On the topic of the practically inevitable Smash 3DS Direct: What might they cover?

Of course, there's no guessing what stuff may be completely under wraps. But they have shown bits and pieces of other things that haven't been explained yet.

Like what appears to be a new Classic Mode, with branching paths and scalable difficulty reminiscent of the Fiend's Cauldron from Kid Icarus Uprising.

There was also that tabletop trophy battle mode they showed but didn't explain in the E3 Digital Event montage.

Of course, there are also a number of stages we haven't seen in action yet, like Tomodachi Life, Paper Mario and N's Castle.

I just wonder if they have enough content still under wraps that they could do a Smash Direct as robust as the one they did in April. So just as many new items, just as many new assist trophies and Pokémon, etc.

One thing for sure is that they'd reveal a bunch of new stages. The 3DS version launch is about a month away in Japan and there's still a lot of major series that don't have stage representation in the 3DS version yet (Metroid, Yoshi, Kirby, Star Fox, etc.).

I would think that they would do a normal Smash direct or wait until the 3ds version is out so they could focus on the Wii U version which will probably have an exclusive mode. No harm in doing both though.

I'm thinking Smash Direct sometime in the next four weeks, focused on the 3DS version, and then a WiiU one in late October/early November. I'm nearly positive each version will have a Direct to promote it. This is especially important for the WiiU version, which will have to articulate its value proposition beyond the 3DS version.

I think we already have a lot of memes during Smash 4. Ridley is too big, Alfonzo, Palutena, Chrom, etc.

Those will never stop being "relevant" however sine they are Smash related, and therefore can easily be connected to any smash joke without feeling too forced.

Stuff like the over9000, the awesomewhater face, etc. Those are not related to smash in origin, and therefore once their time in relevance it's over they will just feel shoehorned in hindsight.

"What does the fox say" fox jokes is a good example of that.

I think for many people it's the other way around. There are a great handful of people who are only getting the 3DS one because it comes out first. (There are also a handful of people who only want the 3DS one for now, but I'd wager it's smaller)

I think the 3DS version can and will cannibalize the WiiU version's sales, because there'll be a good chunk of people who will get it and feel like they've had their fill and not see much point in the WiiU version... unless the WiiU version can really explain what it offers above and beyond the 3DS version that you can't get anywhere else. That's why a Direct is important for the WiiU version, too.

Me personally, I'm looking forward to the WiiU version most, because nothing beats same-screen comfy couch multiplayer with friends, now in HD. But not everyone enjoys Smash the same way as me.

That's true. Especially if they're in a house by themselves, they may buy the 3DS one on hype alone, and the hype may wear off by the time the Wii U version comes out, I can see that happening.

Commercials means it can't get delayed!

I think the Wii U version needs to prove its value more because it's also going to be selling a console for a lot of people, unlike the 3DS version.Lot more people have 3DSs than Wii Us.

Anyways, I imagine a direct would go through the menus, cover any starting modes not yet unveiled, unveil the starting stages, and end on a reveal of the starting roster, complete with a brand-new newcomer and any unrevealed starting veterans. I also imagine, if there's plans for DLC, they might mention that they're planning on doing it, but don't know what yet because they haven't started it.

Well, it was 7 years ago. A lot of the people who used to post here have moved on. Folks like ShockingAlberto, SuperAngelo64 and RagnarokX are the exceptions. Also, it wasn't "combined" Brawl threads, as this was before the 20,000 post limit for threads (and, in fact, was one of the reasons that said limit was made, because the thread was TOO BIG to be moved to the Archive).

At the time it was the largest thread on GAF before being locked. There was a bit of a feud going on with the Halo 3 thread which was the second largest. I'll always remember some user native to the Halo thread said something along the lines of "I can't believe that fucking Mario fighting game is bigger than Halo here..."

Different times. Good times.

Everyone, start looking for accidental leaks in this ad, just like when they accidentally leaked Jiggs and Lucario in a Brawl ad.
Wow, that really happened? I followed the Brawl hype cycle, and I don't remember seeing Lucario until someone leaked the Ice Climbers scene from Subspace Emissary.

I wonder if we won't see any more veterans or newcomers until this hypothetical Direct, and then they'll just go all-out, with five or more characters. I say this because the April Direct took a similar approach (ZSS, Sheik, Yoshi, Charizard, Greninja), and it did wonders for interest in the game. Prior to the April Direct, there was relatively little hype... I was genuinely more excited for Mario Kart 8, and SSB4 just seemed like a, "Oh, nice, it's coming at some point, I guess." The April Direct really drove home the sheer quantity and quality of content we can expect in this game. A comparable Direct later this month or first week of September, packed full of veteran reveals and a newcomer or two, would provide huge momentum leading into the first week of sales.

Tell us what the Wii U icon is for.

Tell us what the Wii U icon is for.

"Ahh, I'll tell you more about that at another time..."

They'll explain it in the Wii U direct, silly. It's how you connect to your Wii U game. It could be as basic as 'transfer/sync your progress' to something as neat as opening up entirely new modes that require both versions of the game.

It wasn't explicit, but I remember their headshot icons being shown accidentally during a clip showing off the Sticker Album.

I look forward to the ESRB description leaking, and debates of "It's Snake!" "No, it's Captain Falcon!" when people see the line, "Sensuous well-sculpted buttocks."

Well, "Konami" isn't mentioned in the fine print along with Capcom and Bandai.

Goodbye Simon Belmont:(

What I'm thinking. I gonna get into Castlevania soon starting with first one going through to the fourth on SNES. I didn't realize Simon was the main character in 3 of the first 4 games all on Nintendo platforms. He totally deserves to represent Konami, hoping for DLC.

Also getting Dracula Chronicles X PSP on Vita and Castlevania Lament of Innocence as a PS2 Classic. Then GBA and DS entries. I'll check out the Lords of Shadow too.

Thanks. I kept forgetting commercial is way shorter in Japan.

I don't think it was commercial. It was just informal trailer to hype up Brawl.

Yeah, it was basically a mini-direct before nintendo directs existed. Now that we have nintendo directs, there is no need for a 3-5 minute commercial thingie.

Simon Belmont is great but he doesn't have one universally-renowned "look." I think one unspoken qualifier for third-party characters is that they're instantly recognizable.

Do we have any characters that dual wield weapons as their main movepool? If not Dual Swords Ganondorf would be a unique addition.

And no dual wielding hands and feet don't count. And Robin switching between Sword and Sorcery isn't standard dualwielding fare either. So far I only see Pit who dual wields his Bow Blades.

Pit's now separates itself into two swords.

Well at least in Brawl, haven't seen enough Smash 4 footage too see if he still does that here.

On any other game, maybe, but Smash Bros, THE 4 player couch game? Even if the online multiplayer is flawless (and the Wii U's multiplayer has the chance to be way better because of the extra power), the game is still shines during local multiplayer.

Unless the game feels even worse than Brawl, and everyone decides that they don't need more Smash Bros. But if it's good, it's just going to leave everyone thirsty for some REAL Smash Bros.
