Got mine on launch day. My thoughts:
The system itself:
I like the look and feel of the device. The handheld feature is just so valuable to me. I use it all the time. The screen is a nice size, but there's a lot of bezel, so there's still room for improvement for a smaller footprint or bigger screen. The Joy-con don't bother me at all in how they feel, but they don't attach that well to my system. I haven't removed them that often (mostly play in handheld mode, and I also have a Pro controller for docked use) but they still wiggle a bit. Would prefer a rock-solid feel for those parts.
The docks are a bit iffy too. People scratched their screens because of it, and I had a real fear of that happening to mine as well. Since most of it is just empty plastic shell anyways, why didn't they go for a compact design that doesn't interfere with the screen at all? Can't wait to get the third party travel dock for my other room, partially because charging while playing in handheld mode is annoying with just the one charger the system ships with.
I feel like there's not that much to do with the system software either. There's no real diary, media playback, mini-games or other fun features. Something like Badge Arcade would be nice. When is streaming and recording happening? There's some stuff that seems kinda glitchy (like the Wi-Fi) or is just straight up missing (save transfers) as well. The firmware will need some work.
The online stuff is still one big question mark. I'm not exactly jumping at the opportunity to pay for online play. The stuff they're offering doesn't sound that great. Forcing players to use a phone app to do basic stuff like invites and forming parties is unacceptable. All of these things don't leave me very hopeful for the future. At least it's somewhat cheap.
Software:
Nintendo is providing a steady flow of new exclusive games, with some third party sprinkles. I'm very satisfied with the current releases and the pace at which they are released. The rest of the year looks good as well, and I really hope they can keep this up. Hopefully they'll attract more third party releases in the future, and VC would be nice as well.
Zelda Breath of the Wild: 8/10
I had a lot of fun with this game, but I don't think it's as amazing as a lot of people say. After a while I found that the world is just quite empty with no real suprises to discover. The story sucks and so do most of the classic Zelda elements like dungeons. The open world Zelda formula still needs a lot of tweaking.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 7
I already enjoyed MK8 on Wii U, and this Deluxe version honestly doesn't offer much more. It's nice to have Mario Kart on the go, but I am really disappointed that they didn't add some new cups. That would have been enough for me.
Puyo Puyo Tetris: 8
A fantastic puzzle game that I'd recommend to everyone. I'd already played it on PS4 (import), so this release wasn't as exciting to me as it might be to others.
ARMS: 6
I really wanted to like ARMS, but I just don't. The world Nintendo has built here fascinates me. Unfortunately there's just not enough depth to the gameplay (that I found anyway) and content to support it, and really draw me in. I don't feel like the DLC is going to change that at all.
Splatoon 2: 9
In my opinion the best game on Switch right now. The most important thing is the base concept, which is just brilliant. I can't get enough of painting everything, and there's tons of ways to do it, with all the different weaponry. There's loads of content across the various modes, and lots of gear to collect. They keep adding to the game as well, with new weapons every week, new maps and Splatfests. The only downside is their insisting on map and mode rotations. It's unacceptable that players are forced to play just a handful of maps every two hours. It has happened that I played the same damn map 6 matches in a row. Also, if I want to play Salmon Run, just let me. At all times.
Overall I'm pretty satisfied. Couldn't expect much more from a system's first year. The most important thing, the games, are already here, so the rest are just somewhat minor complaints. One last thing I'd like to add, is that I am a bit disappointed in how much Nintendo is still investing in 3DS. It'd be fine if those games all came to Switch as well, but they're not. Get on that Nintendo, or just drop the damn thing.
