Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Well looks like Snake isn't going to come back.
If Kojima isn't lying and really doesn't know but Sakurai has his permission, how does that even work? Wouldn't Kojima need to know what's going on with his character? Only thing I could think of is that the contract back with brawl perhaps covered using the character in future titles but I sure doubt it.

Chances are Kojima doesn't own the character and doesn't require permission for his use, and that's all handled by Konami and their marketing.

But he would probably know and it's probably just like Iizuka saying how it'd be neat to see Sonic again and we saw him less than a month later.

I don't really know anything about Kojima's characters and whatever rights are involved though.

What do you guys expect Kojima to do, outright confirm or deny Snake? He gave the vaguest answer possible to avoid that.

That was my question, but I mostly asked it to see how he would react. Predictable answer, but still pretty cool to see he's still up for it if Sakurai is.

lol, not good news for Snake. You'd think Kojima would know if he was in. Though it's very possible he's just lying to keep the mystery.

Cue the Belmont and Advance Wars character wishes.

I wouldn't see how denying a character would be an issue. Though then again people have done similar and the character pops up later on (talking other fighting games here)

Hmmm well I wasn't tracking Iizuka and sonic, so I guess there still might be a chance I suppose.

Kojima isn't in a position to confirm anything about Smash Bros though. He cannot say "yes" if Snake truly does return because revealing that is up to Sakurai.

The important thing is that he did not say "no".

I highly doubt Kojima wouldn't know if Snake is in Smash. Konami company is basically Kojima company in terms of games.
the more fakes that come up, the harder it seems to disprove the palutna leak.
This is quite the leap.
RIP Solid Snake
This is also quite the leap.

Kojima wouldn't reveal Snake, Nintendo would. All reveals, veterans and newcomers, are 'surprises' of various degrees. People wouldn't want to spoil the surprises/reveals.

Yeah I know it is quite the leap, but the wait is killing me.
I don't know how some of you do it.

Yea, I understand you must be feeling angst about Snake's return. Then there are those hardcore anti-Snake people because "NINTENDO RELEVANCE".

You just gotta believe! ;)

There's been 1 character announcement a month right?
Has there been one yet? I always seem to miss whenever they are announced.

Yep just have to keep on trucking for a few more months.

This is the man responsible for gaming's most memorable trolling, AKA Raiden in MGS2.

Pretty sure we can't take -this- as a definitive for anything.

If Sakurai doesn't need permission from Kojima (And presumably Konami) to use Snake, it's really a matter of if Sakurai believes Snake is worth bringing back or not. I personally would like to see him back for variety and the fact that hes was fun to use.

I just watched the clip again to make sure what Kojima said. He said he doesn't think it's likely, but he told Sakurai to "please use Snake". Sounds like he really wants it.

I don't know that this necessarily confirms Snake isn't in, since that would require a plainfaced interpretation of what Kojima is saying.

If I recall correctly, Kojipro was pretty pissed about the PS All-Stars leak that revealed Raiden because they had some co-marketing Rising stuff going on, too. They might not want the same thing to happen this time, as well.

Of course it might actually be as clear as it seems and Snake is gone.

I was unable to watch the stream so I had to go off what was said in the thread.
That puts it even more in the realm of vagueness. I really hope Snake makes it in. He works great as the outsider character and his moveset is a lot of fun to play with.

What is with Donkey Kong in Smash? Since Melee, he's looked perpetually stupefied and idiotic in stark contrast to his own series.

I don't necessarily dislike this, but I've felt that the Donkey Kong in Country and such struck me as more of a hip, rebellious teenager (like 18 or so, not exactly a teen I guess, but still young), but in recent years, especially in Returns, he's grown into a more level-headed, yet bumbling, dad-like character.

I sort of like the new version of DK though, so I ain't complaining.

Have a link to the clip? Would appreciate it lots!

In an old interview, Sakurai said the first thing they had done was to port Brawl's engine, all characters included. So at the very beginning, no character had been cut, and that he apologized in advance should any cuts take place later in development. If, on top of this, Kojima personally asked Sakurai to bring Snake back, I think there's a reasonable chance he's back.

The silence surrounding a character that was Brawl's claim to Ultra Hype is nothing short of really weird, though.

There's a replay on Twitch here, but it loads really slowly for me. The question is at around 29:10.

I hope Snake returns, if for no other reason than his moveset being one of the most fun and unique playstyles to be brought into the series, and I just don't know what other Nintendo character could naturally utilise those attacks.
Except Slippy, of course.

Just have a lot of patience and don't think about it too much.

Right-O.

I missed this, what was the Palutena leak?

I think Palutena Leak thread link is in my OP.

So far, we have two reveals per month for last 3 months.

I just watched the clip again to make sure what Kojima said. He said he doesn't think it's likely, but he told Sakurai to "please use Snake". Sounds like he really wants it.

I hope that Sakurai would use Snake for Kojima and fans' sakes.

I agreed. I love Snake in term of gameplay. It's so much fun to set up mines, etc.

I'm gonna pop a bottle of champaign as soon as we have confirmation that Snake does not come back.

Wait little longer, Please Understand.

Why would you guys even want him back? Snake is such a shitty character and doesn't fit in to the Smash universe. Heck he doesn't even really appear on Nintendo platforms besides a bad port for the 3DS.

for future reference there are 5 metal gear games on nintendo platforms

metal gear on NES (kinda a port of the MSX metal gear, but it ended up being a totally different game, exclusive), snake's revenge (NES, brand new game made as a sequel to nes metal gear, doesn't have anything to do with the real metal gear 2 and wasn't even released in japan, exclusive), metal gear solid: ghost babel (gbc, sorta an alternate take on mgs1, exclusive and very good), metal gear solid: twin snakes (gamecube, remake of mgs1 in mgs2 engine with new cutscenes and va and all that, exclusive), snake eater 3d (3ds, remake of mgs3, i think it's mostly the same but with some photo stealth camo stuff maybe?)

i'm not going to say all of these are great or significant or do/don't qualify him as part of nintendo history or whatever, but i mean there they are

Because Snake was a fun addition to the series. Definitely not a shitty character, and he looked no more out of place standing next to Kirby and Pikachu than Ganondorf did standing next to Yoshi or Game & Watch.

Also he appeared on Metal Gear 1 & 2 (US ver) for the NES, Metal Gear Ghost Babel for Gameboy, MGS1 remake Twin Snakes on GCN, as well as the mentioned MGS3 port on the 3DS (even though that's more so Big Boss and not Snake)

Hell he's had more games on Nintendo platform than some of the Nintendo characters themselves.

After Sakurai's statements of trying to keep all the veterans back for Smash 4, it's not too out of the question to expect Snake to be back. I don't see Kojima having a problem with it either, since he practically begged Sakurai to put Snake in ever since Melee.

Couldn't care less if he returned or not truthfully but he already has a move set already (an admittingly fun one) and blends in rather well with everyone else. Also sakurai doesn't want to disappoint fans with cuts. :D
