Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Glad to see Zelda get a buff.

Is no one else going to comment on the fact that the character she's attacking is Pikachu? Pokemon Trainer reveal this week confirmed. Hopefully the pic of the day shows Leaf instead of Red and people on Miiverse freak out without realizing that she is just an alternate skin like Hii Fit Trainer.

That's actually Toon Link. You can see an arm and a boot sticking out from the red pow effect.

I honestly would drop jigglypuff and add eevee. Best representation of pokemon as she can incorporate her many evolutions in her moveset (by randomly evolving and devolving because why not? Or just pull more evolved eevees out of hammer space for her attacks).

Okay, who the fuck is Zelda attacking in this picture? I see what looks to be a giant yellow claw, but I also see what looks to be a sword sheath beneath that. I'm really confused.

Smash is back at EVO 2014. I am seriously so excited right now. Part of that might also be because I aced this Psych test earlier, but eh. :P

Melee Top 8 @ EVO2013 is seriously one of my favorite segments of streamed gaming since I started regularly watching gaming streams. The hype was infectious and the play was intense.

It's Toon Link.

Toon Link.

Also hooray for Melee being confirmed for EVO this year! I'm so excited about that. June through July will be an excellent time for Smash :)

It's nothing special for being an hour late.
Wasn't the last time the picture was the latest it had ever been posted (hours late?), it was something minor? I don't know any remotely statistical evidence that some sort of reveal would happen if an update is hours late -- did I just forget something?

Or are people intentionally ignoring what's happened in past updates, and hyping as some sort of metahype/injoke?

The Zelda animation looks super explodey. I'm hoping I'll still be able to tell what's going on in the game through all the particle effects. :P

Good to see Din's Fire again, so is this an assist trophy then?

Sorry for the late reply, there is kind of a big difference between how Pikachu and Charizard are viewed as mascots and how Lucario is a mascot. Pokemon fans know who Lucario is. A much wider chunk of the population knows who Pikachu and Charizard are.

As for engineered fan-favorite, lots of Pokemon got their own movies. Lucario is special because he's a non-legendary who was the main featured Pokemon of his movie, one that he debuted in, no less. Lucario made its first public appearance in the spotlight, and a particularly large spotlight at that. It's a spotlight usually reserved for legendaries, previously established or not. In that sense, the same way that a show introduces new characters to garner interest in a spin-off, Lucario's fan-favorite status was engineered.

Not to say that it's a bad thing, but come on. His video game debut came out after Brawl's first trailer, even in Japan.

wat

this post is so full of holes I'd rather have another try to dissect it

"fan favorite status" is such a bullshit term applied to Lucario that it really makes you think that the "genwunner" insult is legit

Well, there we go. Not a great pic, though... and I don't mean that it's boring, I mean it's hard to tell what's even going on. Din's Fire, maybe?

EDIT: Okay, yeah, it's Din's Fire. Surprised it's been made even stronger... it was already beastly in Brawl. But as someone whose second main is Zelda, I'm not complaining!

This is a joke right
Zelda needs every buff she can get...

I think Din's fire will always have a rather limited use as long as Zelda's completely immobile while casting it and she falls into helpless state when using it in air, even if damage is buffed.

yeah pretty much

phahah

she's attacking toon link, not pikachu but also how would it somehow imply that a pokemon trainer reveal would happen this week?

I mean, we still haven't seen her Down B (whether or not its still transform into Sheik), but I'm leaning more to Assist Trophy now. (As much as I'd love to stage a Rosa Rosestar vs. Zel-Dio stand match.)

I'm going to agree with Kriken and say that it's her new down B. I think Shiek is going to have her own character slot this time around. I also think Zero Suit Samus will have her own slot if she returns.

phahah

Well Pikachu is a gen 1 Pokemon and so are the Pokemon that PT uses. Obviously that confirms his reveal. /s

This is Smash hype, nothing has to make sense.

So no Jiggs today. Guess we're getting a character Friday. I'm still adamant that it's not Yoshi, though.

Calling Lucario an engineered makes about as much sense as Pikachu, Meowth and Jigglypuff as engineered mascots since their popularity is because the anime series choose to give them a special role in the series.

i hope they make Sheik a separate character. I always used either not both.

...What the fuck? First Evo, and now this? Is Nintendo legal feeling generous this week, or are they finally realizing that alienating the core gamers are getting them nowhere?

Do you guys think we'll get as many new characters than in Brawl? I counted 16-18 new characters for that game, I didn't realize there had been so many.

I think we're going to get 10-12 newcomers this time around.

What makes you think that? I'm just curious if it is on a whim or if you have a specific reason to think so.

It seems a little low considering Brawl's # of newcomers but at the same time, Brawl added some Johnny xome-latelys (lol couldn't think of a better term) like Wario, Meta Knight, Diddy, so that puts the final count closer to your Sm4sh estimate.

Plus, if Sakurai decides that Pokemans Trainer is too much work since they are making an honest effort at balancing this time, that is 3 less characters so more time for newcomers.

So far we have

Wii Fit Trainer
Villager
Rosalina
Little Mac
Mii (let's be real here.)

3rd P: Megaman
Pac man (see above)

So we're at 7 newcomers. That only leaves between 3-5 new characters, which I find hard to swallow when we still have a retro pick, a revitalized retro pick (since sakurai said he'd try to add more retro characters, I take that as wanting to pull another pit w/ Takamaru or Lip or someone) a WTF character ((don't believe WFT is one since a WTF char shouldn't be revealed too early)) possible Palutena, less possible Ridley,as well as the possibility of Dixie or Cranky w/ the ((((popularity of the Returns franchise))))

That would bring the count up to 13, so let me eat my words real quick, lol.

I have a weird feeling that we are getting between 10-14 characters since they have to spend most of their development times to bringing veterans back. Also they have to work on about 40 veterans, stages (split between 3DS and Wii U), Items, Assist Trophies, Pokeball Pokemon, Trophies, Single Player Contents, etc.

I would not assume that. Sakurai has been pretty explicit about what is an assist trophy and what isn't.

Maybe it is an extra special move, like a super that we just don't know about or a part of the attack customization , much like people assume w/ Peach's rainbow attack?

Because remember; every game from 64 onward has added a new major attack or defense mechanic. Melee added side B's and the air dodge, Brawl added infinite air dodge and Final Smishssmash

Also, am I glad that I'm not staying up all night for these like I was with the Dojo. Although, staying up for the Dojo is probably why my sleep schedule is god-awful these days.

So a buff for Zelda, nice. Good to see Sakurai talk about how moves are changed from previous games

Very funny, I'll see you for Yoshi's reveal at 5AM

Ha ha ha, as people rarely seem to acknowledge any of my comments it is nice to be noticed! You bring the popcorn and I'll gather the salt when Yoshi had a baby on his back

looks about right. Possibly throw in Takamaru and Impa but I'd be good with the 12 listed above.

Oh yeah! I forgot about the FE rep and Mewtwo, if we can count him as a newcomer, so that puts it at 15 if you count the retro pick and the Pit-like pic as well, so we got;

WFT
Villager
Rosalina
Little Mac
Mii
Mewtwo

Mega man
Pacman

Palutena
Chrom
Dixie Kong
Ridley

WTF character
Retro pick
Pit style Retro pick

So we are at 15
