Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 2: Where Pilotwings is apparently Minecraft

People hating on Mewtwo aren't cool enough. Next you jerks are going to hate on poor innocent Dunsparce and Squirtle and Blastoise and and...

Mewtwo is Mewone.

DA BEST MAYNE

The funny thing is, despite the "Pokemon are no longer animals!" claim, we only have three Pokemon shown so far in Gen VI which aren't animals...Honedge, Orotto, and Flabebe. I guess Swirlix and Spritzee are debatable, but they share characteristics enough with a dog/bird that I count them as animals.

I was actually relieved by Flabebe when I saw it because I like non-animal Pokemon quite a bit, and was a bit bored by just seeing them so far.

Wowww, I didn't know about Orotto. That thing looks based

I know, but even as early as Silver the designs started to look...oddly formulaic. I'm not sure I can adequately convey what I mean by that, but let's just say that after Gen One, Ken Sugimori (or whoever took over at that point) got on an "exotic" design kick, and never really got off of it.

Circles, stripes, diamonds, triangles...there's this weird "tribal paint" meme that continues from this point until the present day. Its like " hey, let's just take a bunch of basic shapes, connect them in weird, cartoonish ways, cover it with a bunch of weird multicolor lines and call it a day." I'm not sure I'd call the original 150 designs organic, but it wasn't this. Thing is, these never looked cool to me, even when Gold & Silver were first released. I don't think I outgrew Pokémon, but my tastes never matched where Nintendo took the series from then on.

Erm what

If anything Gen 2 onwards is what the design team wanted to do in the first place. The designs of Gen 1 are all muddled because of graphical limitation of the GB. That's why you have shit like copy paste templates of Kangaskhan/Rhydon/Nidoking, Clefable/Wigglytuff/Chansey/Gengar, and the like. Are you going to argue that animals which said Pokemon are based from don't exhibit random lines, shapes, and "tattoos"? What about Gen 1 mons like the generic kaijuu template used by Rhydon etc. having random diamond patterns? Or how Raichu has elf like ears? etc.

Also Sugimori isn't the only person designing mons. It's actually a team, most of which still remain as of Gen 5. It's just Sugimori who does the official art.

A bunch of Pokemon nowadays have designs in theme as well as looks. Before you have shit like Clefairy being... something, now you have, say, a ghost based on the Japanese "rain" sock. Hell, Pangoro is a very creative interpretation of the bancho look to go along with its description, compared to... oh, say, Hitmonlee (wtf is that thing).

Lucario is a godawful Mewtwo wannabe. He stands out as particularly godawful even among the legions of godawful-looking, uninspired Pokemon that Nintendo made after Generation One ended.

/Jaded old Pokémon Red, Blue & Yellow fan. Mew and Mewtwo 4 life. Come at me bros.

You cannot say Pokemon became "uninspired" when they managed to pull out many designs that are visually distinct. If anything, I like how more defined they are and less "generic". When you think of a generic fish, you'd end up with Goldeen. You wouldn't think of a specific "betta fighter bass" Basculin or the "hahah sand troll fish" Stunfisk.

Also Lucario can't be a Mewtwo-wannabe. Unlike Mewtwo, Lucario's theme is pretty much inspired by the quintessential fighting game archetype - the "shotoclone". While Mewtwo is a psychic abomination of a cat fetus, Lucario is a fighter who uses aura. They are two very distinct characters with even different playstyles in both Pokemon and Smash (and in Smash, Lucario actually doesn't suck :P)

But it seems like you didn't really go much into the Pokemon stuff and is limited to the first generation.

Well I love Akuma so it works out great for me.

We should have Ganny and Demise. Need another Zelda villain. Although Wind Mage Vaati would be great as well.

Akuma love * brofist*

Ganny, that is cute. Vaati should come back seems like a cool dude.

I just think Mewtwo is badass. Nothing to do with him being "first".

That is fine, my view on matters is in no way absolute.

you worship false Idols.

I really want Arceus as a stage hazard. Causing shit to stir up in random directions or so.

That or have it as a Pokeball Pokemon and instantly KOs all other enemies.

Or maybe even playable!

I like you.

Unexpected, but thanks!

I don't really have much of a counter-argument to any of this, simply because what you find generic I call good, clean design and vice-versa. To that end, I think the majority of the post-151 Pokémon come from such a wildly different design sensibility that, to me, they'll always seem inconsistent with the "look" of Pokémon established in the first game. I don't really how to put it into words any better than that...I just loved the original 151 and wasn't very impressed with the ones that came afterward, even though I was still into Pokémon at the time (played the hell out of Pokémon Snap) and planned on buying Gold or Silver (I continued watching the anime, didn't stop until sometime during the third season, and kept up with the film series until 4ever). So I don't think its a matter of me not giving the new games a chance...I was still connected via the other branches of the franchise, but I never liked what I saw.

You wouldn't be the only ones, actually.

If I had it my way, Ganon would be a separate character, as the OoT/TP-era Ganon and the classic Ganon have definitely become their own characters. To say the least, they would certainly warrant being their own characters even more than Link and Young/Toon Link do.Not to mention that the Blue Boar is due for a comeback, thanks to ALBW...

OMG YES. He'd have to wield the trident of course. I wouldn't mind if he replaced Captain Falcon - *cough* I mean Ganondorf.

Gen 2 is not even where the Pokemon designs went down hill, it was mainly after Gen 3. Although there are some really ugly unimaginative ones in Gen 3, it made it out with some very nice memorable Pokemon designs. Gen 4 onward though, yea, most of them are pretty bad.

One question. How does it eat. Does food go down the tiny neck or does it alternate between tiny neck and the back tube thing or what?

Food goes down it's normal tiny neck. The back tube is a giant Vein if you will. That supplies extra bloodflow to his brain. This is what allows him to use his powerful psychic powers without his brain shutting down due to excessive stress.

Is that cannon?, I would believe it

I'm surprised Nintendo didn't put Arceus in Brawl despite DP being roughly a year old or so.

Hilariously enough, it's a pretty regular reaction. Usually the first games of a long-running franchise tend to be different. Some for good, some for better, or just changed.

The only reason, why i would believe the rumor-list, is that the person stats the reveal of ZSS tomorrow. While some other reveals before majors launch of games make prefect sense, why would the guy disprove himself that early with ZSS. Interesting to see, if the few weeks of fame, were worth it for him.

Heh, Zero Suit Ridley. So either it's Ridley being "nude" or it's Samus "fursuiting" (scalesuiting?) as Ridley.

Hmm... I want Kid Icarus and Saint Seiya to cross over
