System Shock 2: Impressions and Opinions?

It installed fine, but when it boots up & i click new game or options, it crashes to a black screen, even with the patch file!
#1 Did you do that thingie I posted earlier about hyper threaded CPU's?

#2 There is some texture management problem. I forget how I fixed it, just that it needed fixing. Use that link to the XP Compatibility forum I posted.

That should be enough. I wouldn't want you to have to settle for Undying.

I tried it all, to no avail! Woe is me!

Maybe it will run on my laptop!

PM Dark10x and I'll yell at him about it in the morning. He was sure his system was good for it when I hauled my shit up to his house for coop, but then he had to spend about a half hour re-fixing it. He'll prolly have some more ideas.

I remember my friend playing this game in college. He would stay up really fucking late and litterally scream in the middle of the night waking up all of my roomates. I never got interested into the game because I thought he was a little fucking tard for waking us up over a "creepy" video game.

After looking into it a little bit today I realize that maybe it really was a scary game. I keep reading some pretty amazing reviews about it. I wouldn't mind playing it one of these days...

Try loading the Indeo video codec. It's probably crashing when loading the first cutscene. Check the CD, or google. MS stopped including the codec with windows after 98.

You would be doing yourself a favor by playing System Shock 2.

SS1 was the best PC game ever, possibly, until HL1 was released.. Thing is, like all good things, it was underappretiated and went largely undetected by the masses :( I believe its release had coincided with one of the Doom releases or something, which really hurt it bad. No?

Damn right. Don't tell me a trained soldier can't fire a pistol without the sufficient 'cyber modules'! Give me my cool software and hardware upgrades and give me some cyberspace. :) Don't know if Doom hurt its sales or not, the game was just ahead of its time. Did a lot of things that Doom didn't btw like ducking and looking up and down.

I only played that game for about 2h or so, i was playing with headphones and the sounds just creeped me out too much.

I always only played it after dark with headphone son.. It was uber-creepy. No game ever creeped me out this much.

We are.. we are.. we are..

Where can I get this game? How old is it?

Cause I've been looking for it for awhile now and I can't find it anywhere.

I just dug out my box from under a pile of crap and it says Copyright 1999.. Here's a photo of the cover to make it easier to recognize in case you see it. It should be a rarity these days, it's from the times when games used to ship in big neat cardboard boxes with lots of goodies.. eBay is your friend for this kind of thing. SS2 is one of those games I'd NEVER sell though.. I got it with Homeworld that summer and played them for so many hours that I am totally bonded to them.

EDIT: It also says on the box Windows 95/98 - Is it confirmed to run perfectly fine on Windows XP?

Shit no! There's ample information at the start of this thread, courtesy of me, to get you through the common problems.

Also, don't forget to disable the safe texture manager by editing the cfg file.

There are a few problems that might come up trying to install and play SS2, but there are ways around pretty much every issue.

Two extremely useful threads for SS2 technical issues and and info on getting it running smoothly on XP, plus links to the patch and the model/high res textures mods:

SS2 still has a great community, thankfully.

edit: Whoops, didn't notice that ArcadeStickMonk already linked to the same thread ages ago. :lol

Oh man, SS2 is one of my favorites of all-time and I didn't even know about the upgrades/mods! Thank all of you guys for this thread--I'll be booting this one up again soon....

System Shock 2 is probably in my top five when it comes to PC games, it's just great and I thnink everyone should play it. It's a shame that it's so hard to find, it's a bit ridiculous that it's more rare than Radiant Silvergun or whatever. Thankfully it's not as expensive. Personally I never had any problems running SS2 under XP, not a single issue. Though I haven't tried it on my new system but this seems like a good time to test if it works.

Oh, and I too am looking forward to Bioshock.

Edit: Well I just installed it and it seems to be running just fine so far (I've played until the first upgrade station) so I assume it'll keep working. Anyway, it just strange that some people have issues with it under XP and I've never had any problems... though I'm not complaining.
