Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 2: Where Pilotwings is apparently Minecraft

Wow from Weegee pics to a burning Gerudo Valley to the pilotwings stage to this! This has indeed been a great week for screenshots.

It's been a good two months since the reveal. I guess the earliest we may see a new character or two is at the TGS in September?

Can't imagine it happening then.

Its possible that Nintendo might reveal it in their Pre-TGS event. I kept hearing that people think Nintendo is going to host Pre-TGS event or something. They didn't last year, so what made people thinking that they would host again this year?

Have you played Pilotwings Resort? As shallow of a game as it may be, it makes it plainly apparent what a great locale Wuhu Island is for jetpacking and gliding around.

I played it. My problem is basically this:

Does this mean Pilotwings SNES exist in Wuhuverse

I'm a huge Pilotwings fan, and even though I had some fun with it, Pilotwings Resort just didn't feel like Pilotwings to me. Everything, from the presence of Wuhu Island to the name makes it seem more like an extension of the Wii Sports franchise. I really loved the idea of revisiting one of the classic island stages from the SNES game; I don't need Nintendo to remind me that they took the name of one of my favorite childhood games and slapped it on a shallow Wii Sports spin-off. To me, putting the island there acknowledges Pilotwings Resort as a legitimate part of the series (even though it has nothing to do with becoming a better pilot to earn to your license as was the objective in the previous two games) and not a glorified 3DS tech demo. It also tastelessly wrecks the nostalgia of the stage, in my opinion. Its no longer a "SNES Pilotwings celeberation" stage, but more like a stage that tries to celebrate the whole franchise (there will probably be PW64 elements revealed in future screenshots), which is just weird if you ask me.

Sweeeeeeet, a new item! Looks freakin' insane, especially for the smaller stages. Kind of hoping we'll see more uses of items (including old ones) in future screenshots considering this is really the only item we're aware of aside from Smash Balls.

I'm definitely hyped about X-Bomb and it look gorgeous.

Don't forget capsule in Developer's Direct.

KIU essentially revived the franchise, so it's really great to see more. Also, Palutena is a given! :D

Don't get your hope too high. I'm hoping to see Palutena but I have a bad feeling about it for some reason.

Brawl Hype Era

The night of the great Japanese-release leak... I had a terrible final the next morning, but I stayed up all night refreshing as some kid with a feed uploaded the entirety of SSE. It was one of the worst decisions I've ever made; it was one of the most magical nights of my life.

Rather disappointed Luigi doesn't appear to have a new move set.
Same for Mario. What gives? I'm still excited, but it looks like an enhanced Brawl right now.

Smash Bros. move sets rarely change drastically. Was Melee an enhanced SSB64? Was Brawl an enhanced Melee?

I don't mind that they're the same, but I'd have preferred that they got new stuff. Like Luigi could've gotten stuff from Luigi's Mansion and Mario & Luigi's Dream Team. You would think that since they remodel and reanimate all veterans (they do), that during the process, they would change things up (they did for Bowser from what we've seen).

I don't think it matters much if they have the same movesets as long as they're viable. I think Bowser had to get changed because he couldn't really keep up with other characters, which was especially evident in free-for-all matches. Though you never know, we haven't seen their full SSB4 movesets so maybe they'll sneak something in there somewhere.

I guess Sakurai rather to keep Joke Luigi than Serious Business Vacuum Luigi. :lol

We're going to get less and less "new" with each roster. A way to mitigate the diminishing returns would be to shake up the pre-existing characters.

Wow, I don't even really remember that weapon from Uprising (let alone it making an x shpe, lol). Looks pretty cool, but also kinda cheap.

I feel like the Eggplant Bomb is a more obvious choice.

What do you mean by that?
Well, Nintendo isn't exactly bustling with new characters every generation. The Wii one was remarkably dry, for instance.

Now, there are a few character-based eShop games that you could probably focus on - I know Boss Doggie would be quick to point out Dillon, and I agree with him on that one (I disagree that he'd be a good Sonic replacement, but I think BD only brought that up in the event that Sonic couldn't be present personally). There's also the guy from Sakura Samuari, I suppose, although Takamaru would probably be a better choice. Mallo doesn't fight, so he wouldn't work very well...

After working through those, we're starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel. There are only so many obvious choices, y'know?

Mallo doesn't fight, so he wouldn't work very well...

As established with Villager that doesn't really matter. Mallo not doing anything other than jump and push blocks is a bigger mark against him, since working puzzle gameplay into Smash probably wouldn't equate to a fighter very easily.

Less newcomers.

Huh? Such trend never happened.

64 started with 12 fighters
Melee introduced 13 new fighters
Brawl introduced 15 new fighters

This isn't counting transformation or multiple in one characters.

EDIT: Reading your post again... am I misreading you and you actually mean from SSB4 onward we'll get less and less newcomers? If so then disregard my post.

okay yeah, I totally misread you there. I should get some sleep. I agree with your post now that I understand it, well sort of. We really don't have a lot of options left for the roster for sure. 15 newcomers might be possible but... eh... It's hard to imagine it now that I think about it. Surprise me Sakurai.

Also, Nintendo make more exciting IPs please :(

I certainly agree with RawkHawk in that we aren't going to get as many newcomers this time around. There just aren't a lot of worthy characters left. It's telling that only three newcomers were announced along with this game (five newcomers were announced with Brawl).

Or maybe Sakurai listened to everyone complaining how the majority of the new characters were revealed before release.

I'm betting on at least 7-9 more newcomers.

It's possible but I disagreed with your comments about worthy characters.

What If Sakurai dont' want to reveal too much newcomers this time becauses of backlashes from the fans. I'm pretty sure that we will have more newcomers for secret characters tho. Do you actually expect that Sakurai to follow the traditional of announcing 5 characters? However I'm pretty sure that Sakura might want to do the reveals differently this time.

What if we get superior Wind Waker Ganondorf this time? WWHD will be the lastest home installment of Zelda when Smash Bros. will release
(and Ganondorf wasn't in Skyward Sword).

Oh man don't get me excited.

I doubt that'd happen though, we've still got Realistic Link in there. Realistic Ganondorf is probably his most appropriate counterpart.

Unless we have Link AND Toon Link and Ganondorf AND Toon Ganondorf! I predict a giant-bird related moveset.

It would be cool if each Zelda character represented a different Zelda game.

Twilight Princess Link
Ocarina Zelda/Sheik
Wind Waker Ganondorf
LTTP Young Link.

that shit was incredible. There must have been 10 brawl leak threads on /v/ totally maxed out that night. I wore out my f5 button.

I wonder if Smash 4 will release first in Japan this time around.
I'll be importing a Japanese Wii U if that is the case ; _ ;

I suppose my "problem" is that I have this cemented idea of what Smash Bros. is and should be, and with that comes a very limited pool of playable characters that I would be okay with. Villager and Wii Fit Trainer both fall in line with what I've come to expect out of the series. This isn't PlayStation All-Stars where any old game can get a character -- the high standards of Smash Bros.' roster selection is what I feel most shapes its identity. The game just wouldn't feel the same to me with characters like Wonder Red, Chibi-Robo, and Isaac muddying the roster. (I know, I'm pretty weird.)

Think there'll be a similar leak this time? I really hate blacking out for games a few whole months beforehand

I agree with your idea for sure, though maybe not with the specified characters. If the W101 is Nintendo's new IP(I'm still not clear) and its going to get some sort of franchise treatment in the future then I think Wonder Red would make a great inclusion. Every character in Smash has been some sort of icon, or really important figure from their series, for the most part. At the same time Sakurai does like including lesser known, less popular characters from a series that may be entirely dead or just really small in the public eye. Pit comes to mind specifically. As gamers we wanted more from his universe but who was Pit at the time? Just another long forgotten hero of the NES and Game Boy era.

Then again, its only after characters are in do they feel even more like massive icons. At least for me. Seems like if Issac did get in there would be some sort of revival in his fan base, not necessarily his games, but just how iconic he would appear afterward.

Another random stage thought:

What will the Kirby stages be? The most common thoughts on this I've seen have been things from Return to Dreamland, but Kirby is like the one series that I don't think has a history of pulling stuff from the latest game releases in Smash for stages. Sakurai tends to pull things from further back, possibly because he's more familiar with it than the other series (or perhaps not).

The most iconic Kirby location from the series period that hasn't been represented yet I think is King Dedede's arena, but with the boxing arena stage we already have, I really doubt it (though maybe in the 3DS version, as the boxing arena stage doesn't appear to be in it).

I dunno, just random musings.

I tend to fully agree with your position actually. I can't even see myself spriting a character like Wonder Red or Chibi-Robo.

I want a high quality HD remake of Fountain of Dreams.

An arena based on the ring from KSSU's Revenge of the King would be fantastic. Randomly turning into an electrified cage, and maybe have Dan pop in with the mecha hammer to wreak havoc.

Just off the top of my head, some other fairly iconic Kirby locations they haven't touched on...

Bubbly Clouds (have Kracko Jr. and Sr. pop in for antics, maybe Kabula too)
Galactic Nova (inside or out, fighting in the core could be pretty neat)
Castle Dedede Proper (Has two fairly iconic designs that could probably work their way as arenas)
Lor Starcutter (Have it traveling through the void like in KRTDL as Landia assaults it)
