Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

if skull kid isn't playable, ridley should absolutely not be a featured character. winged mechanics in brawl such as pit metaknight and charizard are dumb. there's so many better choices they can grab from for a fighting game perspective.

Skull Kid is just a random Zelda villain, while Ridley is >the< Ganon/Bowser from the Metroid series. Also, I don't really think "Fighting game perspective" matters in Smash Bros.

Uh...

Yeah.

i don't mean some technical competitive thing when i say fighting game perspective. ridley is an overly large, lanky, and would just seem unfitting in smash especially in smaller stages. as i said again, he's most flying in the games, and the winged mechanics in smash are already awkward. ridley is typically the second to last boss in the games btw, I wouldn't say he's quite the equivalent to ganon/bowser.

Uh...

Yeah.

and yeah sure it does. sakurai has been noted to be a huge fighting game fan and takes this as a fighting game as well a party game. once again, didn't mean it from a virtua fighter super serious competitive technical fighter, but from a general fighting game perspective.

You know, on the subject of Ridley, his Other M (adult) design doesn't seem to be that awkward to program:

He doesn't have the weird neck Super Metroid!Ridley has. The problem would be the wings, but then again Charizard...

(picture above was taken from smash boards btw).

Err, link me please.

He is the Bowser/Ganon in the vain that he is the flagship villain of the Metroid series, like Bowser and Ganon are from the Mario and Zelda series, respectively.

About Ridley being large and lanky, so is Bowser in most of his "canon" appearances, yet he is downsized in Smash Bros, Mario Kart, etc. Obviously Ridley would be an air-focused character, probably very slow and clunky while in ground, but I don't see how that makes him necessarily unfitting (especially when we already have Charizard in the series, who is basically a slightly smaller Other M Ridley).

Link you to what? The smash board thread?

You can say some characters in brawl and melee are unfitting, but they either have gotten adjustments or just made it in just as they are. But I get what your saying. Ridley wont be as huge as people think he will be in if he is shown as playable, He would be slightly bigger then Bowser I think. And Who is to say the Flight Mechanic hasnt been polished this time around? :D
Never got used to it since I barely use those characters

Olimar, in his actual size, is not even an inch tall (his official height is 0.75 inches or 1.9 cm). That's the cool thing about Smash Bros. - it isn't "canon", so it can do what it wants in terms of resizing people.

I never had an issue with the flying/wing mechanics in Brawl, it was actually quite fun flying with Meta Knight all around Hyrule Temple. Just because you think a certain control option is awkward doesn't mean a character should not be made playable.

He's essentially the main villain of the series, and Samus' rival.

I still don't agree with ridley being definitive equivalent to bowser/ganon when mother brain/metroids/queens/primes seem to be the much more it to me. i mean, i'm sure there's some random comic or instruction booklet that makes it seem that way but off the games i don't see it. Charizard was trash in brawl though. Why would we want another winged based character like that in the game.

i don't even know why i'm doing this against a hivemind of ridley fans lol :/ -
i just don't get it.

Im not really a Ridley fan, HECK, Ive only beaten Metroid Fusion on the GBA. Just hearing that "unfitting" part bugged me. Reminds me of the Wii Fit Trainer hate. But it just seems like you have something against winged characters. :P

Whats your stance on Palutena then? xD

Just because you think a certain control option is awkward doesn't mean a character should not be made playable. ahh, whatever, im don't i just wish they favor some other options instead of putting in ridley. there's a huge fancry for it though so they might break for it. i hope not. :/

you know i'm not referring to kirby. just the characters w/ wing mechanics. meta knight was op as well and broken. and i'm sure if a game designer thinks a control option is awkward themselves they would control it to a degree and make them rethink it.

Mother Brain isn't the Bowser/Ganon of Metroid in the same way Metroid Prime/Dark Samus, Phantoon, Omega Metroid, etc aren't. They are villains in singular games, while Ridley appears in almost every game, besides Metroid Prime 2 and some other I am forgetting. By your logic, Ganon also shouldn't be Link and Zelda's nemeses.
Yessir.

And Ridley is Samus' Ganon.

The pic is on page 369 or something. Also, note how Ridley's support thread is the biggest support thread in the board, by a huge margin.

I don't even really see a viable Metroid rep outside of Ridley. He has all the tools. Plenty of attacks and movements to steal from in the game, multiple costumes, and very important to the story of the series. Ridley is actually an intelligent, talking beast-thing much like Bowser and all his shitty friends. There really no reason why he isn't in Smash yet. Even if he was a giant character that's still something unique and fresh to Smash Bros.

i love metroid games and ridley moments in them btw. ridley in MP1 is the best thing ever. but just because of that i don't think its a good fit for smash. i think its pretty shitty. if they do put him in i hope they do a good job. that is all.

A Space Pirate would work.

It could have Ridley as a final smash or something.

To be fair, both Prime's Ridley (which is Meta Ridley) and Other M Ridley aren't -actually Ridley-.
Other M Ridley is specifically mentioned to be a clone, and Meta Ridley is the cyborg-zombie revived version of Ridley.

My favorite design still is that of Zero Mission:

These proportions would probably work best for Smash, actually.

So this is purely coincidental, but I told my brother last night that today's daily pic was either going to be stage hazard Ridley or a Mother Brain Assist Trophy. This was solely based on yesterday's daily pic stage of choice and nothing substantial other than saying that we believe that Sakurai likes to leave on a "good" note before the weekend. Then we joked that Sakurai would throw away all of the rules and that the Assist Trophy would be Mewtwo just because 1. we were already on the topic of Pokemon due to us both transferring our Pokemon over from previous games using Pokebank and 2. because meltdowns at the end of the week would be hilarious especially after Mewtwo's supposed birthday and all the other pictures this week were Pokemon related. True story.

Edit: I still believe Ridley and Mewtwo could be playable characters. :)

Anthony 'Remember Me' as the stage hazard, shooting lasers haphazardly all over the place.

It'll never happen, but the mental image amuses me.

What's with the glowing rings?

Sonic committed suicide after looking at the Sonic Boom designs. Rings everywhere.

Though speaking of Sonic I wonder what assist trophies from his games will be picked. Eggman, Knuckles, or just Shadow again?

Then we have the Megaman series with hundreds of robot masters to pick from to be AT's.

As Shadow hasn't been relevant for a while, my bets are on Tails, Knuckles, or my hope, Eggman. Unless Eggman is a boss, in which I would prefer that.

Actually speaking of which, while I don't want Subspace to return, I do hope bosses do.

I say for the month of March we stop talking about why Ridley can't get in and focus on another character like Jimmy T. Give some other fans ac chance to whine.

Air Man should be the Mega Man assist trophy of choice. Dodging all those mini-tornados would be an absolute arse.

I'll accept him stealing Isaac's assist trophy push attack if it means Isaac can be playable instead.

Smash Bros. needs the greatest final smash ever.

There's an itch I have. An itch only one man can scratch.

Admittedly I'd like Captain Syrup before him, even though she likely has less chances to become a playable than any WarioWare character.

Mother Brain assist trophy is very cool.
Now all we need are Simon, King Hippo, Eggplant Wizard, and Doctor Wily and we're set for a Captain N reunion.

One of the things that I think was flawed about PSASBR was the fact that, for the most part, games only had a single representative present, whereas part of the fun of Smash was that you got multiple nods to a given series, not just one major one.

That was slightly missing in Brawl, too, with third party franchises - I felt - only being represented by a cameo, rather than a full appearance. In other words, I want Wily too.

Loved the summons in the Golden Sun games. There we so many greeat ones but it's been to long to actually remember. I feel bad for the little shroom guy lol.

I think Ashley was Sakurai nod to the Ware cast but who knows. Imo Mona would be another one and for Syrup yea it's not too good. Never was heh.

Damn I completely forgot about summons in Golden Sun. The cross-elemental ones in GS2 were out of this world, they would make amazing final smashes.

I dunno, I felt the representation of the third party franchises - especially Snake's - was pretty solid (no pun intended).

Both Snake and Sonic had roles in SSE (Snake significantly more so than Sonic, who after all was a last minute addition), a stage that also involved stuff from the respective series (a Metal Gear and some of Sonic's friends, respectively), several choices of music, and an assist trophy each. They both also had a unique playstyle and moveset, as well as a selection of trophies. And to top it off, Shadow Moses also had the character codecs. Plus Snake also was one of the first characters to be revealed.

Granted, neither received a boss themed after them in the SSE, or regular items, but I felt like the third party characters had enough content to them to not just call them cameos.

What game is this again? Dino Fossil Hunt or something?

Fossil Fighters.

Yeah I know that. Which is a shame cause she'd be such an amazing addition to the cast.
