Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Yeah, that video made me feel uncomfortable. Yoshi isn't Mario's dog.

I know, right? If he felt so strong that he had to make a statement, he could have made a sad video about Poochy, who is Yoshi's dog according to Yoshi's Island. But as it is, the video he made is just awkward, and at odds with everything he's ever written with those characters.

Something tells me Sakurai gives no fucks about Evo when it comes to miiverse updates.

Only vaguely related to Smash Bros., but did anyone else find today's Brawl in the Family "comic" cringeworthy? Everyone in Matthew's forums is like "D'aaaawww you made me cry", and not at all bothered by the fact that two weeks after his dog dies Matt feels like he has to make an elaborate "tribute to pets" video where Yoshi inexplicably acts like a dog (like he's never done in any BitF strip or any Nintendo game ever).

It's one thing to let your pain bleed into your art, its another thing to use your weekly funny strip as a platform in which to do so in the most forced, nonsensical way. Despite having a loose canon, have the characters ever been inconsistently portrayed in the comic? No. But here it's OK, because it's an allegory for pet loss and blah, blah, blah. On YouTube they're acting like it's the Citizen Kane of Nintendo comics, but I think it's just painful to look at. I think he'll be embarrassed by it one day when he looks back on his work as a whole. TL;DR, Yoshi is not a dog, has never acted like a dog, this comic strip video is a cheap grab at reader's heartstrings that is sadly connected to Matt's own personal life in a very unfunny way. </entitled angry BitF fan rant>

I think you're taking needless offense to this. It was pretty cute. Yoshi's been portrayed as far worse than just a dog on the internet, I guarantee you, but even so, who cares? It's just some video some guy made. You don't need to feel insulted for whatever reason.

BTW, no character reveal today. Or Friday. Next week, that's my guess.

*nostalgia blast*....I would be ok with this!

Now about the comic thing, it only reminds me of the CAD fiasco. This seems minor in comparison honestly. Whatever helps him cope with the loss though, losing a pet is always rough. ='(

Call me weird, but I am ok with seeing these kind of things, because it reminds me that the writers are humans and have their own things to deal with in life.

"Pic of the day: with Melee being played tomorrow at Evo, check out these returning Melee veterans fighting each other: Ness, Ganondorf, Captain Falcon and Mewtwo"

more like
"Pic of the day: with Melee being played tomorrow at MLG, check out the new Final Destination!"

oh and Melee FD>Brawl FD
Brawl Battlefield>Melee Battlefield

.

I don't personally feel insulted, but I do think its insulting to the reader's intelligence to suddenly portray Yoshi as Mario's dog because his dog died and he feels he needs to let everyone know *again* (he had already posted a drawing of his dog in lieu of a comic a few weeks back) that his dog died and he's sad about it.

I know losing a pet is rough, believe me, I do. But if I had an audience as big as he does, and had spent so many years building up a sort of canon that, compared to other fan comics. is very true to the source material, I wouldn't do this. Not when there's an actual dog in the Yoshi series who is Yoshi's pet. Not to mention that a lot of people respect his comics because they seem almost good enough to be official, Nintendo licensed comics; that's why NintendoForce, the self-proclaimed spiritual successor to Nintendo Power, has him as their staff cartoonist. But a professional cartoonist doesn't let his personal life spill into comics, and when he does he does it in a more sensible and less obvious, forced way.

My point being that Matthew Taranto is by no means a professional cartoonist, but his work is of such a quality that I've come to expect more professionalism and, I dunno..."dignity" in his work. I don't think there's anything dignified about completely changing the rules of one of your comic's core characters for the sake of making a statement like this. Like the other dog tribute before it, it will stick out like a sore thumb in the "canon" of his comic strip work. This video was just disappointing to me is all, but that's just my opinion and I want to shut up about it now and not derail this thread..

Well not everyone in sad/rough times think clearly, they could have their judgement clouded by thoughts and emotions. He is basically a teen age kid right now venting in whatever way he can. I think I could of worded that better but you get what I mean

How odd.

Anyone notice the only old Pokemon in that picture are Charmander, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Pikachu and Meowth?
I'll never shut up about Meowth.

It's done in Anime style, and Pikachu and Meowth are main characters in the show, and the Kanto Starters are given out in XY, so that's why.

Lingering memories from the Brawl Dojo days, perhaps?

Sometimes I wonder if those people just don't do the in-depth statistical analysis of semi-predictable dojo update patterns most people do.

Then I realise "NEWCOMER = TRAILER" is so obvious that anyone aware of the dojo should know that by now regardless.

...What the fuck dude? How about you let the man grieve how he wants to grieve? It is also so his creative medium and as an artist he can do whatever he wants, so it doesn't really matter what anyone thinks and if he cares enough about it dead dog to do that, it is doubtful he will regret it.

Why is Sakurai late again

You should question more on why they're allowing quadrupeds in football
