Sakurai said he didn't know adult Link couldn't use a boomerang in OOT since the game was being developed simultaneously with the first SSB, and that if he knew in advance he wouldn't have given Link that move. By the time Melee came around, Smash Link was already established as being able to use a boomerang, so Sakurai didn't want to bother fans by removing it.
Obviously we have no way of ever knowing, but if Sakurai did decide to use Skyward Sword Link instead I'm pretty sure the Beetle would be his new side special.

I really like the Peach and DK ones. Would certainly wear them.
I am not the biggest fan of third party characters in Smash, unless it is a character extremely relevant to Nintendo, like Mega Man was, as well as Sonic (albeit in a completely different way). I don't hate Snake or anything. He is pretty cool and the first MGS is great. If he is in SSB4, cool, but I will not be dissapointed if Sakurai cut him.
This is my sentiment towards Snake in Smash.
Skyward Sword Link is just a simplified TP Link in a different artstyle. I think it's clear that Sakurai wants to keep Link, Zelda/Sheik, and Ganondorf in a similar style and have Toon Link be in the most used artstyle.
Some asinine people actively want a character to not be in the game because the game has to cater to only that person which is just being stupidly greedy.
See, that is a respectable stance to take on a character one may not like. You aren't actively wanting a character to be cut, but feeling indifferent towards the character whether he/she is in.

As a Ridley supporter, I know that quite well. Some people don't want him in the game for the most absurd reasons.
This game is Sakurai's personal gift to me. I expect nothing less of him than to give me a respectable, relevant roster exactly to my specifications. Him failing to do so is the definitive indicator that Nintendo is clearly out of touch with the gaming mainstream and that Sakurai has no business developing games.

I was speaking generally, including Smash Boards, GAF, Tumblr, etc. There are even people making YouTube videos against Ridley's inclusion, which is extremely dumb. Of course, Ridley's supporters easily outnumber the people against him, but sadly the haters are quite vocal. Anyway, why do you say "Smash Boards is a completely different story"? Just curious.

Smash Boards as I referring to many forums that are solely for smash franchises like GameFaqs, IGN Smash forum, Smashboard, etc.
Too many people think that their opinions are the priority and it should overwrite any opinions that have been posted on the forum. They think it's okay to act out hostile or elitism to people who just want something different only because their opinions are way better than other people which is so annoying, but again that's normal for Internet. Internet accounts are anonymous so anyone can speak whatever they want without caring about the conclusions that could affect other people's feelings.
For example, people kept saying that the leaks are fake because Ridley or Waluigi aren't on the list or Takamaru, Palutena or Pac Man is being on list.; which isn't rational at all. No one can control the roster but Sakurai himself and the companies that would give out the rights to Sakurai to be allowed to included them in.
It's okay to dislike the characters, at long they don't trying to force it on other people or kept saying that they wouldn't be in the game because they just don't like to see them in the game. For example, there is no secret that I really loathe the idea of Bayonetta and Waluigi being playable characters in the Smash, but I wouldn't dare to force people to believe that they have no chance or even tell people that they are wrong to including them in the roster.

I was actually a bit surprised at how subdued the overall reaction was. Ridley is pretty much the only character that has been more devoutly requested and yet Little Mac's reveal seemed on par with Rosalina.

I felt like there was a lot of hype for Mac. That trailer was the embodiment of hype. His 0reveal was a mixture of "about damn time" and " is this real life... "
