Yep. Always baby steps with things like this with Ninty it seems.

I still see it as a win because Nintendo officially sponsered their 13 year old game whose competitive scene is as strong as ever. I'll take that much.

Maybe next time they have a character to reveal for a fighting game... In 2112.
Or if we get character DLC and it continues into this time next year, which, to keep Smash going at full speed, hopefully will be the case.

Edit: Oooh! Got so wrapped up in thinking about Smash I didn't even consider they could announce stuff for Pokkén! Like it's existence alone, in retrospect, seeing how everything's been copyright speculation and a single screen.

Am I the only one convinced that Pokken is just for the Trading Card Game?

All I know is that whatever Pokken is, it's inevitably a victim of by people hyping up the trademark with nothing to go on but that one screenshot.

At this point I wonder if it even exists.

Give Nintendo time to learn. Showing up as sponsor was a good move this year, and hopefully they'll embrace the community more next year,

Nintendo gonna Nintendo I guess.

With that said I guess more public aren't watching EVO?

I don't know about that but this is the first EVO where Melee popularity exploded back on the FGC. When your trying to promote a game as more competitive friendly, it's a missed opportunity to not have something for the biggest fg tournament out there.

I don't know why you guys were both expecting a nintendo announce AND disappointed (they're behind the times, blah blah!) that they didn't do one. It's not really a big deal that a japanese company who has a japanese developer making a game didn't show up to a tournament in the USA to reveal their character. Before you bring E3 up, E3 is a different matter altogether, and you know that, so don't even try.

I'm probably getting ahead of myself, but I'm fully expecting to hear this tomorrow. So much, in fact, that I'd be disappointed if it was anything else (Xenoblade-wise, anyway).

I reckon it's something NoA might have wanted to do, but these things are probably down to Sakurai and I can see him saying no, especially considering he'd rather just upload a video onto the website tomorrow with no fanfair at all.

I can imagine nothing more hype than having a captain falcon reveal at EVO considering how he's pretty much the darling of competitive melee (until aMSa and his Yoshi showed up, now Axe and pikachu is trying to get in on some of the love too).

Not disappointed, just wanted them to shoot higher for a game their promoting as more competitive friendly (somewhat).

We're getting a new character anyway tomorrow.

People were honestly expecting some form of Smash announcement when we have one tomorrow?

C'mon, Nintendo aren't that generous.

We knew Nintendow as at EVO, we knew there was an announcement after Melee, and we knew that 3:00 is on the longer side for a character trailer (suggesting there could be a veteran in it). Kinda made sense.

Nintendo's generosity is based on Smash reveals?

A pic of the day is already generous as fuck. I don't think any other devs do stuff like that, since game development always has to be shrouded in a veil of secrecy.

It was obvious from the very beginning that a character reveal wasn't going to happen at Evo. Even if NoA wanted to announce something, it's Sakurai who has total control over marketing, and the reveals happen when he wants them to.

Nintendo is likely of the [correct] opinion that the majority of their fanbase doesn't tune in for EVO so would rather make big announcements to a larger captive audience. It's simple maths.

The idea that Nintendo needs to appease the fighting game scene over everyone else is such an odd concept.

They could have just had the trailer stream on the site and be shown at EVO at the same time. There's no real fanfare to it just appearing on the site at 3pm, it's just not as fun to be a part of the reveal.

It's like the MKX Raiden reveal, it's made more fun just because you're seeing it for the first time with a bunch of other people that are fans of the series.

I see no problem in showing a trailer in front of a bunch of dedicated fans to the series and fans of the genre in general, especially now that NoA are trying to reach out to the competitive audience a bit more. But, again, it's Sakurai so.

I mean it's not as if showing it at EVO would immediately cut the announcement off from everyone else or something.

Woo! Less than a day remaining. I played some Xenoblade in hopes I could beat it before then, but I don't think I'll be able to. I just got to the point where
Zanza reveals himself as the big bad, with Alvis and Dickson as his followers. Shulk just woke up and fought off the Telethia. Really sad stuffs, I feel bad for Melia more than anything.

Feels like I got a ways to go. If only I wasn't working today. At least I've done like 99% of the sidequests.

They don't, but I don't see what's so wrong with taking it up a notch and improving relationships with the competitive scene by unveiling something they'd like. I run off the idea that if the fgc is hyped up to a point, they'll invest more time into finding unique tech for the game, since seemingly most of Melee's is gone, which might extend into a longer life for competitive play.

That's all it is, I'm not taking their generosity for granted nor am so starved for info when in fact we're getting a new character tomorrow. I just want the game to do well and have a long life with the competitive community. It's not the end of the world, but I'd greatly appreciate it.

How is showing a trailer at EVO appeasing the fighting game scene over everyone else?

"Oh no, they're showing a trailer at a tournament! That's totally unfair for us who can see it on their website anyway!"

You only really have two dungeons left to go. The boss of the first dungeon is an evil evil evil evil evil piece of shit though. None of the remaining bosses are really "easy" but that one is by far the worst. The final boss is a major pain if you're below 80 btw. Though if you did nearly all the sidequests you're probably already there.

You're pretty much 80-90% through the game at this point. All you have left is (basic endgame location spoilers, no specific plot details)
to go through the Bionis' Interior one more time (it's bigger than it was to reach Makna Forest now, obviously), which warps you to Prison Island, which... well, I'll leave that part a surprise. Just bear in mind, when Dunban says "if you go on here, there's no turning back", he means it - you cannot save from that point onward, until you've beaten the game proper
.

It's not exactly taking it for granted. Screenshots are easy to do and can be done by anyone, including interns.

Expecting reveal prior to a big hyped reveal is kind of expecting way too much.

I don't think anyone seriously expected there to be a reveal at EVO and on the site tomorrow, we just think it's a bit of a missed opportunity not having the shulk reveal be at EVO as well as on the site.

Referring to the general musings that Nintendo somehow did wrong by not showing it to the FGC. Should just be happy we're getting new info tomorrow no matter how they deliver it.

Is that the general opinion though? Sounds more like people just see it as a missed opportunity. Nintendo's already sponsoring so it's not like anyone can actually feel like they're ignoring the competitive scene.

That's really what it is. I don't know where this 'fanbase-favoriting' is coming from.

Long ago, the world was nothing more than an endless sea cloaked in a boundless sky, reaching as far as could possibly be imagined.
Then two great titans came into existence: The Hypeonus and the Game Mechanis.
The titans were locked in a timeless battle.
Until at last… Only their lifeless corpses remained.

ALRIGHT ALRIGHT.

I'll crack down on Xenoblade this week. I'm RIPPING through Prime 1 now aching to get to Prime 2.

Kind of funny the argument my post stirres went I meant it to mean nothing like that lol.

Prog said EVO would be hype or something, which means there's a new character reveal. There's no other explanation.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm actually only on Level 72, so it sounds like I need to grind a little.

I don't know, guys...Nintendo being a sponsor for EVO is already a big step in the right direction, and seeing how they'll keep having tournaments streamed on Twitch (the next Comic-Con will have a 3DS tournament streamed there), it seems they don't want to stop that soon. Also, the sponsorship has been useful for showing an eShop commercial, which is certainly a good chance for indie developers to get bigger attention, since this is a big event for the fighting community.

Could they have announced a character here, instead of tomorrow? Of course, and I'm not saying they did right by not showing anything new at the event, but I wouldn't absolutely say that their sponsorship has been worthless or, even worse, that they should have been more generous when, after all, we have pics every week since last year, which is something I fear no one else does as much as Sakurai...let alone the new character announcement coming tomorrow.
