I wouldn't say I liked tripping but I will say that anyone who says it lost them a match is a liar.

This is just plain wrong. I don't generally lose matches do to it, but I've had so many people trip in front of my Ganondorf only to be sent flying that I could probably build a house out of their rage.

This is why I feel items should have individual adjusters for drop rate beyond just turning them on and off.
^ please

and when, before a match, you are in the "item screen" turning items on/off and you select the pokeball, you should be able to turn on/off each individual pokemon. Same for assist trophies.

(there were numerous pokemon/assist trophies that were detrimental to the gameplay, sakurai :P)

If they really want to give us customization, they can start with that.

Turning off Munchlax immediately improves Pokeballs.

Munchlax is such a dumb idea. Why would I want less items on the field when I'm playing with Pokeballs?

Speaking of items, for those of us that play with items on, are there any new items they've announced that you see yourself turning off?

While i'm a huge zelda fan, the beetle being a one hit KO item is pretty overpowered. Even dragoon might not kill you if you bounce off a wall.

This isn't a gameplay complaint, but a bizarre number of the items are from Kid Icarus Uprising.

Mario, Zelda, and Kid Icarus all have the most items based on a franchise, in that order. It makes sense since all 3 games were pretty item-heavy. KI:U multiplayer had tons of items.

Not many other franchises have that many 'items' in them (that aren't already in smash or part of the fighter), so it makes perfect sense, honestly.

Pokemon is the only one missing, but they get pokeballs, which kinda make up for it.

Punch-out has no items.
Metroid only has upgrades for samus, not items.
Animal crossing has furniture, but all of the usable items are part of villager's moveset. Pitfall is already an item.
Pac man's... items... seem to be part of his moveset.
Mega man doesn't really have many items (maybe the health pickup would work....)
Fire emblem could use a spell book! Or a warp staff/rod thing. Maybe a glass sword/axe/spear?
Pikmin could use the spice stuff that makes you powerful for a brief amount of time, but not many other items.
Sonic could maybe use the shields from sonic 3?
Donkey kong already has bananas and barrels in smash, not much else.
Earthbound could probably use a few more, but they're mainly a 'Jeff' thing.

Most franchises might have some missing items but no franchises are as item heavy as mario, Zelda, and kid icarus. While it's easy to say sakurai is showing preference to his own franchise, I think it's just that sakurai is repping items based on how many items those franchises have.

It seems like such a random item to be a one hit KO. I'll probably have that off during more competitive matches, but it is too funny to ignore entirely.

Just the return of Dragoon. Everything else looks fun so far. Especially the fire bar sword thing.
Yeah, Dragoon (along with Superspicy Curry and health items) were definite offs for me in Brawl.

Yeah, Sakurai is not even trying to hide his preference with Kid Icarus.
So far the majority of Smash run enemies are from Kid icarus uprising, probably because they're easy ports compared to every other series.

That and Fire Emblem is the only series so far with no Smash run enemy.

Pokemon has a lot of items, but it's already got the intensive Pokeball gimmick so I can understand why it doesn't have anything else.

Metroid is item-focused, but it only has the Screw Attack. Definitely wouldn't mind seeing some new stuff there.

I really want to see more items like the Steel Diver gun from new franchises that otherwise would be hard to represent. They could also add more peripherals; a Wii Mote with Nunchuck would be hilarious.

I actually like the Dragoon a lot, I just wish it wasn't so common.

It also disabled Smash Balls whenever it was active, so item matches were always focused on one of the two.

Fire emblem enemies are 99% humanoid (even the zombies), so it makes sense. No other smash run enemies are human or human-like.

I edited my previous post, but many items in franchises w/ lots of items are already part of the character's moveset.

4 and a half. How dare he (X-Bomb has Uprising design but works like in Meteos).

To compare:

5 new Legend of Zelda items
6 new Mario items

If we go to ALL items 4/5 seem to be pretty ok.

I really don't mind it, as all the items seem to fit the gameplay really well, but it's just surprising. Mario and Zelda you sort of expect, as they're big franchises (along with Pokemon) that really represent Nintendo to the masses. Kid Icarus has only had 3 games, with quite a long hiatus between them. Doesn't diminish the quality of those games, but it's just odd how much is being brought over.

Redeads are also humanoid, and relatively equivalent to Fire Emblem's zombie dudes.

I would be very surprised if there wasn't at least one Fire Emblem enemy in Smash Run. They really seem to be pulling out all the stops there - I mean, there are Rhythm Heaven and Find Mii enemies!

I'm crossing my fingers for Smash Run enemies from franchises without playable character reps, too. Things like Starfy or Wonderful 101 enemies would be fantastic.

Well, it's Zelda and Mario. Kid Icarus Uprising getting a bunch of new items is just weird because it's had one game in the last two decades.

They have the Screw Attack in Smash, so it's clear they don't make a distinction between character upgrades and items. Both Mega Man and Metroid both have a lot of options there. Mega Man also has the Item 1, 2, and 3 from Mega Man 2.

Punch-out has a few items used by foes, like Soda Popinsky's soda and Aran Ryan's boxing glove flail.

I like the idea of a spell book for Fire Emblem.

Pikmin could have Bulbmin or Rock Pikmin that spawn in the ground to be plucked and thrown, with their strength increasing the longer they're left to flower.

Sonic could have the Bounce Bracelet in addition to the shields.

The only series I can see without a Smash run rep are Wii fit and Animal crossing because well...both don't exactly have fights besides bugs and screwing up the yoga.

edit: and punch out since those are more AT or stage hazard material

Scorpions and/or Tarantulas from Animal Crossing might make for interesting Smash Run enemies. Bees are already covered by the Beehive item, so...

Also, I really hope Metroid has enemies that aren't from Other M. So far we've only seen ones that have models ported directly from that game, with Metroids being the exception. I hope we at least see a few Prime enemies - Sheegoths would be really cool, no pun intended, as would most of the Phazon-based enemies from Prime 3.

While the models are from Other M, the enemies shown so far all appeared in the 2D games (And Zoomers were in the Prime trilogy too).

Sheegoths would be neat. I'd love Quads or Rezbits.

EDIT: Oh, and non-Kihunter Space Pirates.

Has there been any Wario Land enemies shown?
I'd love it if Warioland enemies didn't damage the player but instead temporarily transformed them like how they do in those games.

Like one of the larger ones slams on you and then you're reduced in size for a few seconds.

That would be nice. It would take much extra work because that shrinking effect is already there. I wouldn't mind seeing those boomerang throwing ducks either.

This game really is Brawl 2.0

lol more like the dream will never die.

Final destination. Bees on heavy items. Oprah only.

holy crap, that's actually possible now.

Leffen's Fox play during his match against PPMD's Falco at MLG Anaheim this past weekend was, no exaggeration, the best Fox play I've ever seen, and I've been following competitive Melee for about 8 years at this point. Watch as he utterly decimates not only the best Falco in the world, but arguably the best player in the world, period. PP was forced to go Marth for the rest of the set. Watch the full set here.

It's stuff like this that makes me a believer in 20XX.

Just saw the vid you linked and watched PPMD drop his first set in the year.
That Fina Destination Match was incredible, but his Fox play on Yoshi's Island was insane. I'll be keeping my eye on him from here on out.
