Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Did anyone else think it was weird that at the last second we saw an assist trophy for Issac and then there was a remix of Felix's battle theme/Doom Dragon in brawl?

I just remember it being really late and really random, like it got special attention all of a sudden. I feel like had Dark Dawn taken off even slightly, we would have had some GS representation in this game, but since it fell flat they've moved on.

Seriously, what is goin on in here?

Waluigi is such a non-character, it isn't even funny. When he is not holding some kind of sports equipment, or riding in a kart, then we can talk.

Luigi is in the title of 8 nintendo games, Waluigi is in 0

Even if Luigi only has one series that is his (compared to 0), it's not really a surprise that if there was a hard line, that it would be between them.

I really think he would make a great villain for a Luigi's Mansion game, like a Luigi version of Mario Land 2: Golden Coins. Bowser/King Boo are kind of boring in Luigi's Mansion games.

I agree that in his current state (party character) he shouldn't be more than an assist trophy. Toad has more of a reason to be in Smash Bros. Waluigi is like Toadette. Actually, worse. And that statement is coming from someone who was/still is annoyed Waluigi wasn't in Mario Kart 7, haha.

Mario Party is your argument for Waluigi's claim to fame?
No, it was a joke because he forgot to mention that.

I don't care about Waluigi lol and never thought he would be in as a playable character.

But people in the thread are being pretty aggressive explaining reasons why Waluigi never had a chance in this thread it seems.

A game with Waluigi as the main protagonist ore antagonist would be an almost guaranteed purchase from me. Hell, so would a game with Wario as the antagonist. He needs to be a Mario villain again.

Iirc, with Lyn's AT post he mentioned that some characters didn't quite make the cut (so hurtful) so I think Lil Mac and maybe one or two more other guys fit that description back then. So it would have been a possibility but again there were also some characters found in the code like Mewtwo and Roy who were probably ahead of them in priority so who knows.

So much salt.....cant we just be happy he is in at all? Im sure Ashley and Skullkid fans went through this too. Also I think we are reading into that comment way to much.

Lets stop shitting on other people characters and get along. :<

Ive been holding on to the hope that Lyn will still make it. But even I know that the chances are slim with the FE:Awakening game.

There's no way one of his alt colors won't have him be blonde, like in SNES.

That reminds me, I want more... invovled recolors for characters like hair changes and such.

I want a marth white and gold color that makes him have blond hair and look like homeboy from guilty gear.

I don't understand this post. Factually it is completely wrong. It should be a requirenment to play every Nintendo franchise before discussing Smash.

I'm a huge Kirby fan, and I used to be a moderator on a popular Kirby fansite, but King K. Rool is just as important to his series as Dedede is, perhaps more so when factoring in mainline games only.

King Dedede

Forgive me if I'm missing anything. Both villains also appeared as main characters in their respect television shows, one of which is still being released on DVD to this day. The anti K. Rool agenda on this site is just sad.

Glass Joe as an AT. Tries to upper cut you but will often miss. 1/100 chance however that he will instantly KO you.

Revised the list of times it actually really matters.

I'd have kept the minor games but gotten rid of the remakes.

Prior to DKCR, Diddy Kong had not appeared in a new mainline Donkey Kong platformer since 1999. Yet Sakurai didn't think he was too irrelevant to be playable in Brawl.

Before Brawl came out, Diddy was playable in three of Rare's main Donkey Kong games, including a protagonistic role in one (excluding the Land games), had a successful kart racing spin-off that almost got a sequel, and appeared in several Mario series spin-off games between Rare's departure and Brawl's release. Unlike K. Rool, he was always in popular games.

Yea, you are correct. Didn't see that at first.

But he was the playable character, though. lol

King K. Rool is the most important character that isn't already in Smash from the biggest Donkey Kong game since the original.

That is relevant enough.

What are these mainline games that have come after the DKC series was put on hold?

The only one between Rare's departure and Returns was Jungle Beat, and no one but DK was in that.

King K. Rool is the most important character that isn't already in Smash from the biggest Donkey Kong game since the original.

I'd argue that Dixie gives him a run for his money as far as series importance goes, but I'd be okay with either one becoming a third DK rep. I'm tired of arguing about DK characters.

I had a dream(the first and probably last time I'll have a smash bros related dream) that I was extremely embarrassed because I had just posted about how we need a Paper Mario character in Smash only to be quoted and replied to with a screenshot of Watt in SSB4 (a party member in the original PM, I believe). But I was relieved then to find that Watt was actually an assist trophy and that I hadn't actually overlooked an entire playable character.

Take that as you wish. I've still got my fingers crossed for Rawk Hawk.

As far as DK characters go, I don't see any real reason not to add Dixie, Cranky and K. Rool. I don't think there's much of an argument to be made that they're less important to their series than Rosalina is to hers. Mind you, I think Rosalina is a great addition. I'm sure some would say that 5 DK characters is too many, but they could all have very unique movesets.

Disconnect;

Nice job with change list.

Thanks! I may do more and might as well since I have all the pics saved on my tablet and want to contribute to this wonderous thread more anyway.

As far as veteran AT's: I'd really like the lakitu to return but be a rep from Mario Kart, where he flies off screen and doesn't appear until you self destruct and he saves you with his fishing line instead of losing a stock.

Dr. Wright should come back and warn you of impending disaster and shortly after tornados, earthquakes and UFOs wreak havoc on the stage.

I will add newcomer AT#s if I think of them.

Decoy edit: Chargin Chuck: he would alternate throwing baseballs and punting footballs.

Regarding Rosalina, it's also important to remember that the character we're getting is called Rosalina and Luma. The Luma has a full move set of unique attacks all to itself. Lumas are a big part of the Galaxy series -- they're everywhere.

The Super Mario Galaxy series is certainly noteworthy enough to deserve a playable character (they're the most acclaimed games on the Wii), and Rosalina & Luma perfectly encapsulate everything about those games. They have the atmosphere/setting covered with their cosmic effects, and the Launch Star, Star Bits, and Gravitational Pull represent Galaxy's gameplay mechanics. Hell, Rosalina & Luma's general play style is representative of Galaxy 2's co-op mode.

Great post.

Hyped me up again for RosaLuma. Can't wait to use that Down B Gravity well to thwart Wolf,Lucario, & possibly Olimar. I wonder what effect if any, it has on Olimar's Pikmin?

Also: Wombo Combo... that is all.

He’s existed for 14 years and still hasn’t appeared in a mainline Mario game. And calling him “the face of the Mario spinoffs” is absolutely laughable — they’re called Mario spinoffs for a reason.

Is that argument really valid though? What was the last time we got a spin off Mario character actually making it to the main titles? I don't think it ever happened before, unless you count the Mario Land series as a spin off (because Wario was in the DS remake of Mario 64). It's just not how the series works.

Either way, like mentioned above, Mii probably takes the only niche that Waluigi could fill in fairly in Smash (representative of sport and party games) and it's obviously a bigger priority than Waluigi if Sakurai dropped the whole "originated from non-violent game" approach that he had with Brawl.

The Year of Luigi was Nintendo's worst year financially, ever. What makes people think that someone even worse off than Luigi (Waluigi) would get a character spot?

lol

That might be because virtually every character that is present in the Mario spin-off titles (and with those, I particularly mean the games titled with Mario, and not involving platforming of some sort) has actually been in another Mario game before, except for Waluigi and Baby Daisy. Even fucking TOADETTE has appeared in Mario platformers (she cameo'd in the opening to Galaxy, and also was in a Paper Mario, which is significantly more than Waluigi can claim, and also is in contrast to your statement about a spin-off character not making it into the main series).

Waluigi was created for the sole purpose of giving Wario a doubles partner for Mario tennis, and a rival for Luigi that wasn't Mario.

Every other character in the spin-off titles though? They have at least been in one Mario main title or in the case of the DK characters in their series. The only exceptions of course being out-of-series cameos such as the FF characters in the basketball game, or ROB in MKDS, which aren't part of the greater Mario universe anyway.

The saddest part about Waluigi's existence is that when they made an entirely new game series for Wario that involves a metric fuckton of characters, Waluigi was not added as a character, either playable or in the background. Heck, he doesn't even cameo in any minigames.

Also, don't get me wrong, I like Waluigi in the Mario spin-offs, I often play as him (I even have a Waluigi plush doll sitting here), but the Mario spin-offs are where he belongs, not Smash :P

You're forgetting the RPG titles. Some of the Mario Party games also had original characters in some boards (like the Koopa Kids/Mini Koopa in earlier titles). Yet, none of those ever made it back to the main Mario games. In fact, we got Bowser Jr. after the Mini Koopa, and Galaxy went and created the Luma even though Paper Mario already had the similar Star Kids.

It just doesn't seem like the teams handling the main series ever look at the additions made by the side games. It seems to be a strictly one way street even when they easily could have been used by the main series rather than original concepts/characters.

Waluigi should be in the WarioWare games. The fact that he isn't is a crime against humanity.
