Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

What are you talking about? Robin would most likely have white hair, since that's the default hair color for him/her.

I see platinum blonde hair.

Lucina would NEVER work for smash because she would be too equal to Marth and it would be confusing

Imagine the sense of betrayalthon online if Sakurai picked a SE character that isn't Geno, Sora, Cloud, etc.

Slime, Cactuar, Black mage and Chocobo have more chance than other Square character

I would legitimately main Cactuar.

Just look at him.

The only SE character I see as having any chance is Slime, and even that's a long shot.

SE would probably throw Lightning in just because they want her everywhere.

Plot twist: Final Fantasy 13-3 Part 2 Lightning 4Ever is a 3DS exclusive *also playable on 2DS
Look at all those numbers in one title

Dr Mario was white.
Mario is blue and red.

Lucina is praticaly Marth
With her hair down, her slimmer frame, and her own "spin" on Marth's attire, Lucina would look (and sound) plenty different. In fact, Marth's increased masculinity in SSB4 may be partially the result of Sakurai trying to make him distinct from Lucina.

Gameplay-wise, Lucina could be a clone that is faster, lighter, floatier and quicker to attack, with her own twist here and there on Marth's swordplay.

Kingdom Hearts won't happen because you'd need the Disney side as well in order to give a proper representation. No stage/AT/trophies/stickers of Mickey, Donald, and Goofy just wouldn't be right.

Considering the amount of legal trouble, input from both SE and Disney, as well as the Disney characters not originating in video games, and I think it is safe to say it will never happen.

I think everyone already knows that.

Well... We've had Mario/Dr. Mario before.
Melee's clones are a special case because Sakurai wanted to pad out Melee's roster towards the end of development due to fan demand for more characters. There wasn't a ton of thought put into those character selections.

Obviously I can't speak for Sakurai, but I genuinely feel he's beyond that level of carelessness. He's made it a point in several recent interviews/articles to say that newcomers need to stand out and be unique:

Masahiro Sakurai said:
On the other hand, even if you have a character suited for a fighting game, if you can't make him stick out from the pack and extract something unique from him, then what can you do?
Masahiro Sakurai said:
From there, a list of candidates is refined by evaluating their contribution to the game's roster: "What is the uniqueness of this character? What does this character bring into the Smash Bros. universe? What do they have that other characters don't? How do they complement or contrast other characters?"
Masahiro Sakurai said:
They have to have something really unique that makes them stand apart from other characters in the game, and not limit yourself to characters that are just combat-based.

After reading quotes like those, it's hard for me to justify Lucina or even Chrom as newcomers. All they have going for themselves is that they're relatively new. I think they're worth including as a pair (if it's technically feasible), but individually, they're retreading old ground.

I really enjoyed Melee's story mode. I hope for something similar this time, maybe expanded a bit with more worlds from more franchises.

Chrom and/or Lucina are just so boring gameplay-potential-wise and lacks visual diversity for the roster. I would be sorely disappointed if we get another sword-wielding lord from FE. Unless Sakurai and the team is able to reach into their innermost inspiration and come up with some crazy new innovation for them, I'd prefer Robin or Anna or even no new FE rep at all.

A desire to make them interesting was my rationale behind the Chrom & Lucina "Pair Up" character. But I do think they can be interesting individually. Well, Lucina might be more of a clone, for obvious reasons, although she can be much faster, lighter, etc, to set her apart. But Chrom could be as different from Marth as Ike. At a glance, Ike would look boring, as well, but then Sakurai made a hard-hitting "heavyweight" out of him. There's a lot that can be done.

Dread fighter chrom
bride lucina

A Golden Sun representative could be good for interesting combat mechanics, with the psynergy powers and the sword fighting combined. Not sure that series is on Sakurai's radar though.

Maybe ... if they darken her attire ....

But it is easier just put Chrom as the latest Fire Emblem representant and end this =P

...but then again this smash is the first where Link is not based on his latest game, so I don't know if appealing to the last game is that important

Only one worth choosing is GILGAMESH.

Even if you would just get something from Mario Sports Mix at best.

---------------

FE: Awakening characters will have to be slow. They have no feet and having peg legs is quite troublesome.

I think the worst kinda-sorta-plausible character to get in would be Skylander's Spyro
Syrpro
. Now that, would be worse than Lightning or any non-Cloud, Geno, etc SE rep.

In regards to Melee, you can definitely tell the clones were added last minute as the 6 of them border the outer walls of the roster. Sounds like Sakurai added them out of fear the small number of newcomers wouldn't be well received. (Peach, Bowser, Zelda, Sheik, Ice Climbers, Marth, Mewtwo, Mr. Game & Watch) It makes Mewtwo's exclusion in Brawl even more strange.

The character select screen was likely completely redesigned after the clones were decided on, as I have a hard time believing that they chose the six based on who happened to be on the outer edges. They seem to be intended to "stand apart" from the rest of the cast though.

Regarding Mewtwo, it is kind of strange he was dropped, but most of the clones in Melee were dropped as well--only Ganondorf and Falco made it back, essentially because they actually really did deserve to be in the game (and Young Link was replaced by someone pretty similar). Mewtwo mostly had heavier competition from his own series I think. I do prescribe to the idea that the final Pokemon character came down to Jigglypuff and Mewtwo, and Jigglypuff won out of seniority.
