You know what you must do, Masked Man

Pry off the lid on the back of the 3DS

And ask the Pikmin inside who's on the roster

Me: "O Wise Yellow Pikmin, who hath been deemed worthy of Smash?"

Yellow Pikmin: "..."

I honestly thought the Miis would simply have their weight defaulted as middle weight and the actual size of your Mii wouldn't matter.

This update is a nice little surprise.

I do! I live in Tokyo and work in the game industry, as it were.
The important part of the page just says "Get your hands on Smash Bros. for 3DS before the game launches on 9/13!"
(The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday at Makuhari Messe, a big convocation center in Chiba.)

Cool. Please post some pictures here if you can!

Surprised to see they're not also demoing the Wii U version. Maybe they're trying to tune it up so it doesn't crash all the time?

Hope you have fun CHusson and Masked Man.

Me too! :) My girlfriend and I are going tomorrow. So pumped!

Awesome! Maybe I'll see you at the show! :)

lmao I was NOT expecting that. good show.
And that's awesome. I hope you get to a good amount of time with the game, man.

Thanks, man! It seems like the show is going to be packed with kids, but it looks like they're doing some event for Yokai Watch, so I'm secretly hoping that they all spend their time over there instead and let me play plenty of Smash. ;)

Cool. Please post some pictures here if you can!

Will do! I don't see anything about photography being outlawed, so I think I should be okay.

Yeah, my guess is that they're fixing up some issues from E3 before they show it to the public again (if they decide to show it in the first place).
Thank you! This news completely made my day. :)

Wow, I didn't think the Mii Fighters would be customisable in power/speed due to their height and weight. That's pretty cool, you could have an Oberyn vs The Mountain match!

I was wary about the whole "marketing department" aspect of that dud leak. Are the daily shots really something anyone but Sakurai would be aware of in significant advance? The man moves in spontaneous, mysterious ways.

He one-ups you
He's a part of competitive pokemon, or at least has knowledge about it

And there are FAR more bans in comp. pokemon then in smash

That doesn't necessarily mean that he knows why things get banned in competitive smash.

I still don't know about the Mii fighter, being able to change it's attributes as well as it's moves makes it seem like it would be too easy just to create a character with really good everything.

Also this is more personal preference but I don't want to see mii's at tournaments if only because they look silly, but I'm sure taking too long to set up will take care of that for me.

Was talking about bans in general

I feel Miis, if such an amazing set of moves were to exist, would go under complex bans, banning certain combos of moves (another Pokemon reference, Ingrain+Baton Pass in Gen 3)

I think there will be 3 default miis. Doubt Sakurai will makes a heavy small character, or light giant character, as it isn't typically what he does.

From this a certain loadout can be chosen on specials, maybe put a time limit on deciding for players would be good

It's not fair to compare Smash to Pokemon in this way. The competitive Pokemon community bans characters/set ups all the time, the Smash community has never universally banned a character.

That time wasn't trying to compare it in that way

What I was saying is that given that Mii and Palutena, which look to have no fully defined standard moveset, let alone all the other characters in the game with customizable movesets, nay be subject to complex bans of some sort with certain combinations of moves should those combinations be found to be broken

In addition, I was saying players should have a certain time to make their loadout of moves for the match, or maybe even for the set, or even for the entire tournament, now that I think about it. Choose your loadout once per tounament, first time you choose a character (or maybe probably just for Mii and maybe Palutena)

This was just a proposed idea on the clusterfuck customizable moves and Miis will be in regards to comp. smash.

Pokemon comparison was just given as an afterthought, it's not the main point in any way

The problem with having complex bans in smash is that it is a very matchup based game.

If someone says a move is overpowered then we have to find out why it's overpowered, is it only over powered against a certain character? only overpowered on a certain stage? only overpowered against a certain character when on a certain stage?

Then you have people complaining that X's move is overpowered against Y character, with the people who play X characters saying that it's the only way X can have a favourable matchup against Y.

At this point it becomes futile and the easiest route is to just ban custom moves.

I have a feeling custom moves will be accepted (as long as you can change them via the CSS, if not, say bye to custom moves in tournaments), but the extra bit with miis about being able to change it's weight based on the mii's attributes that you'll be changing via the mii maker and not in game is too much and if you're just using standard miis then what's the point of the character anyway?

Also choosing a loadout for a tournament and sticking to it is bad, custom moves are designed to help certain characters in certain matchups, not letting a player customise their moves based on who their opponent picks would be stupid.

Smash isn't like pokemon where you can choose all the stuff you want to use beforehand based on a set of rules, it's a lot more dynamic in what players should and shouldn't use and can change a lot between games.

I'm confused, why were people expecting Falco?

Nobody was "expecting" falco, but there was a supposed leak and people wanted to see if it was true or not.

How do we know there are three? Was it in a trailer, or something with the Mii Maker?

Every other game with size differences has 3. Small, Medium, Large. I just figured they were following the Mario Kart rules of Mii Sizes.

Even if it's just 2, that's a lot of variety for one character!

Custom moves for Miis and Palutena (and maybe everyone else) being legal at tournaments will mostly depend on how long it takes to set them up. If they can be set up right on the character select screen in a quick matter, then I could see custom moves being allowed for them in the short term, then maybe let all the characters use them (after testing of course). If not, then everyone goes with default movesets (you can turn off customization offline right? I swear I saw something like that in a screenshot)

As for the whole attribute thing for Miis, yeah there's no way that's getting a pass. Although we don't really know just how that's going to work regarding when you choose the Mii, so it's really early to tell.

The easiest way is probably to not allow custom moves, and treat each Miis weight class and fighting class as separate characters. 9 additional characters is not hard to manage at all, having 3 set Miis already made, it would be no less smooth than picking any other character.

S-Brawler
S-Sword
S-Blaster

M-Brawler
M-Sword
M-Blaster

L-Brawler
L-Sword
L-Blaster

Not hard to work into tournaments at all.

You know those attributes are set when you make a Mii. We've seen how it works in a game like Mario Kart. It really isn't as big a deal as some are making it out to be.

I'd rather get rid of Mii's than not have custom moves at all, custom moves are the one thing that makes me excited for smash 4.

There's no point banning custom moves "for testing" at first because the only good way to test them is in tournaments.

Wasn't someone speculating about mii size = weight class? Congratz for guessing it right. I totally thought there was no way you'd be right. Guess I lose! Really cool for sakurai to implement that. I wonder how truly different they will be. If it'll be sonic > Bowser levels of difference or Marth > Ike levels of difference.

Was it the Falco gamefaqs leak? I think that was it.

Anyone care to re post it?

Anyone willing to give it a pass if falco is on monday? :p

I still think he'll be part of the unlockable crew. My prediction for next veteran is either Wario or Ice Climbers. Metaknight will be unlockable this time so that kirby can have an unlockable rep.

I think custom moves will be banned just for the sake of time/logistics.

From what we've seen so far though, I have no reason to believe they're unfair. Seems like a more significant version of something like gems in SFxT (did those end up banned? I actually don't remember at all)

All it takes is for the right combination of special moves to allow for some crazy combo (especially since DI seems to be nerfed) and they will be banned.
