Today, we have a look at the Nintendo Switch 2 three months since its launch. We'll re-evaluate the hardware, look at the software situation and touch on more external factors such as a lack of dev kits being handed out to the dreaded game key cards. How do we feel about it now? Let's find out...

00:00 - Intro
00:56 - Hardware
07:16 - Software
09:08 - Lack of Dev Kits?
13:34 - Game Key Cards
17:48 - Final Thoughts
19:27 - Outro

I started to watch this an hour or so ago, because I generally like SwitchUp's coverage, but I turned it off about a third of the way through, because it seemed like they were just rehashing stuff that has been discussed to death.

I think I was hoping for something that offered fresher (or sharper) insights on Nintendo's overall strategy so far.

The devkit angle is potentially interesting, but they didn't seem to be going anywhere with it beyond what's widely known/rumored.

Edit: I feel like a lot of Nintendo fan channels have bungled the transition to the Switch 2. They all seem to be either just kind of pushing empty hype and rumor-mongering (like Nintendo Prime) or they've become joyless wet blankets (like Arlo). The only channel I can think of that still has interesting takes that aren't just bitching or blowing smoke is Nintendo Forecast.

With Cyberpunk and Outlaws, this system demonstrates this party's just getting started.

EDIT- Madden, too.

I largely skipped the first switch. Got one at launch but sold it in the summer of 18. The hardware just wasn't up to snuff for my preferences. The games were great though.

It Nintendo can match or surpass the quality of games they put out for the first switch, this will likely be my favorite console ever. Got one at launch and have bought loads of switch 1 games I've missed out on. Console is great so far.

Its an alright hybrid.

I'd prefer traditional console than this hybrid model. I think the dock is very shitty. My Switch 2 gets so incredibly hot after a session. It also stays very warm when docked in sleep mode. I end up truning off completely and leave it undocked when I know im done playing.

played Breath of the Wild and DKB. Both were excellent. Couldn't be happier so far. Looking forward to Metroid 4. Hopefully more patches for older Switch games are on the way

I haven't touched mine since I finished Donkey Kong several weeks ago. I should see if there's anything new on the store, but there wasn't much activity in the launch period and most of the games I hear about seem to be Switch 1 versions.

Where are the Switch 2 games?

My kids are the ones doing most of the gaming on Switch 2, though we play MKW and Smash Bros.

On the go, I'm actually quite impressed with the hardware. Display looks really big and expansive

Haven't played mine much lately.
MK world I played a good month worth, DK after- not done yet. Not interested in anything third party I've already played elsewhere.

Overall, i'm happy.

Tears of the Kingdom is an entirely different game in my eyes from the original Switch version. Such a good game as well.

Donkey Kong Bananza didn't wow me but it's ok.

Star Wars Outlaws is my biggest surprise. Looks and plays great. Most of my time on the console is on this now.

Mario Kart World was pretty disappointing though, not sure where the game goes from here.

But overall good and looking forward to Metroid Prime and even sports games like FIFA on the go.

SwitchUp and Switch Corner are the only channels I pay attention to but it's definitely been a weird transition for content creators. There's just not a whole lot to discuss outside of the biggest Nintendo releases.

The heavy reliance on backwards compatibility is similar to the Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 launch. Makes the early period feel dull and uninteresting. Weekly sales are still just Switch games. Had more devs been given dev kits we'd have a lot more to talk about IMO. Feels like we're spinning our wheels here.

Andres Restart is my current pick, not because I rely on him for news but because he has sharp insights and is reasonable-minded. Can't watch Prime anymore, just way too much. Switchforce is fine but he's taking the fake leaker thing way too far and a bit annoying at this point.

I watch AndresRestart too. Of all the "rumor roundup" style channels, he's by far the least abrasive. As you said, he's a lot more thoughtful and reasonable in his analysis than others. He's still very much feeding the hype cycle, but at least he's more cautious and less prone to pumping out straight-up bullshit.

I agree that Prime is completely unwatchable and I bailed on Switchforce a few years ago, though I don't remember exactly why.

As long as the system can run the next Xenoblade at a (minimum) stable 30 fps I don't really care about any 3rd party support or drama.

I'll 100% have both a Switch² and a grip ready for a day one purchase of that game.

I'm insanely happy with it so far. The console is better in every way, except for LCD vs OLED.

I've really been enjoying going through the back catalog and playing games that were unstable on Switch at a locked framerate now. And 120hz support is awesome. Makes Silksong feel so good.

Bigtime happy with the Switch 2. I've played it more in the last 3 months than I did the PS5 during its entire first year.

had it for a month now

MK world is ok so far
guess mario wonder hasnt gotten an upgrade--switch1 + mcable looks way better
will get DK red faction eventually maybe

unrelated (?) but my two switch1pro controllers have bad stick drift now

Yup

Zelda upgrades are good
DKB is as of now my GOTY, what a fun game
MKB didn't sink its hook in me but I was never a big MK fan. Will still revisit it many times throughout the years and with my kids.

I have all Xenoblade games including X which I never played waiting for the inevitable patch for upgrade.

Highly anticipating Metroid Prime 4.

I'm still on the probly going to skip this one side of things.
I'm just not that into Nintendo.
My kids have not asked for one either. They are even less into Nintendo than me.

edit-but maybe when the OLED comes out.

I'm very happy with mine especially if Nintendo continues give me quality games like DK Bananza and more importantly I can't wait Monolith Soft new game on Switch 2.

I feel like I'm not getting enough out of it... But that's Nintendo's fault and its Keycards.

I now have 2 games... It would have easily been more than 5, if it weren't for that.

I'd be happy if AI: The Somnium Files were a full version.

But I'm currently playing Final Fantasy IX and loving it.

Very satisfied after playing Mario Kart and Bananza. Now I'm playing Silksong on it, and it's phenomenal.

The only downside is that some games recently came out without dedicated versions, and I really wanted to play them on a portable device... Ninja Gaiden Ragebound and Shinobi. But who knows, maybe an update will come?

Q. Are you happy with the Switch 2 so far?
A. Yes and No. It does its job but that's that.

Reasons;
- DKB is good but doesn't feel revolutionary like Mario odyssey.
- Don't understand the hype for ANY 3rd party games on S2. Cyberpunk and Elden Ring and what not can be bought for cheap and played on with most PC and handheld.
- MKW is great but isn't that different from MK8 imo, and the open world is just completely empty.
- It plays S1 games good, that's great but expected.
- I like the bigger screen. People say it's of worse quality than even the S1 screen but I don't really feel it.
- Botw and Totk I have already played. No amount of gaslighting is going to change my mind on it. Yes they are good games, yes they runs and looks better. And no, they are not new experience.

The S2 doesn't shock me like the S1 probably because the world has moved on since. Now that PC handhelds are so common and popular the Switch is no longer as unique as it was in 2017. Back then playing the Switcher 3, a big open world game on handheld, was a big thing. Now it's just common. And I am NOT paying the Nintendo tax for any old 3rd party games sorry.

I bought the S2 because my children broke the OG Switch. I guess it fullfilled its purpose, but that's that.

I've actually been quite surprised by how much I've enjoyed my Switch 2. I've put a ton of time into MK World, DK Bananza, and Kirby & the Forgotten Land + Star-Crossed World. Will be picking up Borderlands 4 so my wife can play with me while I play on my PC. Not to mention Metroid, Pokemon, and then whatever comes next.

It's been pretty awesome tbh

No. Nintendo is sleeping at the wheel and there's no excuse to leave August and September this dry from first party.
In 3 months of consoles they released two system sellers, updated the performance of about 15 games, released two DLC, released two smaller games and have 4 more exclusives confirmed for this year. And I'm just talking about publisher Nintendo.

I wish it had more new first party games. I haven't really used it much since Donkey Kong. I'll play Kirby Air Riders.

The one thing I really want is for Bloober to remake/remaster Eternal Darkness for Switch 2. It might take 5 or 7 years but if it happens, I'll be satisfied with it.

3 months after launch, pre-holiday is certainly not a time to be judging the console. With that said, I personally have not been a huge fan - but I've also not played DK Bananza and was extremely disappointed with Mario Kart World, and have no interest in game key cards (plus most of the ports since I've played or own them on other platforms). So to me, Switch 2 is simply the Switch Pro.

I like the Gamecube Classics app, the enhancements to the other Classics apps, all of the NSW2 edition upgrades for existing games, etc. I think what will really help is the next Direct that will actually focus on the holiday season and early next year. I'm really looking forward to Metroid Prime 4 and whatever Fire Emblem they have in the hopper.

Mario Kart is a huge disappointment, Donkey Kong is a timeless classic and a true gem. Switch 1 upgraded games are generally amazing.

So.. Not exactly a must-buy but I'm quite happy. It's showing great potential but it's probably gonna be a while until more "real" Switch 2 games are out.

Pretty good first 3 months IMO. If Hyrule Warriors, Kirby Air Riders and MP4 all drop by the end of the year and are all at least 8/10 level games, I would say that's a very solid first 6 months when it comes to first party output.

It hasn't all been great though. While the third party support seems to be slowly ramping up, there should be more than there is at this point in time. To me it seems like Nintendo is trying to overly curate the first 6 months of the consoles lifespan. People keep referencing the DF comments about dev kits, but for some reason Hello Games obviously got kits early, Team Cherry, Bloober Team, and a few other indies in addition to bigger devs/publishers like Namco/Bandai, CDPR, EA, Activision, egc. The dev kit hardware itself shouldn't be in low supply - we're talking about the platform that just set the record for most sales at launch. I would be curious as to which devs the DF guys specifically talked to.

The amount of rage baiting and fear mongering has been interesting to watch. There's been significantly more for this platform than there was for the Wii U over a similar timeline when the writing was on the wall for the Wii U almost immediately. At the same time there's been plenty of Nintendo shills acting like everything has been perfect so far. There's a handful of YT channels that I had to stop watching because they either fell into the "S2 is doomed!" or "S2 is perfect!" categories without offering any kind of actual analysis and just rant for 10-30 minutes. I don't have time for that shit.

Every semi-relevant game needs to be updated from its Switch 1 version. For docked use I'm more than satisfied of the upgrade, but the screen is really not good and all the stuff made to be displayed on the S1's 720p screen really suffers in motion.

Power is a tad disappointing on last generation games (barely a PS4 +), and a blast on current generation games (a real Series S lite). I'm really excited for what's coming up on the third party front.

Build quality is great, and the screen doesn't bother me (vrr is awesome). I also love the joycons (split pad with gyro is my jam and the mouse is a nice addition).

Battery life sucks, but I guess there had to be compromises at that price point.

As for the first party output, I'm a bit disappointed by Mario Kart and the rest of the lineup isn't really for me in 2025 except for Metroid. But then, they also released Donkey Kong which is one of my favorite game of the last decade, so overall, I'm still quite happy.

I'd give this early switch 2 a solid 7.5/10, which is very good.

Switch 1 was an 8/10 at that point but benefited from the novelty of being an hybrid, so same ballpark.

Literally waiting for Metroid at this point. Pre ordered but got caught up in the bullshit FOMO. Haven't played it past the first month or so. Shouldn't have bought it to be honest. Better running switch 1 games really isn't worth it.

They REALLY have to work on the system updates. Some things are utterly stupid. Not being able to turn off system sounds, is the most annoying thing ever. Also the auto-play (BUG) in the eShop makes it unusable when scrolling the shop. You don't even know what title you're on, and that horrendous Switch "CLICK" sound is just low capacity managing.

Greatest console ever made. It perfected an already stellar console and made it ten times better, stronger and more flexible. Killer apps like Donkey Kong Bananza is already released and soon we will get Metroid Prime 4 and other first party bangers. Third party support will be even better than on Switch because of the extra power and modern feature set, which will help the ports not being as compromised and more in line with the current gen consoles. Switch 2 also has an amazing BC transforming literally my entire Switch library to look and play better. I don't agree on the criticism on the screen. It's a great screen, displaying vibrant colors that pop. I don't miss OLED one bit. Battery life is also terrific, way better than on the original launch Switch.
