Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XI: Where 90% correct equals 100% wrong

I've actually been playing a fair bit of Smash 64 with friends in addition to our usual Melee/PM nights in order to hopefully get used to the single stick thing in the off chance the CPP isn't supported.

It kind of feels like Smash 4 has a decent amount in common with Smash 64 now that I think about it... returning music and graphical effects, throws having huge knockback, speed between Melee/Brawl etc.

He said some other things after he said that, like thinking Kirby's hammer was an item, which suggested he just has no idea what he's talking about.

On another unrelated note I hope SmashGAF doesn't mind me asking: what are the requirements to go from Junior to Member? I just hit 300 posts, which I thought was the criteria.

Your account have to be 3 months old.

Dang, 300 posts? I'm going to be sitting at Junior for awhile.

So let's say we get the Chorus Kids (or some other Rhythm Heaven rep). What are some of the more likely stages we'd get to represent the series? I'm not really familiar with it, so I have no idea what to expect.

I would bet it would be representative of the whole series as opposed to a single location or game. I expect a dynamic background.

Can I just point out that I am in Anth0ny's pics? I am standing in the red shoes, black smash shirt and grey poor boy hat. Same guy with the Mario hat making faces during the stream.

Anth0ny are you sure we didn't meet?

Anth0ny I was number 6 in line and right where those pictures were taken I yelled out a few times "Anthony from Neogaf, where are you?"

oh wow lol

I was pretty much in a zombie state that early in the morning, so I must not have heard you calling for me >_<

Not at the pace I post, haha.

I really wouldn't mind. I really miss Smash 64 physics.
I thought it would take a long time too, but before I knew it I was a member. Actually I take that back. While I was a junior, I didn't know how to hit member status. I didn't spend much time here. I actually thought all the people with 'Member' tags got them by being generally useful, helpful, and worth while (so the opposite of how custom tags around here usually work.) :lol.

I'd love to see Smash 64 hitstun and sound effects back. That game packed a punch.

rhythm heaven stage will be a reskin of boxing ring called "rhythm arena" and you will like it

edit: also yeah remove invincibility reward from warioware and it's literally perfect

It would pretty much be the WarioWare stage from Brawl.

I consider the Wario Ware level in Brawl to be one of the absolute best representatives a series of any level in the series.

The rewards for winning a game were a little too much, but the idea for the stage was spot on perfect for representing Wario Ware.

A Rhythm Haven stage in that same idea would be nice!

The series doesn't really have much in terms of locations, but...

Rhythm Heaven is an actual place, a golden city above the clouds with a consistent skyline.
Rhythm_Heaven.png

You never actually go there in any of the games, but it'd be a good starting point for a neutral stage or something with WarioWare style transitions.

Besides that, there's the Built to Scale factory which has appeared in every game in the series which features dynamic platforms and a bunch of rolling and projectile widgets. It's not hard to see how that could get translated into a Smash Bros. stage.

I would guess a Rhythym Heaven stage would probably have a rhythym mechanic, i.e. every once in a while asking you to press a few buttons in a row, and then rewarding or punishing you based on that.

I'd imagine something similar to the Wario Ware stage, like something that incorporates multiple minigames from Rhythm Heaven in a remix style.

Oh man, just on a surface level those look great! At least whatever we get will be unique looking.

I agree, I like the stage except that rewards were so randomly distributed. Sort of fits the manic style of Warioware, but was annoying in Smash. Tweak that and I'm on board.

Rather than asking the fighters to do things, I see the stage moving rhythmically. Like, you don't have to pay attention to the beat, just the way the stage is changing. However, if you pay attention to the beat, you can better gauge what's going to happen next.

Think of it like the Beat Block stuff in Mario games.

Now that there's an actually buff mechanic in a couple stages and with Pokeballs, if WarioWare were to return they could swap it with that.

a factory stage is definitely the safe bet for a RH stage. it's a (assumedly) recurring location in both the built to scale and fill/screwbots series of games, and a few others too.

Since a lot of games tend to exist in a groundless area there are not many places that scream this is a Smash Bros level. Also unlike Wario Ware (since it was mentioned) the series doesn't really have a medley mode to play all levels (it has Remixes that contain a selection of levels) so there isn't an equivalent of the pig lift.

If I were to base a stage on a particular RT level some ideas come to mind. I'll start with the GBA version.

This level is set in a room. Obvious problem is the walls, but I'm sure with a bit of artistic licence you could make them disappear. The gimmick I thought for this one is that much like the original level itself, the camera zooms in and out. A bit too crazy maybe.

Well it is very platformy which would make it ideal and it has a clear area to fall down (in fact a rare stage where you can lose in the middle of the game by falling) and has the benefit of being referenced in other titles like Beat the Beat and the 3DS music player.

XbwOfN0.png

Not likely to be at this angle, but rather a side view. You could have two platforms on either side and the stepping stone blocks pop up to the beat of the music thus encapsulating the theme of the series.

I like this idea much more than having stop in the middle of a match to hit A in rhythm to the music

EDIT for Below: Stahp Mashpotato Samurai! Don't do it! D=

If you want a level where you have to stop and press the A button to a set rhythm* I have the perfect setting for you:

The rhythm tester! Look, it's shaped like a Smash level already!

*I personally think this is a terrible idea.

I'd say even without the Gematsu leak, a rhythm rep is pretty likely. It's a newer franchise that grew after Brawl came out and it has that weirdness that Sakurai really seems to like. He's also good friends with the team that makes those games.

That would be really cool, actually.

...I don't really understand what this means. Haha, sorry! What do you mean buff mechanic?

Ooh, I like the look of that. Would be very cool visually.

I wonder if Sakurai is waiting until after Hyrule Warriors' release before going nuts with the Smash reveals. They probably want to sequence things so that HW gets maximum attention. That game comes out in Japan mid-August, right? Hmm.

Of course the big problem with having rhythm as the gimmick is that either all music must have the same beat or the stage must adjust to the currently playing song. The easiest solution to this problem is of course to just have one piece of music which I think many players would not be keen on.

Nuu, I value my avatar.

:C
I could always promise to give you an Isabelle avatar.

There's a simpler solution. Just give Chorus Kids their own melody that plays when they start certain moves. It acts like a metronome: beep, beep, bop, BOOP! beep, beep, bop, BOOP! And you then tap the button again in sync to that melody to power up or change your attacks. This would also be visualized by the Chorus Kids -- since there are three of them, each can "sing" at a different button tap, while the others bop to the beat. Just short little melodies is all it would take. It wouldn't even interrupt the background music, it would just layer over it like Jigglypuff singing.

Warioware level would be way better if it healed 15% of your health for completion and maybe had a 1 in 5 chance of mega-mushrooming you... nothing else.

I still really like the level though.

Yeah, i think that too. Maybe we'll have double Ganondorf reveal (HW and Smash).

It wasn't very fun when you would get Mega-Mushroomed and your opponent would become invincible, that's for sure haha

The 14th to be exact! And there's really nothing between HW and smash 3d.

If one wants to add rhythm to it, one possible suggestion is jumping off the correct square (the things those hearts are coming out of) to the correct beat will produce an item much like the item blocks in the Mario levels. I should note if it is close to the game it would be a scrolling stage.

this is a video of it in action.
Yeah, I'm digging it. Hopefully it wouldn't be a scrolling stage, but even so it looks like it be fun.

That's a character not a stage. We're discussing representing the series as a stage. I mean one could just have a flat platform with tap dancing monkeys and a giraffe in the background but without a rhythm based gimmick I don't feel it would capture the essence of the series well. I mean dynamic game elements based on any tune isn't a new concept, Beat Hazard is based around this concept so it could be possible to have a gimmick that could work no matter the tempo e.g. Karate Man stage (don't ask about the platforms) where items fly into the stage to hit players and if you work out the beat you'll be able to dodge them. Whereas platforms based on a beat may not work so well if the tempo is variable depending on the music selection.

Also I mentioned the idea of having rhythm based moves before where one would press the button to start the beat and then press it again at the right time to execute the move with the power being based on how well you matched said beat. However having a tune play every time you start a move would be annoying as hell.

This sounds so complicated. This would be impossible for me to play.
