All I need is for 1v1 with no items to perform well within the same country as long as both players have a decent connection. It's fucking 2014 and multiple games have done it. Smash damn well better work in that setting.
It's not so much about actively trying to balance specific characters for specific modes but rather that it is IMPOSSIBLE to completely balance every character so that they are equally good in every situation or against each other. With the variety of ways to play Smash, some characters will naturally excel in some modes over others.

They won handheld E3, that's for sure lol. But as for this E3, it depends on what you're looking at. If you're looking more at 2015, Nintendo or Sony might have one. But looking just at 2014, Microsoft won easily imo.

Yeah, but in Nintendo's conference they reference the official one. Regardless, most people are not buying one without a strong word of mouth campaign that I don't think will get off the ground.
Really, it just looks bad on Nintendo to have Sakurai advocate for an add-on that Nintendo's designers couldn't be arsed to spend the ~$2 to have in the console.
Who are the notable absentees from the (admittedly incomplete) roster thus far? I'm not talking about one-off Pokemon and the likes of Dr. Mario but regular/ popular characters.

Seeing as MR G&W was basically confirmed: Wolf, Cap Falcon, Ice Climbers, Ganondorf, Ness, Lucas (rumored to be cut), Jigglypuff, ROB, Wario, Meta Knight, Falco and Snake. Also Roy and Mewtwo from Melee, who were planned for Brawl too but didn't make it in due to time.

Wasn't there a leak that said Ike wasn't in, having been replaced by Chrom? I was thinking maybe they got the two mixed up. It seems weird Ike and Chrom would both be in besides.

Do not know. The GK leak never mentioned no Ike, so I think that is what people are quoting. I still think Chrom has a shot since FE could have 3 characters. I mean KI got 2 this time around.

We're getting 48 characters minimum. Only ones who could be cut from Brawl at this point are Wolf, Lucas and Snake.
Hrm I think Zelda is going to go the Mario route with the number of characters revealed, with the last one being Ganondorf- So Link, Toon Link, Zelda, Shiek, and Ganondorf. Same with Pokemon and either Jiggly or MewTwo. Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon are the only series in maybe both Melee and Brawl to have four reps (correct me if I'm wrong), and since Mario just got the number to five, hrm, makes me wonder.
But, it's silly to even try and predict these things, Sakurai has proved me wrong enough haha.
And yeah, I don't think all characters are going to be revealed before the game comes out.
