Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

No, he only have three hearts

OgvNoar.png
Haha. I'm afraid for his life now though.

Sorry, Waluigi. At least you got back into Mario Kart 8.

I was so thinking that at least Ashley or Waluigi would've gotten in to give Wario at least one supporting cast member to team up with. Now with both of them AT'd, who's left? Captain Syrup?

...Yeah, even I can't get my hopes up that much.

What? How can a character be factually more significant than another character? That's a bit if a subjective thing, no?

No he said in the DK series K.Rool is more important than Dedede is in the Kirby series. It is literally like comparing Wile E. Coyote to a villain that actually is shown to have some depth beyond being a "big bad" or the end of the story that drives the protagonists. Dedede is shown to do more in Dream Land than be an antagonist to Kirby.

Hmm, I see. Can't argue with that, I suppose.

No, but I'm mainly just commenting on things said that I think are exceptionally foolish.

You have a very abrasive way of going about this that got you banned once already. If you feel the need to prove someone wrong, post your own data to refute the claim and don't call out the quality of the logic directly. If it's actually something dumb, people can put two and two together themselves.

Got banned for something else actually.

It was worded oddly, confused me too. He's saying that people who argue that krool > dedede in terms of relevance are factually incorrect based upon the number of mainline and spinoff games both have appeared in

No I'm not. I'm saying its based on what they do in the games they appear in and how they interract with the characters in them.

I wish I could of back in time and participate in Brawl speculation threads

You guys are just so endlessly entertaining

(i'm being sincere here)

Well, I was certainly not expecting him to appear as a playable character. That comment was great, though!

I'm wondering what other Assist Trophies have a chance of making it into playable. Isaac, Ray and Saki seem like interesting, sorta-niche choices. It just depends if Sakurai wants niche characters right now.

Oh, and Takamaru was a sticker. I go on about how much I'd want him playable, but it really looks like a bleak situation a lot of the time.

nice attempt at backseat modding you've got going there

Also want to say my abrassiveness from Smash is primarily from the attitudes people have when Sakurai doesn't add a character that is "highly requested" or "popular". Some calling him an idiot, troll or even hoping his arm will fail completely so someone else will take over. He also explains and shares his ideas when he develops the games and characters.

Sometimes he contradicts himself like with Villager but you can also understand that the pool of very legitimate playable characters is very small at this point so he will have to revaluate some characters he passed on earlier. You can tell if there was a case where he ran out of time and did his best to get a character in the game in some form at all or had a different opinion all together.

The Brawl meltdown was terrible and while Brawl was not a good overall package beyond opinions of the roster Some of the outlashes were disturbing. Why can't people just say "fuck this game, I'll go back to a previous entry" and be done with it? People should have done that if they thought Lucario was replacing Mewtwo again (even if there is no proof of him not returning).

What on earth does this even mean?

It means casual players who play multiplayer nintendo games are going to be exposed to these characters in close to the same amount of content. There is even some overlap.

It's okay to just say your abrasiveness comes from the attitudes in this thread in general. No sarcasm; that'd be totally understandable.

I'll repeat this point:

The Miis are a mascot for the Wii and its games. Waluigi is just another character in Mario Kart to casual players.

and add that while the Mario Kart games are successful, Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort are two of the best-selling video games of all time, to the point that to some people, Wii and Wii Sports are synonymous.

I'd actually assumed Waluigi was a 'shop at first, because daily.jpg is still showing Fox kicking Samus for some reason.

I suppose everyone is destined to fail then? lol what?

Why would he knowingly say this about a Nintendo character, anyway?

I think since Sakurai put so much effort into Melee that anytime he tries to develop or think about Smash he starts going insane.
I think he's just emphasizing that, just because Little Mac graduated from AT to fully-playable character, that it won't be happening for every character.

Which kinda went without saying; Starfy's still an AT, after all.

Riffing off of Intelliheath's post about all the confirmed MechanicsCharacter buffs/nerfs I decided to annotate them with the respective pictures so check my Facebook post on it.

I'm going to call something.

I have a feeling that they are going to reuse Porky assist (From Brawl) and turn him into AT for Smash 4.
You mean Jeff?

No, he only have three hearts

OgvNoar.png
But hey, if he can somehow lose two, there'll be an integer underflow error and he'll suddenly have, like, 255.

I'll repeat this point:

Who is more likely going to be playing Smash Bros? Someone who just bought a Wii and is content with Wii Sports, or someone who bought a Wii and got some other recognizable multiplayer games with Mario on the cover?

It really has nothing to do with casuals. Wii Sports was huge, and more importantly was huge for Nintendo (whom the Smash series celebrates), regardless of whether you're "casual" or "teh hardcore". And the Miis were the face of that series. They've earned their spot as far as I'm concerned, just as much as a character like Game & Watch.

Who is more significant to Nintendo's history? A character made for Mario spin-offs or the face(s) of one of Nintendo's most successful products?

For those who didn't get to see the post I updated (by adding corresponding pictures), of Intelliheath's containing all the known char needs/buffs and mechanics changes, here it is.

Try this.. Sorry couldn't find another way to share. There are only 2 other status updates after the mechanics/Nerf buff post

I'm not arguing their relevance I'm arguing if casuals players will be significantly less likely to recognize Waluigi over Mii. Which will not be the case. I don't care if either of these characters got in. In fact I think the Mii could be damn cool to play. Beyond that, I got all of my characters I really wanted in as I stated before. Sakurai can add whoever the hell he wants as far as I'm concerned.

Wait are you seriously arguing k rool > dedede in terms of relevance in the dk franchise vs the kirby franchise?

LOLOLOLOL

So, a character literally created to be nothing more than a villain to the kongs has more importance than a character in a world who sometimes actually helps the hero save it? I'm just going to assume you're laughing because you have lost your mind.

I'm laughing at you because a character who was dropped from his own series is less relevant to a character who continues to be a boss or playable in every game in his series. Dedede has missed 1 kirby game (amazing mirror) k rool has midded 3 (jungle beat, returns, tropical freeze) and hasn't appeared in a main line console game since dk64. K rool is basically about as relevant as waluigi and I'd argue waluigi is more relevant because he's appeared in games in the past 7 years. Heck if we include the arcade/nes games k rool is in even less main line donkey kong games.

Wait a minute, you're actually agreeing with me. I was never defending K.Rool. Read the posts over again.

What? How can a character be factually more significant than another character? That's a bit if a subjective thing, no?

Maybe' factually' means number of games? Wait... no
Or maybe it's talking about the age of the character's history in gaming? Hmm, no.
Maybe it means the relevance in current installments? Nope.
Maybe it means the character is more significant to the developer of Smash Bros? Well..huh.

Sorry, I'm all outta facts.

While most of this is sarcasm (if you honestly believe I earnestly desire that someone should play every franchise I don't know what to say), some of the stuff I read really does sound ignorant and could be remedied with a basic google search or 5 minutes of a youtube let's play, particularly the K.Rool is more important in his series than Dedede in Kirby. It is factual incorrect and the only reason someone would say it is because of lack of knowledge based on laziness which I don't approve of. These two particular comments I made have no reflection of how I feel about the characters but just the comments themselves. I don't mind Mii in and I don't mind Waluigi in, I don't mind K. Rool in, would I main any of them? No, but I'm mainly just commenting on things said that I think are exceptionally foolish. The casuals will see and recognize Waluigi because he is in most of the modern Mario multiplayer games. There really is barely any difference in appeal to causal players. People would probably pick him because he looks so ugly and wacky like they would pick Mii because they want to be Reggie or some crap.

See all of this I understand and some of it (Dedede vs. K. Rool, Brawl backlash regarding "muh characters" and how the fans can be in some cases) I more than agree with. My issues only extended as far as how it felt like you were generally chastising people for hyping things that you weren't fond of. I'm sorry for being overly judgmental but it was kinda bugging me. :lol

Also, the pool of legitimate fighters really isn't as small as you think it is unless you work under the belief that they must be significant at time of release as well. Golden Sun, Sin & Punishment, Advance Wars (or the Wars series in general), and the Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents/Daigasso! Jam With The Band lineage of games are all things immediately recognizable (more than likely thanks to Smash) with potential to put someone into one of the rosters one day. There's the Nintendo Puzzle League line of games with Panel De Pon that still gets talked up and would love someone to reign in as the resident face (Dr. Mario was almost this but in execution err'd more towards being a Super Mario clone with a stethoscope instead of embracing stack up puzzles and constructs from Yoshi's Cookie, Pokemon Puzzle League, Tetris Attack and Panel De Pon). You have more recent Nintendo one offs like The Wonderful 101, Captain Rainbow and The Last Story. And then there's the army of "coulda/woulda/shouldas" that while enjoying popularity or notoriety in a specific time frame and while not bad or blank enough to do more, got lost in time. Really, with everything in the vault currently, this is a franchise that should never have issues with a roster, especially if one builds off Brawl.

In any other situation I'd agree with you, but when Sakurai is someone who brought Game and Watch, Ice Climbers, and ROB out of the closet mothballs and all, anything's fair game.

I don't understand this post. Factually it is completely wrong. It should be a requirenment to play every Nintendo franchise before discussing Smash.

I think the important thing to remember here is that the Kirby series is more prominent in Smash Bros than the DK series. Kirby is used in way more cutscenes than DK. Metaknight and Dedede played bigger parts in The Subspace Emissary. Brawl had 3 Kirby characters vs 2 DK characters. It makes sense, since Sakurai is the creator of Kirby.

Neither are exactly what I would call "flagship" titles for Nintendo.

Sakurai may have looked at K.Rool and simply thought he wouldn't fit in.

On the subject of Waluigi vs Miis: Waluigi exists to fill the roster of Mario Party and Mario Kart. Those games needed roster padding. Smash doesn't; it has a greater variety to pull from. Miis would be a creative option, but I'm afraid their moveset would be redundant after the likes of Villager, Ness and Game And Watch.

It means casual players who play multiplayer nintendo games are going to be exposed to these characters in close to the same amount of content. There is even some overlap.
Except Miis are more than just a character that appear in multiplayer games. In fact they are the face of the Wii U, which is something even Mario can't boast about. Saying Waluigi has the same level of exposure as them is beyond silly.

Also the face of the Wii and the 3DS.

Not at all.

The first thing people should think of when discussing Smash characters is that every character is there for their own individual reasons. Don't use other characters that are in as examples as to why another character should be in.

Also the face of the Wii and the 3DS.
Indeed, but Wii U basically presents you your Mii the moment you turn it on so I feel it is the system you can easily say they are the face of. Basically anyone with a Wii U will be exposed to a Mii every time they turn it on whereas one could very easily never see Waluigi in a single one of their games for the whole generation.

Or ever. I haven't played much of the later Mario Karts or Parties. I've honestly seen Waluigi more in Brawl than all other games combined.
