Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XV: Kübler-Ross Edition

In Americo, there's a Direct every Friday.

There. Now you're all jealous of me.
♪ ♫ Americo... Americo... Americo, fuck yeah! ♪ ♫
Actually? Recent Japanese media (for example, the Japanese MK8 Direct) referred to the 7 as Bowser's "Kobun". In Yakuza parlance, that designates a non-blood "father-child" bond, which still doesn't really go against the original SMB3 "story" of how Bowser referred to them as "his children", while Miyamoto goes on to clarify that Junior is his only biological one.

And considering Nintendo has never gone through the trouble of updating the SMB3 story among any of its various re-releases (including VC ports), I think the "Kobun" angle is as good of an answer we'll ever get regarding that much. It keeps things simple.
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Brothers but not by blood, like all the Smash brothers.

Isn't waifu stuff bannable now? Or is that just in Persona 5 threads?
I sincerely hope it is.
This is super unlikely, but I'd love if they changed Alph's ship to the SS Drake when he does his final Smash.
Unlikely, since the SS Drake has a very different shape than the Hocotate Ship. And, it's in the background of The Garden of Hope stage in the Wii U version.
Alfonzo: "Leave it to me!"
again, a much needed reminder that this happened

This is the greatest thing ever. I just wish Captain Falcon used a Falcon Punch outside of Smash Bros.

  • Mario: I've played nearly every single Mario game ever and love a good majority of them. I'd say my all time favorites are Super Mario Bros. 3 (hence I looooove having the Koopalings in Smash), Paper Mario 2 or either one of the Galaxy games. Thousand Year Door in particular is my favorite RPG (admittedly I'm not big on this genre) and it's a tragedy what happened to that sub-series while Mario & Luigi (something I'm not nearly as big on despite liking) got to keep doing its thing.
  • Zelda: Like Mario I've played just about all of them, though I'm not quite as passionately into it as I am for other Nintendo series. Favorites are Link's Awakening and Wind Waker.
  • Donkey Kong: Probably my favorite Nintendo platforming series (even if the Mario games are objectively better), despite all the different takes on the character I feel like I appreciate ALL of the arcade/Rare/bongo/Retro stuff. Despite the range of opinions on the series I feel I can take the piss out of some of the dumber 90's-isms the older gmaes have while still loving those characters (besides Candy and Kiddy). Has my absolute favorite gaming OST's as well. Favorites are DKC2, Returns and Tropical Freeze, DKJB/DK'94 not that far behind.
  • Yoshi: Yoshi's Island is one of the best games ever made and the first I ever beat as a child, but the rest ranges from fairly good (Story) to shovelware (YIDS, NEW Yoshi's Island). Not super into character himself but his original game was fantastic nonetheless.
  • Wario: The Wario Land series is (mostly) great, with Land 4 and Shake It! in particular being really well crafted platformers with their own bizarre style that carried onto WarioWare, which was also a genius idea with a cast of characters Nintendo needs to use way better. World is a bit meh and the DS platformer was apparently shit. Favorites: Wario Land 4 and WarioWare Inc.Twisted.
  • Metroid: Super Metroid and Prime are both some of the best games ever made, and I consider the latter one of the most successful transitions from 2D to 3D a franchise has made since Mario 64. Echoes is great but perhaps a bit too difficult for its own good at times, while Corruption by contrast feels a bit too easy and stremalined. The original games are fun for what they are, but don't scale up nearly as well to Super. Zero Mission and Fusion are cool additions but still streamline things a bit too much for my liking. Other M is the antithesis of Prime and probably one of the worst attempts at reinventing a series I've ever seen. Favorites: Super Metroid and Metroid Prime.
  • Kirby: A series I've always liked a lot, but not enough to consider myself a diehard fan of, perhaps since they're always really easy despite being pleasant experiences. Favorites are Kirby Super Star and Canvas Curse.
  • Pokemon: I was religiously into Pokemon during Red/Blue/Yellow and still a big fan during the 2nd gen, but unlike most other Nintendo series I stopped giving a shit by the 3rd generation. Even now after playing Y I'm fairly apathetic over the series, and the only aspect of Smash I give a shit about in relation to Pokemon is if they're fun to play as or not since they otherwise mean (mostly) nothing to me.
  • Star Fox: Star Fox 64 is tits and I have no clue how they managed to fumble the momentum this series was building after the N64 so badly. Really hope the Wii U sequel puts it back on track.
  • F-Zero: A great racing series Nintendo seems to routinely shit on for no good reason. Like Wario Ware has a huge cast of side characters who should be expanded on instead of simply focusing on Falcon Punch memes. Favorite is F-Zero GX.
  • MOTHER: Melee got me to play Earthbound and oh man was it an experience. Really trippy, but the way everything comes together to form this emotional response despite the superficially 'kiddy' writing and atmosphere is something else. Mother 3 is similarly great (one of the few games I've ever bothered to import before the translation ROM existed), though I feel some of the magic of Mother 2/Earthbound got swapped out for a more coherent yet depressing narrative. Really curious to see how it was originally supposed to end, since the ending doesn't quite reach the same heights Giygas takes you to in Earthbound. I've played Mother/Earthbound Zero, but honestly found it a pain in the ass and felt Earthbound made it completely obsolete, though I guess due to being more primitive and open to the imagination it has a creepier vibe than the first two games. Favorite is Earthbound.
  • Ice Climber: I played this on an NES I bought off ebay after Melee and was even more confused why they were in the game. The characters are charming but their actual game is archaic as fuck.
  • Fire Emblem: Only managed to play Awakening thus far, though I really got into it so I was really excited to see Robin and Lucina get in over Chrom who looked like he'd have wound up an Ike clone in-game.
  • Game & Watch: Game & Watch gallery series meant I knew what this guy was about as a kid in Melee. Pretty basic stuff, but unlike Ice Climber I can still get a ton of fun out of his games nowadays. Pretty sure my dad has an old Game & Watch stored away from the 80's too, though I can't remember which game.
  • Kid Icarus: Kid Icarus is a pretty plain NES game with a really neat setting and characters, so I can see why it endured with people despite not being remotely close to Mario/Zelda/Metroid in quality. Game Boy game sucks. Uprising is one of the secret best games so far this decade and while the over-saturation of it in SSB4 is a bit obvious, I'd prefer it be that then a game I didn't love. Really hoping Hades gets to pop his face in at some point during Smash. Favorite is Kid Icarus Uprising.
  • Pikmin: Probably differs the most from Nintendo's other IP's in Smash, I both love and hate playing these games since I start to get mildly obsessive over restarting days to get a 'perfect' run of collecting ship parts/treasure/fruit. Favorite is Pikmin 3.
  • R.O.B.: Never touched his game(s?) but I felt he was justified in Brawl despite the backlash.
  • Animal Crossing: I only played New Leaf and intentionally acted like a dumbass, but it was a great timewaster during my long commute to uni and work for the past couple years. Honestly surprised it took this long to get an AC newcomer, though I guess Sakurai gave his reasons last time.
  • Sonic: The original Genesis games and depending on how you approach it Sonic CD are some of the best platformers ever made if you're not trying to be a revisionist. Colors and Generations while not as good are also quite pleasant if you can get them for cheap! Probably had the worst introduction to 3D out of this list though (DK64 is at least polished), which snowballed into a long line of terrible games which peaked in the truly abysmal Sonic '06. Unleashed while not perfect either set the series back on a good path and hopefully we'll have more music from unleashed onwards if not the classic songs in Smash instead of constant butt-rock and direct music rips. Favorite is a toss-up between S3&K or Sonic CD.
  • Metal Gear: I've found MGS fun but I've never finished it and everything I know about this series stems from memes, Rising and Brawl. I should probably change this since I'm in perfect position to play all of (the good ones) on my Vita, eh.
  • Wii Fit: Fuck you I liked playing Wii Fit plus. I don't think I lost any weight through it though.
  • Punch Out!!: The original Punch-Out is a ton of fun with instantly iconic characters, including Mac and Doc themselves. Didn't get into the SNES one as much but the Wii game was a fantastic revival and I hope if Next-Level doesn't do the next one Nintendo doesn't hold off as long to do a sequel. It's a great, puzzle-like spin on fighting games (before they were even a thing) and I can't think of too many other games that can replicate what people like about PO!!
  • Xenoblade: Haven't finished yet but I'm liking it so far! No spoilers please, I already had someone spoil me on the fact this game has characters who are really feeling it.
  • Mega Man: Played the original six to varying degrees, but sort of like Mario and Sonic I think most people know these games just through cultural osmosis. X is also neat but I need to play the sequels, Legends has really cool characters but it's been forever since I played it and I really only got into Battle Network. Sadly I missed out on playing 9 and 10, which weirdly doesn't seem to be referenced yet in SSB4. Favorites are a toss up between 2 and 3.
  • Pac-Man: Who the hell hasn't played a Pac-Man game? Championship DX+ is the best one though.
Copied the formatting off the other posts, so hopefully I didn't leave anything off!

  • Mario: Have nearly all games/spinoffs for the series, barring obscure titles like the two sewing sims and expensive/hard to find ones like All Night Nippon.
  • Zelda: Played a variety of them, own all except MM64, WWGC, TPGC/Wii, SS and ALBW.
  • Donkey Kong: Owned and played the vast majority, barring the competition cartridge and ports of DK/DKJR to non-Nintendo consoles.
  • Yoshi:Owned and played nearly all, barring the hyper expensive Yoshi Cookie variant released with Japanese ovens that had an RPG mode.
  • Wario: Owned all of them, played all except Virtual Boy Wario Land
  • Metroid: Not super into it, but have played most of the series, barring Hunters, Pinball, Corruption and Other M.
  • Kirby: Owned and played every commercially avaviable game, other than the ones distributed through Satellaview.
  • Pokemon: Played all of the mainline games at one point, currently working on getting all 718 Pokémon into the cloud storage service. Tried all spinoffs except for the ones not released here and the Ranger sequels.
  • Star Fox:Played through and owned all of them.
  • F-Zero:Played through and owned all except Climax.
  • MOTHER: Sort of like, sort of don't. Only own Mother1+2 for GBA, due to expensiveness of Earthbound.
  • Ice Climber: Played and owned. Going to miss the duo.
  • Fire Emblem: Played through only a few games.
  • Game & Watch: Played through all the Galleries, have a few original units.
  • Kid Icarus: Played all 3, missing Myths and Monsters to own.
  • Pikmin: Played and owned all of them.
  • R.O.B.: Don't own, can't play.
  • Animal Crossing: Only played/owned GameCube. The others didn't interest me.
  • Sonic: Medium-level fan. Own most titles in some form, but not all of the multiplatform releases (i.e, Sonic Heroes PS2, XboxOG)
  • Metal Gear: Dipped my feet into the series at some points, but am not at Otacon levels of knowledge about the series.
  • Wii Fit: Know it, but haven't played for more than a demo session.
  • Punch Out!!: Played and owned all 3 commercially released games.
  • Xenoblade: Owned, but never played. Saving for a time when I need to renew my faith in Vediyo Gems.
  • Mega Man: Medium-high level fan. Own nearly all of Classic, Most of X, Most of Legends, Some of EXE, little of Zero, Half of ZX and none of StarForce.
  • Pac-Man: Decent enough fan. Own bits and bobs of the series, no hurry to complete the collection.
  • Duck Hunt Own the first game, don't have the original toy gun/pre-game version.

As you can tell, I like Video Games.

Did we ever get confirmation on the stage layout for Gaur Plain? It's not a scrolling stage, correct?

It looked like a climbing stage in the Shulk trailer, didn't it? Have we seen/heard anything about it since?

A climbing stage with a stage boss. Never have so many people been so quick to hit that off button.

Nope, it's just an upper and lower platform on each side, with a large hole in the middle.

Likely #banned

That settles that, then. Maybe it'll be okay after all.

every 3DS stage is #BANNED

It really sucks that For Fun doesn't even allow Mii Fighters or customized moves. How is that fun, Sakurai?! Also the fact that you can get banned for attacking a certain player "too much" is ridiculous.

I leave SmashGAF for a week without Internet and so much info comes out. Picked the worst week ever to move.

I'm more eager for the game guide to leak, since it'll have how to unlock everything in it. Uh, I'm guessing they do those in Japan- right?

So I wasn't paying attention to this thread over the weekend, and didn't manage to catch all of the demo event impressions... can someone please confirm something that I just heard - Little Mac gets 8 regular colours AND 8 wireframe colours, which is why Wario is assumed to have 16 outfits as well? I totally called that!

(I'm legitimately surprised that we're not up to thread XVI already)

I think a lot of people misunderstand the "attacking a single player relentlessly" thing.

They mean if you focus on a single player to the exclusion of everything else, over and over, over the course of multiple matches, just to bully them. In terms of an ongoing "i am not going to let you have fun" thing. Not "if you attack the guy who's winning you get banned!!!"

Now I'm reading everything here in Bane's voice, which in turn sounds like Sean Connery.

"Indy, mah boy! Only the repentant man shall pass!"

Ok so about all smash series:

Mario: I have played almost every spin off series and every platformer (except NSMB Wii and U). Also every Mario Kart, which is my second favorite series ever.
Luigi
: I have played both Luigi's Mansion. Great stuff both games, though Dark Moon disappointed me a little .
Wario: I have played only Wario Land 4 and Shake it. About the Wario Ware games I have played the first GBA game and touched.
Yoshi: I have played Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story. Don't have interest in the other Yoshi games released so far.
Pokemon: I have Pokemon Black 1&2, Y, HeartGold and Platinum. Only played both Pokemon Stadium of the spin offs.
Zelda: I have played OoT, TP, LA and WWHD. Looking forward to Hyrule Warriors.
Metroid: I have only played Metroid Prime Trilogy and Metroid 2.
Donkey Kong: I have played the Retro DCK games, DK94 and DK64. All fun games.
Star Fox: I have only played 64 and a bit of Adventures. Adventures bored me, so I returned to my friend who had lent me the game.
Xenoblade: Best RPG of last generation, X can't come soon enough.
Kid Icarus: Haven't played the GB game but the other two games are cool, specially Uprising, which is my favorite 3DS game.
Fire Emblem: Played Shadow Dragon but didn't get too far because it was too difficult for me, Awakening was great
