Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XI: Where 90% correct equals 100% wrong

Competitive players aren't going to buy this in droves when the tournament version is just around the corner. After the Wii U version, the 3DS version will rarely be played seriously.

The best thing about the Metroid Prime games was how they made new worlds for Metroid.

The last time a non-Prime Metroid game gave us a new world was in 1991 with Metroid 2: Return of Samus. Since then, we've been on an insufferable loop of Zebes, Galactic Federation space station, Zebes, Galactic Federation space ship. It's time 2D Metroid gave us a new world, one that can be the equal of Aether or Tallon IV or Zebes.

It may not be very useful for the competitive scene, but plenty of casuals will want this. I'm not one to really get down on the 3DS's controls - partly because I haven't played the game yet, and partly because I've heard from a lot of people who have that the controls work well - but I bet a GCN controller would still be better for Smash than the 3DS's controls. I'd definitely buy this if it was viable and relatively cheap.

Has anyone figured out the full roster yet?

I mean, if not, why am I paying you guys?

I told you last night, man: Duck Hunt Dog, Dixie as a Diddy clone, and "some big guy." Also, no Shulk, and Snake and Lucas are cut.

4chan knows all.

to buy cute things?

I expect some leak a week before launch or something like that, at least we're getting hardware leaks and not obviously fake "trust me I know sakurai" stuff

As much as I'd like to play with a GCN controller rather than the 3DS controls, I sense a practical problem: you'd have to set the 3DS down somewhere while you hold the controller, meaning it wouldn't move with you. Normally, when you play on a handheld, the console moves with you as you shift in your chair or tilt your head or whatever other little motions you make. Thus you continue to look at the screen head-on the entire time. But if you're holding the controller, you can't move the 3DS as you move to keep that head-on perspective. TV screens are large enough that this isn't a problem - your movements aren't big enough to significantly alter your perspective - but on the much smaller 3DS screen, the effects will be more dramatic.

Maybe I'm making too much out of this, but I foresee this being a real problem.
My first thought was the stand that was already mentioned. It might require a little care, but it would be simple enough.

This is from the person who made the 3DS capture device though apparently... so maybe the two can be combined to allow people to play the 3DS version on a larger screen with a GCN controller? Would be cool.

But overall, it doesn't really matter. The 3DS version only gets to shine for at most 4 months. Then we get the main course.

Guys this isn't the Metroid lore thread.
We should be talking about Smash lore.
Which is only canon in the Mario and Kirby universes by the way, both of which splits into multiple timelines according to who wins a match.

This totally is the Metroid lore thread.

I mean, just a day ago it was the Kid Icarus item crafting thread.

No I'd be kind of bothered if he is in, thats truly a scraping the bottom of the barrel. Even K rool should be in Smash before someone like Duck Hunt Dog. Never mind half the assist trophies like Dark Samus, Takamaru, Saku, Starfy, etc should all be playable before that stupid dog.
I hope this is a joke post.

DHD is without a doubt, the most deserving rep for a character that hasn't been seen since NES days. Everyone knows him, everyone that had a NES had to have had Duck Hunt. Its not even a question, he is without a doubt the most deserving NES rep.

Weather he gets in or not is another matter. Any NES rep could get in before him of course. And while I usually can see others different oppinions anyone who says any other NES Retro character is better fit than DHD is just lying. DHD is just too iconic.

Also DHD less deserving than any character you listed is just laughable. Not meaning to be rude, but come on now.

Still, it would be nice for people who stick with the 3DS version because they don't have a Wii U to have the option to use the GCN controller. I like the idea of the stand, and especially the capture device, but I'd worry that all those peripherals would cost more money than they're worth.

It's happening.

Well hot damn. We live in such a wonderful do-it-yourself era of gaming.

So good other than that wonderful glitched Spider Ball track camera, you mean. :P

You talking about the camera for that one power up in the boonies of Torvus Bog's upper area? I always cheese that by waiting until I get the screw attack and skipping to that one platform you can land and morph ball on. :lol

Now if you want to talk about real glitches, GGs to anyone who got hit with that stupid Echo Visor lock puzzle glitch in Sanctuary Fortress' Caretaker Drone room. If that game were any other game it'd have gotten launched out of the window when my first play through came to a screeching halt because the instance programming that allowed for those locks to remain "active" events to trigger the next sequence (opening the door to the dark portal and allowing further access to Sanctuary) was fucked.

Other than that Prime 2 is a game I play the same way I played it the first time, scour everything any time you get the chance.

I dunno. Plenty of casuals played Brawl with the Wiimote and Nunchuk. I doubt many will sign up for some unofficial, unportable, probably expensive peripheral to play a handheld game with the 3DS balancing on their lap or on a stand.

Actually, if this plugs in on the back, you might not be able to even use the stand.

The Light Gun is already an item though, so the most important part of Duck Hunt is represented.

Wouldn't mind the dog, but Dark Samus and Starfy are pretty important. Starfy has six games under his belt and Dark Samus represents the Prime trilogy as a whole.

I use the screw attack skip too lol.

Never heard of the Echo Visor glitch. That sucks.

I came for the Smash and stayed for the Metroid Lore, I never successfully rounded up all the Bryyo and Elysia lore so this was informative.

I don't remember this happening at all in the GC version, then I was playing the trilogy version last year and many swears were uttered, somehow I made it though.
I didn't realize it was actually a thing.

The bolded may be true, but "character that hasn't been seen since NES days" is itself not the most deserving category category around. The characters he listed - Dark Samus, Takamaru, Saki, and Starfy - are all more currently relevant and played bigger roles in their games than DHD. DHD is, as you say, iconic, but that's the thing - he's an icon. He doesn't really do much in the game itself; your gun saw more action than DHD did. The four aforementioned characters weren't just background icons, they actually did stuff in their respective games. None of them have been MIA since the NES, either.

I'm actually waiting more for the Hyrule Warriors leak since it's next week...

Really hoping we get some surprise characters. I expect atleast one more unannounced character.

Because in Japan it looks like a real-life revolver, and is called "Gun", apparently.

Imagine Pikachu carrying this around.
Well, uh... Yeah, that could be an issue. Maybe they could use the Zapper design and just hope the Japanese get the reference.

I think the bolded is the real obstacle. Enough casuals got used to playing Melee & Brawl with the GCN controller that they'd like to use it again. The fact that it will probably be expensive and impractical - which was my original concern - is what will scare people off.

So I guess the point of our disagreement is this: I think a decent amount of casuals will want to use the GCN controller - the demand won't be limited to competitive players. If this adapter fails to sell, it will be because it's impractical, not because no one wants it.

Is that GameCube controller for 3ds real!? I want it. I want it!

But one of these would be even better:

This would solve all the practical problems I've foreseen: you wouldn't need a stand, and being attached to the 3DS would allow the console to move with you like normal so you don't have to worry about maintaining that head-on perspective.

I didn't realize it was actually a thing.

I've never come across any glitches in all of my playthroughs of the PAL GC version either.

Think I might record my playthrough this time just so I actually get some use out of my capture card before smash arrives.

He is also the one who suggested Metroid Prime to be in first-person.
But one of these would be even better:

A non-diamond layout would be terrible for many 3DS games.

And how is someone supposed to use that second circle pad all the way down there?

Was ROB a big deal in japan? Was he released there at all? I'm honestly not aware.
R.O.B. came out in Japan a few months before America, and his default Smash Bros. color is based on the Japanese model. The sticker on his base even says "Family Computer Robot."

I was reading about Prime's development, and man, Kensuke Tanabe has a violent streak. o_0
I ask Tanabe if the fact that Samus is female changed his approach to how she interacted with that world, and he reponds that while they were careful about the way they animated her, it wasn’t specifically because she was female but more that they were reticent to “simply make her feel powerful by using powerful looking or barbaric animations.”

“Through the discussions with Retro,” he says, “we came up with keyword ‘elegant’. She’s beautifully elegant, but also powerful.” Tanabe demonstrates what he means by suddenly grabbing his translator by the collar, pantomiming a hand-gun to the translator’s head, and explains that one of the scenarios they ran through with co-creator Sakamoto is how Samus would react to a Space Pirate taking someone hostage.

“What we heard from him is that she would not yell ‘hold on!’ She wouldn’t show any emotions at all, she’d just bring up her gun and hit the pirate with a head shot.” Tanabe loosens his grip on the surprisingly unfazed translator and brings his fingers in one slow sweep up to his own head, and with a verbal ‘bajoooom‘ fires dead-eye, leaning back in slow motion, his hands showing us the arc and splatter of Space Pirate viscera spilling from the cap of his skull. “She’s very calm, very professional in killing. She doesn’t show any emotions on the surface, but she’s very passionate inside her.”

I can't look at these without getting sad it's ending. :(
;_;

The capture cards are definitely really expensive... so in that kind of case, it'd be better just to buy a Wii U (and you'd get a whole new system out of it. =) )

I don't know how much the GCN peripheral would cost if it actually starts being produced and sold. I'm guessing it's more than I'd like. But at least the KI:U stand is cheap.

Just wanted to ask two burning questions I've had for this:

1) What sort of single player mode does this game have? I heard they got rid of the story mode from last time? I hope its not just some random fight/ladder deal.

We don't really know the details about the "main" single player modes yet. There's a difficulty system involving betting coins like in Kid Icarus Uprising and with some kind of mode where you move on a map and can choose multiple directions, although what is in each location isn't confirmed. That might be the new Classic mode or, less likely, some kind of Adventure mode, but it's not known since it was just briefly shown in a video.

The stadium modes are back, although we've only seen homerun contest confirmed, alongside a new addition, where you beat up and then launch a bomb to destroy as many targets as possible.

The 3ds version exclusively has a mode called Smash Run, where you have limited time to gather items and power ups in a dungeon filled with monsters from the various franchises, and then when the time is over a match starts with three opponents, each one powered up based on what they got in the first phase. This is supposed to be the fastest place to unlock new attacks for each character too. Nothing is known about Wii-U exclusive modes at this point.

I had no idea that Miyamoto came up with the idea of Pokemon starters. Hell, I hardly had any idea he contributed to Pokemon at all.

Someone should just compile a list of neat Miyamoto factoids because I find them super interesting.
