Switch 2: Sony says PS5 performance required for ‘great experience on a big screen’

Are they? I suppose it depends on how big your TV set is and how distant you sit from.
Well, let's see what the "average joe" thinks about it now that Switch 2 is available cause diminshing returns are kicking strong by the point we are today.

No...
I remember the Switch launch... The same hype and lots of publishers promises to release games and in the end... nothing.
Switch 1 launched with Zelda: Breath of the Wild, 1-2 Switch, Super Bomberman R, Just Dance 2014 and Skylanders: Imaginators at retails.
I'd say the situation for third-party games improved considerably for Switch 2 launch: Cyberpunk 2077, Bravely Default HD, Yakuza 0 DC, Street Fighter 6, Hogwarts Legacy, Rune Factory: GoA, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Sonic x Shadow Generations, Civilization VII, Split Fiction, Hitman World of Assasination.

With HDMI 2.0 output in a year 2025. Sure. bud.

The level of Nintendo copium here is something else. Is it so hard to accept that the two console platforms are making their own things where Sony is pushing the blockbuster experience and Nintendo is being Nintendo? Tha's what the quote basically says.
What's wrong with HDMI 2.0 exactly?

Even with an RTX 4080/5080 you're not exceeding HDMI 2.0 capabilities on a 4K panel. They are 4K 30-60fps cards. Not 4K 120fps.

Cyberpunk 2077 - COVID 19 edition.
Drive through a deserted futuristic city because all NPCs have to stay home to not catch the virus.
Switch 1 launched with Zelda: Breath of the Wild, 1-2 Switch, Super Bomberman R, Just Dance 2014 and Skylanders: Imaginators at retails.

Nearly all of those are old last gen games. Where are the "current" games? Or the announcement of Switch 2 versions of current games?
Even Game Freak's new game is not announced for Switch 2.

And there are barely any NPCs/vehicles on the road, texture quality / 3d asset quality is reduced across the scene, no ray tracing let alone path tracing.

Cyberpunk looks pretty cool on Switch 2 but the PS5 and especially PC versions are completely different experiences.

Why stop there?

PC is ultimately king of graphics on a big screen.
You are right, but why would they say that 😂?The twist would then be "experience" (more hand wavey to pin them down on), how their games are good because they are developed for a single hardware spec and driver combo (PC does not exist, PC is an ecosystem of multiple devices), etc… etc…

They will build the same argument to convince people that their games are best on their devices and viceversa that Nintendo does to get people to buy their consoles, like the both of us here.

I believe Sony's argument is that they are the best TV experience for the money.

Of course it won't compare to a high end $2000 USD PC with RTX 4080/5080, or top of the line $5000 PC experience with RTX 5090.

Playstations have always been meant to be affordable for the masses, only exception being PS3 sorta. But the PS3 was cheap in its own ways back then.
Standalone bluray drives early on were $800-1000 USD, and PS3 was a whole semi high end system (not much ram, last gen Nvidia GPU, all else good) for $500-600 USD.

He's correct but it also depends on the game. Some look like shit on PS5 as well.
I said something similar recently in a S2/SD thread.
If you are using a handheld as you are meant to, in your hand and not on a big TV, Switch 2 and Steam Deck should be absolutely fine. Switch 2 should be fine docked on about 32 inch screens, large 4k screens maybe not but we will have to see.

While Sony doesn't have much going on at the moment, a Switch 1 port of an overpriced standalone expansion isn't the best example of a great experience on the big screen for the Switch 2.
Ironically Sony has a new sandbox type game coming in a fortnight that will look amazing on a big screen (Death Stranding 2)

"completely different experiences" lol

NPCs are shit in Cyberpunk, less of them is probably better for the user. PS5 only has RT shadows.

How could an average human survive this?

Is it? I'm having a blast playing TOTK on Switch 2.

Well, that's a last-gen game built on the foundations of a game firmly from the PS360 era in terms of tech. He's clearly talking about current gen games, and yes, there the Switch 2 will struggle greatly compared to the PS5, just like Switch vs PS4.

Nintendo were always behind tech wise and they're always successful and always will be. Why? Because they have their own identity and people love it. If Nintendo wanna go the PS/XB they simply can but they don't. Don't fix what's not broken. Having an identity is enough and we have seen that with them for a very long time.

Me for example, mainly PC player, everything maxed, so you can imagine what I see and feel when I play. Yet, playing on a Nintendo doesn't make me say "I wish Nintendo makes something powerful like a PC" because I'm absolutely fine with their identity and I love it

It seems like comparing a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe to a Honda Civic. Vaguely similar but they aren't really trying to fill the same role in the market.

Tell that to the great expirence we had for the past 8 years with Smash and Mario Kart, the AAA thinking mentality is delusional at this point

Oof.

Sony, just congratulate the industry leader and call it a day lol
They are talking to investors, not us/Nintendo.
Speaking during a Sony business segment meeting on Friday, Sony Interactive Entertainment's new president and CEO, Hideaki Nishino, was asked if he was concerned that Switch 2's improved specs and Nintendo's improved relationships with third-party publishers would provide tougher competition for PlayStation in the coming years.

Is it? I'm having a blast playing TOTK on Switch 2.

of course not, its pure bullshit. If they really believed what they're saying, why do they have the Portal? I enjoy playing my PS5 games when I'm away from home even if it is on a smaller screen.

Troll better. Nintendo are charging people 70 bucks for a breath of the wild switch 2 version when that game originally came out on the wii u. Nintendo are also charging people more money to play old games and using the excuse that 'it's upgraded for switch 2' when all they did is raise the resolution and framerate for crying out loud.
Let's be real, anyone paying full price for the SW2 versions of BoTW or ToTK either doesn't know any better or just doesn't care. Most people already own the games and got the SW2 upgrade for free through NSO. Worst case, you grab a used copy for $30–$40 on eBay and pay the $10 upgrade fee. And yeah, it's not just resolution and framerate, there's HDR, faster load times, improved textures & lighting, better draw distances, & enhanced particle effects. It's a solid upgrade, but definitely not worth a full-price double dip…but then there's really no need to do so.

Mario Kart looks very impressive visually and DK Bonanza is going to as well. This will be the 1st gen since the GameCube where Nintendo is within spitting distance of Series S power and their teams can show off more than usual.

I don't think your description of TotK is accurate, and it looks awesome on my 98" tv. Sony is wrong here, and frankly, it sounds scared and defensive.
Scared of who.....Nintendo? The company Sony already chased out of the console market years ago? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Microsoft is a trillion dollar company and they still couldnt even get Indianna Jones to compete with a game that came out a decade ago...

Yeah, Im sure Sony is real scared of this 80$ game:

What the fuck?

2.0 was outdated when it came out. You can't even show full RGB 4:4:4 60hz 4k HDR, you are limited to 4:2:2.

With 2.1 you can show full RGB 4:4:4 4k 120hz HDR 4k.

RTX 4080 can play shit ton of games in 120hz 4k, the key here is DLSS for newer games. Something that Switch 2 also relies on. You also have VRR support so even drops from 120fps are not an issue.
