I just finished MGS4 for the first time and this gave me a chuckle.

Samus "Bounty Hunter" title is pretty.. strange

She just works for the federation, she is more of a "freelancer" GF Soldier than a bounty hunter :p

The main symbol/emote of Twitch.tv. It represents sarcasm, irony, puns, jokes, and trolls alike. If you see this term used outside of Twitch.tv, then this is not the correct definition. Usually used at the end of an ironic or sarcastic sentence. Sentences that contain a Kappa should not be taken seriously. If you search "Kappa Twitch.tv" in Google you can see what the emote looks like, and why it is used as it is. (Sentences that use Kappa do not always have to make sense.)

But for us, of course, it's Kapp'n

Samus is called The Hunter by the Space Pirates.

Now that I think about it, maybe in future games they can stop using Samus's name and start using "The Hunter". It sounds more mysterious!

I think it's just Japan not really knowing what certain words/titles mean. IIRC, Retro tried suggesting a game where Samus actually hunted down bounties and the like, but Nintendo told them no, saying that it wasn't the kind of thing a heroic character like Samus would do.

That would be an awesome concept for a metroid game actually :p

I can't look at these without getting sad it's ending. :(

It's ending? What the!? What happened? I've read through all of his comics and there is definitely room to keep going, without getting stale. It's really depressing seeing great creative talent fizzle out in around 5-6 years, compared to like 15-20 years.

This is definitely short lived considering its quality.

Brawl in the Family has been a terrific experience for me; I feel like I’ve gotten very lucky over the past few years in getting to do something I’ve loved, and hearing from all sorts of friendly and encouraging fans from around the globe. That said, there are a number of reasons why I’ve been thinking about ending it for awhile.

The main one is that I feel like it’s a good time for BitF to wrap up. I don’t think the comic has “jumped the shark” and I’m quite happy with the archive right now, but each year it gets harder and harder to come up with new comic ideas. What used to take me 10 minutes or so of brainstorming can now often take much longer due to so many ideas being deemed (by myself) as too similar to other strips, or not quite funny enough to warrant a comic. So the brainstorming part of comic creation has become a massive hurdle.

Conversely, I could just be less picky about what I make comics out of, but I’d hate for the strip to get watered-down and phoned in over time. I’d much rather have 500-something strips that I’m very happy with than 1,000+ that I have mixed feelings on. I think most readers would probably agree.

I also feel like BitF as a concept has more or less been pushed about as far as it’ll go. Ultimately, these aren’t really my characters and while I love doing story-driven arcs, I feel like I can’t alter the characters or their history all that much at this point since they’re so well-established in Nintendo’s games. I love them, but I do feel restricted with them.

Which brings me to the last point: it’s time to try something new! I really like working on game design and musical composition, and I’d love to see where that goes. Doing BitF twice a week is much more labor-intensive than one might think, and it’s begun to interfere with some other jobs I’d like to focus on.

*NOTE MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS GAME ARE FOR AN UNFINISHED PRODUCT. ANYTHING IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE, AND HOPEFULLY TWEAKS WILL BE MADE IN TIME FOR THE GAME’S LAUNCH IN SEPTEMBER. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THERE WAS SOME MESSED UP STUFF GOING ON IN THAT ROOM AND THAT IS NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE FINAL GAME *

I was going to play first on the main stage! Holy SHIT. Luckily, I don’t really get nervous playing on stream. I was actually really excited. Instead of just playing some match somewhere off to the side, I was playing in front of a huge crowd, and my match was going to be recorded. Godlike. The stage Nintendo brought to the show was incredible. It had a really vibrant SMB stage 1-1 thing going, and the announcers had an NES cartridge desk. I was playing with Scar, Toph and Bill Trinen just meters away from me! GAF was going to see me play! The atmosphere was incredible, and I loved every moment of it.

Before we got on stage, the three players I'd be facing and I all agreed to choose Battlefield when we played. Unfortunately, just as we got on the stage, a Nintendo rep came to us and told us we had to use the Spirit Tracks stage. I suppose they wanted everyone to see all the different stages that the game had to offer, instead of just boring ass Battlefield. I mean, it would just be the same stage over and over. Makes sense. I guess every match on stream would show off a different stage. Right?

I realized my screen was the one on all of the monitors on the stage. That was pretty cool. I’m happy you guys noticed my cursor on the character select screen rubbing Sheik. Next time, Sheik-kun.

Here's my subliminal GAF shoutout that I'm pretty sure no-one saw:

Greninja, PikAchu, Fox

I tried >_<

Oh yaaaaas my short hop dair to up tilt into bair we in thereeeeeeeeee

Then the game started. Here's the video if you want to follow along. First thing I noticed was it was a 2 minute match. Unfortunate! The practice rounds were 4 minutes. Also, bye bye tech skill. See all of those forward airs? Those were definitely supposed to be turn around back airs. I don’t know if I was inputting it wrong or what, but I was getting lots of fairs by mistake. Ugh. I started jumping around the stage throwing out bairs to make sure my fingers were capable of inputting Kirby back airs.

I got super lucky with that Skyward Sword beetle. What a broken item.

Then the Smash Ball appeared. The damn Smash Ball that I had such an easy time breaking in practice… it felt like it was running away from me for dear life during this match. And just casually landing in front of my opponents and not moving. Greninja got it, but luckily I was able to dodge. It was at this point that I notice the lag in the playback video. That was no video lag, my friends. 1 minute and 10 seconds into the match, the game started chugging like a Spirit Tracks choo choo train, and it wouldn’t quit for the rest of the match.

I had flashbacks to E3 2010. I was Miyamoto trying to play Skyward Sword. The game was failing on me at the biggest stage of them all! In front of the thousands in attendance and the millions watching at home! IT WAS AWFUL. There was nothing I could do about it, no matter how hard I tried. Lucky there was no player cam going, because I was physically cringing at some points during the match.

That dair in the train track. Lol. Bodied.

Notice Zelda touching the track at the right side of the screen soon after? BODIED. That train is moving so fast, even a F-Zero race car would be jealous.

Then I got the kill with the baseball bat. I don’t think I’ve ever connected with the actual smash attack of the home run bat in years, but I’ve become a master of throwing it at my opponents. That shit kills so early.

At this point, I actually thought I was in the lead. With less than 30 seconds left on the clock, I retreated to the left side of the screen.

Then the smash ball appears, and I’m on that thing’s ASS. It’s still running away from me, I miss with my aerials, and on top of that, the lag kicks in! Wonderful. Missed inputs like crazy. Up airs instead of bairs. Whatever. No johns. The ball gets smashed but it is not used, the game ends.

I thought I won, but I didn’t. Looking back through the video, lets take a look at the kills:

Kirby kills Greninja with Beetle. Kirby +1, Greninja -1 (Kirby 1, Greninja -1, Toon Link 0, Zelda 0)
Greninja kills Zelda with Final Smash. Greninja +1, Zelda -1 (Kirby 1, Greninja 0, Toon Link 0, Zelda -1)
Toon Link kills Kirby with down air. Toon Link +1, Kirby -1 (Kirby 0, Greninja 0, Toon Link 1, Zelda -1)
Zelda kills herself. Zelda -1 (Kirby 0, Greninja 0, Toon Link 1, Zelda -2)
Kirby kills Toon Link with home run bat. Kirby +1, Toon Link -1 (Kirby 1, Greninja 0, Toon Link 0, Zelda -2)

Did I miss something? I don’t usually play timed matches, so I’m not sure how exactly the points system works, but I was counting stocks during the match, and I was so sure I won =(

Even if that Zelda suicide counted as a Greninja kill, wouldn't we be tied and go to sudden death?

If someone can point out where I miscalculated I’d appreciate that.

Whatever.

I wasn’t really that mad. I didn’t feel like I was robbed of victory or anything. It was a free for all match, with items on, and some pretty terrible lag. ANYTHING can happen in a match like that. Anyone can win. Oh well.

I went to spectate some other matches. First, I watched the main stage matches from the crowd. The game looked, to be blunt, awful. Unless the monitors themselves were lagging (pretty sure they weren’t because they looked flawless when Smash U was displayed), the game was lagging appallingly bad. This was Miyamoto at E3 2010 embarrassing. This was Brawl wifi bad. I couldn’t help but squirm looking at the players trying to play through it all. I’m talking 1 second freezes. I’m surprised the 3DS’ didn’t explode at some point. They also had to keep playing on Spirit Tracks? That’s crazy to me. I feel like that stage could have been the cause of the lag, too. After two matches, I couldn’t take watching the stage anymore. From what I could tell, the other setups at the back of the room (not the main stage) weren’t lagging that bad. It was about as bad as when I was playing my FFA match earlier in the day. Lag here and there, but nothing game breaking.

I heard Westballz name called and decided to go watch that game. It drew quite the crowd.

Westballz chose Bowser. I actually hadn’t seen him used in the tournament up to that point. Then, the match started, and something truly special happened. Only a few people were lucky enough to witness HISTORY.

I think Wes thought he was playing Melee Falco, because I’ve never seen so many down bs in my life. Wes proceeded to play the entire 2 minute match using NOTHING but Bowsers down b. AND IT WORKED. He was racking up kills like a mad man. Breaking shields all over the place. The other three players didn’t know what to do. The crowd started a “stack it up” chant. People were yelling “THAT AIN’T FALCO”. It was unreal. That down B is SO STRONG. I don’t think players had quite gotten adjusted to the intricacies of the 3DS controls, and the concept of shield grabbing and maneuverability in general. When a huge mother fucker like Bowser just bombs you like that, in a free for all with items on, it’s a little hard to react so quickly.

Wes got TEN KILLS in that game, and won easily. At that point, I started to wonder if Kirby was the right choice in a free for all. He was a light, pink puffball, after all. And Wes just DOMINATED a match with Bowser, easily. I was in losers anyways, so I said fuck it, and decided to pick a top tier and try Bowser.

Since the 3DS setups were being used by the tournament, I decided to go play some Smash U. They actually brought the Gamecube controllers! It felt AMAZING to play Smash with that controller after having to use the 3DS and its puny circle pad.

I looked to my left… and there was Hugs! Samus main in Melee and infamous user of Megaman at the E3 Smash 4 Invitational. He was actually using Samus in our free for all match. I used Bowser… and I won. I down b’d like a mad man, and got plenty of kills. It almost felt like the move didn’t get stale, because I was consistently killing at 75%ish. After the game, I stepped back and started to talk to Hugs. I told him about Westballz match and his success with Bowser and his down b. “So that’s why you were spamming that move?” he asked, laughing. He asked if Wes actually made it out of first round with that strategy, and I told him that he seriously destroyed in his match. I asked him how his first match went.

He lost in the first round.

Well that made me feel better! Then he told me Larry (DEHF) lost in the first round too. WOW. Larry’s Bowser lost to Lucky’s Bowser. At that point my jaw dropped. Are you telling me
all the good players lost in the first round, myself included
all the top Melee players are using Bowser? Are you kidding me?

I knew for sure I was going to use Bowser in my loser’s match. TOP TIER SON.

It was at this point that I was called back to the stage. For some reason, Bill Trinen was playing SMB: Lost Levels on the stream setup. Weird.

Then, I noticed 4 dudes with Nintendo shirts SCRAMBLING on the ground behind the stage. Obviously, the lag had gotten to a point where they needed to get in there and try to fix it. I must have watched these guys reset the debug 3DS', load up the Smash 3DS demo and play a round on Spirit Tracks 10 times. 45 minutes went by, and I hadn’t played my match. After all that time, they Nintendo reps were unsuccessful in fixing the problem. The game wouldn’t stop lagging on stage, so they got some HDMI cables and started to hook up the stream to the group 3 setups right beside the main stage.

I’m not sure if my game was streamed (I think Bill was playing Smash U with Toph and Scar at the time?), but I went Bowser. We still had to play the Spirit Tracks stage. I was determined to use the Westballz strategy: down b on fools all day.

AND IT WORKED.

People were getting hit by that shit non stop and dying at 70%. Again, I feel like the unfamiliar controls of the 3DS were throwing people off, because the move is obviously punishable. Ridiculously punishable. I know I had problems with rolling/sidestepping/shielding/air dodging, and it seems like others did too, because I was hitting that bowser bomb like a beast. I got 4 kills that game!

… but SD’d twice =( =( =( That train moves EXTREMELY fast. Faster than F-Zero racers on Big Blue it seems, because as soon as I touched that train track, I was GONE. I got 4 kills, which was the most in the game, but lost due to those suicides.

My tournament life was over, but not my impressions! Stay tuned for my overall thoughts on the tournament, the 1v1 matches, Bowser, and impressions of specific characters and game mechanics.

By the way, I totally would have went Sheik if I reached the 1v1 rounds ;)

Dude's one of the first people to create a 3DS capture card. If he wanted to, he could develop a retail release version.
Oh, I'm aware of loopy's work(Available here for those interested currently sold out till the 25th). I just didn't see anyone post the back-shot of adapter, so I figured I'd share. I'm sure loopy can make version of it more suited for the regular usage if they'd planned on selling it.

*PART 3 COMING SOON*
All the time you put into typing up these impressions certainly shows, I'm looking forward to the next part.

By the way, is anyone else planning on getting the Japanese release of Smash for 3DS? I just got my Japanese system in the mail recently, and I was wondering how many others on SmashGAF were picking up the game in September.

Also, is there going to be another 3DS Community doc for the Japanese Release, or should I add my 2nd 3DS's Friend Code to list as well?

Great Work Anth0ny! Lets get you a job and Nintendo Tree House! :P

Gonna say something...not sure what to make of it.

Today I went to Gamestop, I went to ask and see if they knew what the Hyrule Warriors Exclusive store content was. No go, they dint know yet, but knew they were gonna get confirmation soon. Then I asked if Smash 4 3DS was gonna have some bundle or pre-order. He said yes, "a character"....character? He then fumbled with his words then took back the character remark. normally I would shrug this off but this guy usually knows about the game coming and has been working at GS for years, he seem worried that he told me that. He never would make a mistake like that I think. Again take this as a grain of salt, since I doubt Sakurai would pull of a exclusive character thing....maybe the GS guy meant exclusive amiibo?
