That Virtual ROB BOY is pretty great, though I have a feeling Nintendo won't be celebrating its worst idea ever.
Teleroboxer was fucking AWESOME though.

EDIT:damn, beaten

A better hardware rep is someone who actually weaponizes said hardware for fighting.

swear to God if the dog is in & uses the zapper...
Captain N is ineligible since he originated in a cartoon rather than videogame software or hardware

The Zapper's never going to be utilized in Smash Bros. This is what it looks like in Japan:

They could simply use the American design in all regions. Japanese players might not get the reference but they'll learn something like us American players sometimes have to learn about them.

The ray gun is basically the zapper with a smash original look
Yeah, they could just stylize it for the Japanese version, or like I said, just use the American version in all regions. Japanese players might not get the reference at first, but it could be explained in-game (and on Miiverse!).

You can't have a human carry around a realistic gun, but you can have a funny cartoon dog carry around a realistic gun.

Because Nintendo's a Japanese company. Smash Bros. has always been "Japan first" -- Marth, Roy, Lucas, R.O.B.'s default look, and so on. It just doesn't make any sense for Sakurai to design a character around a peripheral that doesn't exist in his country.

I'm sorry for going off topic here, but I just wanted to say that Smash Brothers finally clicked for me last night at about 11:30pm. I had been playing for about four and a half hours straight, trying to understand this game(I'm playing Brawl btw), and by god, I got it. I can't put into words what exactly it was that I 'got', but I found the fun. Needless to say, my hype for Smash 4 went from nonexistent to full on Hype Train status.

I'm all in. Smash Brothers is fucking fantastic.

Pic of the Day: Duck Hunt Dog joins the fray! He works together with the ducks for his smash attacks and recovery. And what's that? He wields the almighty Zapper! Note this is the version of the Zapper that was released in the United States.

I can picture this.

And you were playing arguably the worst one!

Awesome! Now picture the fun you're having now at a slightly faster speed, with brighter bolder colors, and in glorious HD. :-)

I'm glad that you join on hype train with us! :) Gotta to get hype for Smash 4!

I really want this to be in Smash 4. At the very least a color alluding to it. The random ass colors of ROB in Brawl (except for the NES/Famicom versions) kinda sucked. I really want them to go all out and make ROB the character representing the hardware - give him color designs based on consoles or their controllers, change the NES/Famicom logo and such accordingly on him to be the GameCube, N64 or whatever. It would even make sense to change his face or particle effects - e.g. make a Wii version that shoots blue lasers and stuff. The Super Famicom one can toss out gyros in the colors of the controller buttons, etc.

I can picture pretty much anything in the context of Smash Bros., but that doesn't mean everything is plausible. I don't mean that as a criticism -- just that it's an odd criteria for gauging feasibility.

I feel like Little Mac served as the rep that US retro fans would enjoy, we don't need another one

Why don't we need more West centric reps, you act as if dudes ain't giving them shit tons of money.

Captain N? Naw, some weird stuff that western peeps like, that would be interesting.

A purple GameCube R.O.B. :-O

I'm just saying that if Sakurai has ideas for a character featuring the Light Zapper, he wouldn't let the "Japan-only" stuff hold him back. Nintendo is a global company now, and I don't think he'd be afraid to reference something from one of its biggest markets.

I don't think it's "fear" so much as Sakurai not being intimately familiar with the NES Zapper and not feeling compelled to design a character around it. Sakurai's Japanese, his staff is Japanese, and he's been immersed in Japanese culture all his life -- the Smash Bros. series feels Japanese at heart, and I just don't see that changing anytime soon.

That rule is meant more for 3rd party candidates than 1st, Sakurai meant we shouldn't expect Goku or whatever. Captain N is owned by Nintendo & is clearly a special case character due to his show being tied directly into video games.

You may be right. I still think there's a good chance Sakurai may research Nintendo outside what's immediately familiar to him, though, and take into consideration the global nature of his game. :-)

You're not allowed to be fully hyped until you read every post from the last 10 threads.

I'm sure he already does that to a degree (Punch-Out!! is much more popular in America than Japan), but exclusively Western things like the NES Zapper and StarTropics just seem out of the picture to me.

POTD: You know what, fuck you Smash fans. You wanted fucking Ridley, here he is. He's a fucking fish. You got what I wanted, and it fucking broke me. I quit. I'm going to go make mobile games now you assholes.

That's not Ridley, it's Gyorg, confirming that Smash will have stages that combine different series. Either that or he's an AT, it's too early to tell. It's not big enough to be Ridley.

So say that Rayman is an actual playable character in Sm4sh, what would you want his stage to be? Origins, Legends, 3D games? or a mix?

I would love if it was an Origins and Legends mixed stage.
Like go from Jibberish Jungle, drop into the Sea of Serendipity, eventually goes to a beach that is Fiesta De Los Muertos, and eventually end up at Olympus Maximus.

Or have the stage thats at the end of each of the music levels randomly chosen as a platform to fight on, and 10% chance to end up at the Grannies World Tour stage playing that stages music from Legends, or 10% chance of the stage (spoiler for those who haven't beaten or played Legends)
going 8-bit and having the TV effects happen during the 8-bit stages in Living Dead Party, and have only 8-bit music play.

Also, I'm for Rayman being a playable character, even if its unlikely to happen.

I really want Rayman playable now.

Hey guys, I love Ganondorf's Twilight Princess design, but how welcoming would you be to an OoT alt? It's such a classic look, I'd love to have it as an option (and I guess if nothing else it'll be one of the costumes for him in Hyrule Warriors):

Desert of Didgeridoos has a number of stage elements that could fit well into a smash stage without being overbearing but mainly I just dig its visual mix of the desert trope and musical instruments.
