SWAT 4 impressions?

I recently played the demo for SWAT 4, and I really enjoyed it. I'm considering picking the game up, but I have a couple questions for people who have the full version.

Are all the missions similar? I'm hoping for variety. I mean the demo is awesome, but it occured to me because of the nature of the game the missions might be all basically the same and get tedious because of it.

Any general impressions on it?

Thanks.

I'm up to the "Red Library Software" mission and there has been a decent amount of variety. A lot of them are barricaded hostage situations but the further you get, the more you encounter suspects that are wearing gasmasks and whatnot so you have to alter your tactics. There seems to weird AI bugs though, there's a lot of times where I'll move into a room and the enemy will be staring at the wall for no reason.

its very good, in answer to your question there is variation and it manifests itself in 2 ways:

1, placement of tangos changes every time you play
2, some nice variation in missions

its wonderful in co-op, especially on Elite. the tangos generally do not comply and they are more prone to doing crazy stuff like shooting at you while you are trying to make a hostage comply by pepper-spraying them in the face.

if you like the demo, get the game, simple as that.

One of the things I loved about SWAT 3 and I'm curious about is that in addition to different placement, sometimes the suspects react differently as well. For example, one guy once charged directly at the squad with a clear death wish... other times in the same mission he was easy to take down nonviolently.

Cool fellahs, thanks for the impressions. I've got 30 bucks store credit, so I'll pick it up. Maybe get the Doom expansion pack as well. *dodges tomatoes*

It's times like this that I hate my damn computer. I loved Swat 3 so fucking much.

*prays for a console port*

That's in Swat 4 too.

MAybe I am going against the grain here... but is anyone else getting sick of these counterstrike-clone-games? I for one would like to see Sierra go back to thier roots and make a Police Quest type game, remeber those? Driving around a city breaking up domestic disputes or what not. I would even like to see a good detective type game like Police Quest 4. But those days seem long gone, now its all about tactical FPS. I remember when the xbox first launched there was this hype that there was a COPS game in the making for the xbox. I was so excited but sadly it never came to be. So whose with me?

I think it's incorrect to call SWAT 4 a "Counterstrike clone."

First, I think it's much more grounded in reality than Counterstrike (based on SWAT 3), and second, SWAT 3's release came maybe three or four months after Counterstrike went public -- so unless it was really short in development, it's its own game :)

Anyhow, to answer the question, IMO the only tactical games really worth a damn are those that are realistic like this. And I frankly prefer the police/SWAT team approach than the Rainbow Six-style "tactics' games.

EDIT: Although I think a "Police Quest" style game would be cool.

Also IMO, SWAT 3 has always been a better game than any variation of Half-Life. *ducks and runs away*

Doom3 RoE is quite good too and is well worth a look Biff.
although it tries to cross the huge divide to Half-life2 (bizarely i think) it looks absolutely amazing and it has quite a lot of diversity.
