit of representing the Paper Mario series (probably the Mario RPG subset as a whole), which, so far, hasn't appeared to have much presence in Super Smash Bros.

Even if Paper Mario isn't playable, I think a Sticker Star level on the 3DS is probably happening.

Better than a character who is different but plays similarly to another. The logic of whether Paper Mario and Mario are technically the same or not doesn't matter to me as much as having a unique character in terms of playstyle.

Paper Mario had a console installment last generation and a portable installment this generation. He does seem like a rather obvious character. I think he'd be cool. Certainly a more interesting hidden character than Dr. Mario ever was. :)

Waluigi being such a blank canvas is the #1 thing he has going for 'im in terms of establishing a moveset in Smash Bros.. ANYTHING could be done, and it would work, because even after the 14 years he's been around, there's still little known about what his actual abilities are.

The various games he's shown up in are a strong example of what I mean. Using a vine-like whip in Strikers Charged to air swimming in Power Tennis, and then there's that weirdass four-armed robot backpack from Sports Mix. Every ability he's given is always strikingly different from the last. So there's a lot to choose from.

But yes, even with that being said, he's a minor Mario character who's given barely much of anything other than a saved spot in spin-off games. Doesn't mean he can't get in, but only makes it less likely for it to happen.

I await Wario Land 6 with Waluigi as a playable character.

EDIT: I'm hoping for Paper Mario some day in a Smash Bros. title, and I definitely think it's likely, if not already implemented.

I know Yoshi's New Island looks like ass, but I assume there'll be a stage for that.

In the meantime, SHOW ME THE NEW LEAF STAGE D:<

Class system character.

Dooo eeeeeet

I hadn't even though about it before, but Robin/Avatar from Fire Emblem Awakening easily could fill that role, rather than just being a spell/sword character based on the strategist class by itself.

On the flip side, hopefully the Wii U will get one from Yoshi Yarn, assuming the game hasn't evaporated. I'd love a stage designed off something like this:

So guys, just for fun, if the game's roster were designed by the people on Miiverse, what would it look like? I'm thinking:

- Goku
- Naruto
- Goku
- Shadow the Hedgehog
- Goku
- Batman
- Goku

Man, that was difficult to write.

Goku, Shadow the Goku, and Narugoku.

OK, serious question... why the hell is Shadow so goddamn popular? I was under the assumption that he was one of the most hated Sonic characters after Big the Cat.

You forgot Goku, Goku, Reggie, and Goku.

I'd easily sacrifice a Fire Emblem character for another Mario character, or even another Pokémon. Fire Emblem has to be the most unappealing franchise that has the potential to get a new character. Marth and Ike are more than enough.

Popular with the younger audience I guess? If He truly was that popular, I'd assume he would be one of the characters to get constantly brought back, but as of late its only been the three originals plus Amy.

As long as the 3DS one doesn't have this sickening colour scheme...

Oh man, I actually think I'm gonna be sick. It's just so painful for me to look at. I mean, sure maybe the game will actually be fun to play, but the initial thing you see is the visuals, and they really push me away.

He was that popular. Popular enough to revive from the dead for Heroes and Battle. Popular enough to get his own game titled after himself. Popular enough to be included in Sonic 2K6 as one of the game's three tentpole characters.

It's only been relatively recently (by which I mean 2008 to now) that Sega realized they don't have to shove him in every Sonic game imaginable.

I realize back then yes, but now, no one seems to care about his absence. I'm saying if he was as popular now he would be appearing more often. Frankly I found his creation stupid, Knuckles was enough of a rival honestly.

I actually kinda wish KEY had done a little better, and YY had come out and also featured Prince Fluff, making him kinda the go to guy for the Yarn games. I'd like to see him playable in Smash, but clearly that isn't happening.

Do people really hate how Yoshi's New Island looks?? I think it looks FANTASTIC in motion. No doubt it'll look even better in 3D!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tq16IKMA_c0

Seriously? People don't like this...? I don't understand...

I'm not in love with it, but I certainly don't think it's hideous as most people are claiming. There are definitely a few bad spots, but for the most part I like it.

That said... can't compete with the badassery that is Yarn Yoshi.

(don't know what they were thinking with that music though, hope it's not bgm in the final game)

One of the mysteries of the universe. Go to Deviant Art (if you dare) and search for Shadow Fan Art. It's probably just young kids who don't better. Nintendo has so many great characters and IPs It would be a shame to put in another one of Sonic's shitty friends. (I was already bummed they added in Sonic to WiiU). I'd rather have a Steel Diver sub over Sonic.

Yoshi's New Island looks better than the NSMB games

not that that's saying much, but it's not as god awful as everyone is saying

I think the reason people dislike the New Island art style is all the clashing colors and ugly mixed color schemes. Maybe if they had stuck to pastels it would look okay.

The character models in YNI are what I actually dislike. Yoshi and Baby Mario are weirdly blurry and often seem to clash with the background in strange ways.

Say what you will about "lazy" NSMB art, but at least it's cohesive and smartly drawn so you're never distracted in ways you shouldn't be. Gameplay first.

What I hate the most about the models is Yoshi's huge ass feet that aren't even connected to his body.

Yeah the character models are just overall not good.

Also, fwiw, I think YNI is better looking than YIDS; the course design always looks so pale and lifeless in that game. It actually does just look like a very cheap imitation of YI, whereas YNI is at least trying some different art styles, with mixed results.

I even liked the music in the trailer... I can't imagine how you can watch that trailer and not feel happy, it's so bright and cheery.

Everyone's always got to be so cynical about everything. =/

At least we all like Smash Bros. here, right...? ._.

C'mon. Yay, Yoshi's Island! Yay, Smash Bros.! Yay, video games!

Even if it looks like that...

It would be REALLY fun to see this game being one of the hardest plattaforming games in the genre, it would contrast so much to their kiddy look....

Sadly that is not going to happen right?
