Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

So how do you guys feel about the fact that we're going to all have to use the Wii U Pro controller for Smash 4? Can it withstand the APM and vigorous actions that the faithful GameCube pad undertakes mercilessly at the hands of the Smash elite?

At least we'll never have to worry about a mass out break in deflated buttons. This new pro controller is awesome and I imagine its going to hold up extremely well over the years.

needs a wired option, but I don't think the Wii U Pro controller is that bad?
I dunno

also lol Kriken

I'm just scared the Pro controllers won't have the mileage the GC ones do. And since the button layout doesn't have an enlarged A and cool layout it'll hamper game play.

What do you mean by the last part, exactly? I sometimes have the same problem, focusing more on technical aspects and refining spacing and approaching as a !Marth main.

I'm not the poster you quoted so I can't say exactly was meant by that, but I would think of it as just slowing down and choosing more basic options. Like, maybe don't worry too much about approaching or comboing, just focus on certain aspects at a time. Maybe just try to respond to their approaches instead of approaching them, and then just focusing on getting the edge guard every time instead of going for fancy gimps.

To take that even further, I kinda liked the idea Wobbles wrote about here. Basically just try one move or strategy for matches at a time, just to get a thorough understanding of everything about it. Starting with something like that that's almost sub fundamental, and just building a strong understanding from there.

Anyway, I get that sort of experience in other fighters all the time, where I'm more focused on trying to learn my combos or do certain moves, and the other uneducated heathen just punches me when I'm busy trying to play. The way to get around that issue is just to practice a lot. Control of your character and tech stuff should be unconscious. Even if you mess up the techniques every time, keep going for them in real matches. It'll click after a while.

Thank you emb, that is pretty much what I meant to a tee.

Focus more on the spacing of yourself and just as important, your opponent's. Operate more on a footsie basis to intercept and guarantee hits/grabs that could possibly lead to comboes or a tech chase situation followed by mixup/mind games. Find a KO through edge guarding. Just small decisive movements; adaptability. As emb said, it just takes practice and the combos/setups and follow-ups will come instinctively during your play.

Welcome aboard! Weekends are the best and there's nothing but full on disappointment 4 outta 5 nights of the week.

I just realized we'll have to possibly wait till summer for Yoshi. Why did Japan have to get New Island so late?

Traded for having Kirby so early

They get the awesome Kirby game early while we get the mediocre Yoshi game? That's not fair Nintendo.

Speakin of Kirby, possible Meta-knight reveal when the game comes out over here? Haven't seen much of it so I don't know if he's in the game or not.

The button layout is missed for many games but the standard is what was created in the SNES days. Do you feel like most of your games these days suffer for not using the GC lay out? As far as buttons go its going to feel a little more like Smash 64 which was absolutely fine. The Wii classic controller felt very good with brawl as well, so long has you gave it a minute and got over the mental block of the GameCube.

I think the Pro Controller will do just fine, the right analog stick will probably either do nothing or be the c-stick from the GC controller and I don't believe the digital triggers will do any harm for shielding since it's an "all or nothing" type method

It's a solid controller. I use it for all my Wii U games.

If we get a St. Patrick's themed update, I wonder what it will be. Luigi may be the closest with all that green. Or maybe an update on alternate colors with characters like Kirby and Mario being green colored. Or maybe Sakurai trolled us and he will reveal Yoshi today.

I was wondering this myself. Haven't bought a pro controller yet but I was curious about the differences between it and the GameCube controller. I hardly ever used the c-stick at all but I' wondering if people think it will be harder/easier/the same to use it since the buttons are now lower and the stick higher? It seems like the reach from some of the buttons to the stick might be harder? Thoughts?

Edit: what's this? VoltronbadA is evolving from junior member to member!!!!!!!! VoltronbadA has learned a new move - cynical!

C-sticking I think will be fine. There's a vid on youtube of a guy playing Brawl on his computer using the Wii U pro controller and he had no issues.

I'm gonna be using my wiiU gamepad, I think it will handle things fine.

I want to feel this way about using the Gamepad, but for some unpinnable reason I just have my doubts about it being one of the better ways to play. I think it may stem from my experience with shooters on the Wii U; I feel ham-handed in those on the Gamepad. I really would like to try the Pro controller for Smash.
