Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

I like how New Island looks, I don't think the music is that bad (certainly a significant step up from the god awful YIDS music), and hey I even enjoyed Yoshi's Island DS a bunch, although it was littered with many glaring flaws that bring the whole experience down unfortunately. Thankfully with the babies gone, Yoshi's New Island will fix a lot of the problems by default, only one I can see coming over is BS red coin/flower locations. Or maybe new problems arise, I donno

maybe im just a weirdo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I even liked the music in the trailer... I can't imagine how you can watch that trailer and not feel happy, it's so bright and cheery.

Everyone's always got to be so cynical about everything. =/

At least we all like Smash Bros. here, right...? ._.

C'mon. Yay, Yoshi's Island! Yay, Smash Bros.! Yay, video games!

I dunno man. I was huge on Yoshi in my earlier years, but this just... comes off as the worst one yet. Yoshi's Story styled music would've been far more welcoming. Sorry.

BUT, on the topic of Yoshi... WHERE THE HELL IS HE? (I'd love it if he'd return as a not so humanoid dinosaur like his Smash 64 design...)

The music in that trailer is just very grating imo. I'm all for cheerful music but the "vocals" make NSMB's "bah"s seem delightful by comparison.

Kirby's Epic Yarn (and most other Kirby games) is cheerful music done right. Hopefully Yarn Yoshi will follow suit.

Wow, I guess I was too hyped up during the direct to notice that awful awful music....

On another note; do you guys think it's just little Mac that gets an interactive HUD (flames) to represent his gimmick or do you think Lucario might as well, to add another visual representation of his Aura increasing?

Perhaps, if the stamina meter for PT comes back, it will be repped that way too?

Edit; ah, how could I forget Wario's fart? That is another that could benefit from more visual cues like the new HUD effect.

Yoshi's New Island seems like it's trying too hard to be Yoshi's Island without understanding what made it so great to begin with. My problem with the game is the animations look very poor, which is surprising considering how top-notch a lot of the other 3DS games have been.

I'll definitely get the game, but Kirby is my platforming priority right now.

Little Mac needs the meter because it fluctuates whenever he lands a punch or takes a hit -- it's not a mechanic that's as immediately obvious as Lucario's (damage taken) or Wario's (time passed). Also, the power meter actually appears in the Punch-Out!! games, which is a nice little nod. I really don't think anyone else will have one.

That music, holy shit.

And the art style looks like a poor man's version of the Van Gogh level in NSMBU.

Yeah, I am not digging this game AT ALL. If it had come out in 1996 on the SNES, i might think differently, but almost 20 years later and it looks and sounds really bad. It'll have to get REALLY good review scores for me to overlook both sound and graphic design.

I wish they sticked with the crayon look and not make it look butchered. Though I've read that the 3DS can't do 2D stuff as well as the DS. I'm not really sure what that is supposed to mean though. The original YI is one of my favorite games after. Every other Yoshi game has been either mediocre, or I wasn't interested in playing.

Thankfully he is usable in Mario games.

EDIT: Oh boy, don't get me started on the music. At least it isn't YI:DS castle theme bad. Now that was just the biggest step back in terms of music ever.

It's disgusting and the music is ass.

It sounds like a bunch of people collectively farting.

And you wonder why people pick on you.
Mostly true but there's a few that pick on me a lot.
People pick on you like you pick on poor Yoshi's New Island!
And Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
:P

Don't hurt me, I don't think I've ever picked on you before! I'm only kidding...mostly. :P

But seriously, I can understand not liking the style of the game or whatever...but calling it disgusting? That's some hyperbole right there.

It's not hyperbole. The art style is awful. It hurts my eyes and some segments clash so badly. The areas look bland as hell and the music is another story.

The characters look weirdly disproportioned and previews already look bad (see Nintendolife).

Feel free to pick at me, but New Island looks bad to me regardless of how you feel.

The giant egg toss in Yoshi's New Island has the same worrying brainlessness that plagued the Mega Mushroom in the original NSMB.

The absence of ideas, and the unshakable feeling that someone is once again playing with the (now poorly digitized) skin of a SNES classic, makes New Island hard to anticipate.

But who knows. It sounds like those who stuck with the DS one found a solid and surprisingly challenging platformer. *shrugs*

Ok so I've never played any of those games except for Yoshi Story, but...I am not a fan of the music featured in the trailer. Hopefully reviews say otherwise about the music in the game.

Onto Smash related stuff: I do hope Yoshi gets some sort of revamp in this game. He's been mediocre in all of the games and there's only a handful of people that can be really good with him. I don't know what they could do though.

YNI's biggest issue is how everything looks "glazed". You look at a screen for the original Yoshi's Island on the SNES and everything pops and looks gret. New Island just looks muddy and has this weird sheen that only exacerbates the issue.

Baby Mario (eh)... Or maybe let him carry eggs around like Pikmin that he can throw.

I think it's clear you're the minority on this one

Art style doesn't jive but I can appreciate that they're trying to make it look like the opening/ending cutscenes from Yoshi's Island.

The music is horrendous from what we've heard with little to no redeeming value, and the fact that the story undoes one of the most charming endings in Nintendo's history is yet another slap to the face.

This is a random observation, but it kind of bugs me: Mega Man uses attacks from the first eight Mega Man games... except for MM5, oddly. It just seems weird to skip a game.

EDIT: I guess his down tilt is close enough to Charge Kick.

Yeah, and Mega Man 5 is my favorite Classic game, so that kinda bums me out if he really doesn't have a move from a MM 5 Robot Master. But do we know that for sure? It seemed to me like his trailer showed some, but not necessarily all of his moves. Hell, for all we know, his Final Smash could be something screen-clearing from 5 like the Gravity Hold. :P

yeeeeeeeeeeeah I am pumped as heck for Kirby Triple Deluxe!

Hell yeah, me too! I'm a big Kirby fan to begin with, but everything I've seen of Triple Deluxe has me feeling like it could honestly be one of the very best Kirby games ever for some reason. It just looks, sounds, and seems so much more inspired than Return to Dream Land, which I found to be good enough but quite forgettable. I just have this feeling that everything's coming together really well for Triple Deluxe. Even the music for the first level gives me goosebumps!

Also, for those not happy with Yoshi's New Island's visuals -- I get where you're coming from, but don't be too quick to write them off completely. I agree that the character models are kind of weird, but I played the game quite a bit at E3 last year and the world itself looks LOVELY with the 3D on... it's got a very soft, "fluffy," dream-like look to it that really impresses. But yeah, I can't defend those character models.

Really? During the same time, previews stated it was even worse with 3D on, with platforms in the background which were supposed to be in the foreground and fuck ups like that.

I still think describing the game as "disgusting" is definitely hyperbole. Disgusting is a strong word, and I believe very few games really deserve a description like that.

Regardless, I've only ever heard this opinion from GAF. Anytime I've talked about Yoshi's New Island elsewhere, people generally seem to like the game and its visuals. Then again, people tend to be less cynical and negative about things like that in person than they are online...

On the flip side, hopefully the Wii U will get one from Yoshi Yarn, assuming the game hasn't evaporated. I'd love a stage designed off something like this:

original.jpg

beautiful, love the aesthetics here.

I can't say I had that experience -- I really liked the 3D. But if I'm the lone dissenter, then maybe you are better off being wary. :P

Has Male Wii Fit Trainer been confirmed as an alternative costume? Does this grant comfort in assuming alt costumes will be a common feature?

Nothing more was seen or said since.

Sakurai's tendency to show something then ignore it is annoying:

Find Mii Stage
Find Mii boss?
New Leaf Stage
MFT
KI Wii U stage

I can see something like this happening; a Reggie Mii reveal trailer. But at the end, Sakurai discusses how the Mii just takes the appearance of any Mii you choose, so Reggie is only pseudo playable.

Yeah, I definitely see that happening with either Reggie or Iwata. (Iwata seems like a safer bet because people in Japan probably won't know Reggie but will absolutely know Iwata.)

With Mario getting a newcomer in Rosalina & Luma, a Zelda newcomer seems likely, doesn't it? But who to pick, who to pick... I'd really like to see Impa.

I was really gunning for MM Skull Kid, but that seems unlikely now... ;__;
Right now, my Zelda most-wanted list is:

1) Impa (SS)
2) Tetra (WW)
3) Ghirahim (SS)

Frankly, if we end up getting a Zelda newcomer, I would be happy with any of these three. They're all awesome characters!

When Toad joins the battle, Alfonzo stands in for Peach's B attack.
Alfonzo: "Leave it to... me?"

Perfect!

Yeah, I don't know how that happened. Maybe we'll see something MM5-related in Mega Man's grab/pummel/throws?

I wouldn't say so. I think context matters: in the Wii Fit games, you can select the gender of your trainer, but it's merely an aesthetic option. They both do exactly the same exercises, so for all intents and purposes, they're the same character. You can't fairly include one gender option and not the other in Smash Bros., so that's probably why we have both.

The Villager is the same way; the gender of the character is irrelevant in the Animal Crossing games since both options fulfill the same role. I'm positive we'll be able to play as a female Villager, too.

Outside of Wario, Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, and maybe Pokémon Trainer, nobody in Smash Bros. absolutely demands a secondary visual representation. I don't think there are going to be alternate costumes besides those.

Looks gorgeous, but hopefully it's not indicative of the level design, or we have another Baby's First Platformer. :-\

lol

let's hope it's a tutorial level at most.

like starphoenix said, would love to get a yoshi stage with that style in the game. can't say im digging the 3ds yoshi game's look though. and i enjoyed the colorfully cardboard look of the original YI. something's just off about it.
