Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

Actually, now that I think about it, Miiverse stamps for both versions (again could make them exclusive to each system) would be cool, considering how fun they can be unlocking in games like SM3DW & NES Remix. Heck, they could take the place of stickers from Brawl.

The one thing that I'm hoping for, is that the single player mode will be a lot more focused this time around. As much as I love SSBB for the wealth of unlockable goodies (along with the multitude of ways in which you could obtain it), the Subspace Embassy mode just wasn't fun.

We're not getting anything like SSE. It's more likely that we'll end up getting a Melee style adventure mode, if not a much better version of it.

I liked the lottery slot machin in melee a lot more than the minigame brawl had, hope it's back for SmashFor also please don't bring back stickers such a boring and lame feature.

I couldn't disagree more. Stickers are awesome and I liked the minigame, it's more fun than a simple slot machine. They both fit SSB design philosophy of fitting content, fun and fan-service everywhere.

I can understand preferring the slot machine, but I don't see how the existence of stickers can possibly be something bad.

My biggest issue with stickers was how it was impossible to turn them off, and in any game with items on it was easy to grab them by accident instead of attacking like you intended to.

Plus it was mostly just a collection of art I could find on the internet. It's nice, but it doesn't add anything.

stickers were the only thing saving SSE from being absolute garbage

^you know they power up your character in story mode right? lol

Stickers were awesome, and the mini-game was the best.

The slot machine was a bore.

I would love the stickers to be turned into a stamp system though for Miiverse.

So...when are we getting a new picture? I thought it was supposed to be today?

we got a new character didnt you see

idk why nobody made a thread

i expected zeeroid would but i dont see one

They'll probably have stamps for Miiverse instead, similar to Super Mario 3D World and NES Remix. They'll essentially take the same sort of concept/promo art they'd use for stickers, and turn them into black-and-white stamps you can use and modify in your Miiverse posts on WiiU and 3DS.

I wonder if they could do colored stamps and we can use the stickers in all their glory.

I'll take the coin launcher style mini game over just a lottery any day. Though I wouldn't mind both. I'm expecting a completely brand new mini game to grab trophies.

Hopefully we get a few Donkey Kong Country Returns style dioramas as well.

And man we need pictures as well. Much like DKCR's concept art.

The coin launcher minigame was okay, but I loved the lottery. Maybe it's just nostalgia. Preferably both would be in, with a whole new way of getting trophies as well, but who knows what will happen.

It didn't really hit me till the other day how awesome Smash + Miiverse is.

75% of my Melee and Brawl playtime was pausing the game at funny moments, now I can actually share them with other people with ease.

I'm not saying that I don't believe you, but has their been any information about what the Single Player modes be included for Super Smash Bros. 4? 'cause I would love it if there was a Megaman-lite stage in the Adventure Mode, where you can destroy Octopus Batteries & Machine Gun Joe's, and then to top it off with fighting Dr. Wily.

Yeah, taking snapshots will be much more fun. Photography is the best meta game in Smash, and if they add in stamps it will make it even better.

Speaking of Saria, I came across this amazing cosplay/fan art -- it's quite accurate to the art of Ocarina of Time. It's by "Adella."

We know it's not going to be SSE, but that's about it.

Different mini-game per version.

I think I liked coin launcher better in actually being a game, but visually/gameplay wise it wasn't super high on my minigame appreciation list.

not sure what'd work better though.

I for one am glad they're back, very much so. They can be some of the most heartfelt parts of the game for me, actually...Keyword being Can. This was a worthy update, can't wait for the comment.

"Happy New Year!
Pic of the day. There will be trophies in the 3DS and Wii U games, and each version will boast different types and models. The 3DS trophies will be mainly from handhelds and the Wii U version will feature trophies from the home-console games."

FUCK YEAH!!!! In the early interviews, Sakurai hinted that the 3DS game would be more personal, and the U version would be more tailored toward multiplayer, which really made me fear trophies would be 3DS exclusive (it doesn't help that he got a lot of practice with Kid Icarus Uprising for it). But now they're confirmed for both, and while I'm sure I'm in the minority, this makes me happy as hell. Short of a megaton, I've found my personal highlight of the week already.

I love trophies to death, and enjoyed reading the descriptions while I viewed them.

It just seems like the game is about the actual characters meeting instead of trophies or toys now. That's just going by what we've been shown.

I'm still happy to see trophies though. I hope we get original ones like in Melee as well though,

Quite accurate is you ignore the fact that adult Link never plays the Ocarina with Saria outside. ;)

I don't give a fuck if they're ripped assets. It's not as if I've seen every Nintendo asset ever made, so 90% of these will be new to me, regardless.

Also, I rather them not waste resources on trophies will be viewed by many only once.

Some original trophies would be nice but they shouldn't be wasting much time with them. The ripped assets look just fine.

As long as they don't go too overboard. IE, way too many dumb barrel blast trophies in Brawl.

Not to mention that in spite of their being existing assets, most are still new renders. Personally, I enjoy that quite a lot, since they essentially provide additional artwork for certain characters that really need it. New assets are awesome as well, of course (and for like reasons). Case in point:

And there is always the collection craze and the information provided along with the trophies.

I'm not really so much concerned about them not making custom trophies, as nice as it was in Melee, but I really don't want to see a repeat of Brawl's awful trophy collection where practically every model was ripped and the only inclusion was from very recent games.

I'm cool with using pre-existing models, but give me trophies based on old N64 models! Give me trophies with old sprites, ala Melee's Ice Climbers trophy! In Melee, Zelda's trophies included Marin from Link's Awakening, while in Brawl every Zelda trophy was from Wind Waker or Twilight Princess. Don't do that this time, it's boring and kind of defeats the entire purpose of the trophy system.

That, and give me some way to guarantee that I can complete the collection. The Coin Launcher was awful in Brawl because instead of being able to know for certain that you could get that last random trophy by pumping in coins you had to just cross your fingers. I completed Melee's trophy collection 100%, but Brawl's trophy and sticker collections still have holes. All because of shoddy game design! Pretty lame if you ask me.

Yeah I'd settle for Sakurai just turning sprites into "3D Trophies" if it means we'll actually get Mother and WarioWare Trophies.

Does it drive anyone else crazy that they consider OoT a handheld game? I get that it got remade recently, it's just that imo the original release is more relevant for most any game. It really takes away from the whole 'theme' in the 3DS version to me.

I prefer it over having almost exclusively Wind Waker style Zelda assets. I don't mind them recognizing recent handheld rereleases since it keeps the platform relevant and the content more contemporary. There's plenty of console Zelda to pull from but less varied handheld entries.

So we're starting to see or at least hear more about what kind of things are exclusive between the two versions. We already knew some stages were exclusive (spirit tracks and that 3D Land stage for example) but now we're getting different trophies (not assist trophies...yet). Makes me wonder what else Sakurai will make unique with both.

Come on TWEWY stage and or assist trophy for 3DS version!

I'm guessing we'll see DK Returns 3D as the 3DS stage (the waterwheel in the first trailer?), Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze as the Wii U Stage?

But I really hope we get more "original Stages" though, the only stage I think we've gotten that wasn't pulled from pre-existing assets is Battlefield. :(

e already knew some stages were exclusive (spirit tracks and that 3D Land stage for example
ALL the stages bar Battlefield shown so far seem to be exclusive.

I am very interested in knowing if these games will come out at the same time. I know Sakurai said they might not necessarily do so, but that was a while ago. I would prefer a simultaneous release personally.

They both seem to be on the same level. Same characters shown, same amount of stages, trophies.

Only thing that hasn't been shown on 3DS is many items/assists.

I have no problem with it being a WiiU timed exclusive.

Then again that's because I'm planning to get a WiiU for the game anyway. I doubt I'll even pick up the 3DS version, as nice as it looks.

I think a Wii U release first would be smart business-wise in order to build more hype for their struggling console, and releasing the 3DS version at the same time might cannibalize sales a bit. That said, I think they'll release relatively close to one another.

I wouldn't want to see all PH/ST stuff either... but I think it'd be really cool to have Link's Awakening, Oracles, and Minish Cap get stages and such. So far these games feel like they're leaning a bit hard towards the contemporary side; preferably it'd be an even balance. Can't argue that it's a good business decision though I suppose.

Having stuff from Super Mario World Advance or DKCR in the 3DS version seems like it's just wasting excuses they could have had to show of Super Mario Land or DK94/Mario vs DK stuff, for example. The 'lesser' handheld series entries that probably wouldn't/won't be very embraced.

I wonder if we might get a Tetris stage.

No one owns Tetris anymore, right? And it's pretty important to Nintendo's history.

Random musing:

It would be cool if, along with unlocking these supposed "console/handheld trophies", they let you use some sort of filter which lets you play the game as if it looked like it were on that platform.

Ripped assets are ok if you don't go over board with them. Brawl went overboard.

Basically if it wasn't in the Other section (home to all the new models) it felt like a booby prize.

Some of Kirby's ability and enemy trophies were new, but that's about it.

I know we don't know much about the mechanics yet but just looking through the "Which version will you get?" thread, it seems like hit stun is back. Does it appear that way to anyone else? Or am I just super late/way off?
