System Shock: Remake |OT| The ChatGPT Revolution

Picked it up on PS5. Pure gaming bliss for me. Crazy to see so little traction on the official thread!
As a bioshock mega fan I feel great shame having not played this yet. Been on my wish list for so long but my backlog is just silly.

It's 40% off right now (only 20 dollar bucks) and regularly on sale so I have no excuse but I've just started dead space remake.

I use https://shodan.io for work regularly and I love this site and the fact they took the name from this game is even better 😎

Is this like Prey and/or Bioshock? That's what it looks like to me.

I've almost bought it several times, between PS5 and Steam.
Looking Glass Studios created the immersive sim genre with Ultima Underworld and System Shock way back in the day. Prey 2017 and Bioshock are both descended from those LGS System Shock blueprints. Bioshock was streamlined/neutered for mainstream audiences, but Prey was a true successor.

Be prepared for a hardcore game that doesn't hold your hand, but it's definitely doable.

Ok thanks. Prey is one of my favorite games in general. Would Prey/Deus Ex be more fitting?
Prey, but only vaguely. SS Remake is hardcore man. A game from another time. There is literally no hand holding whatsoever. No questlog of any kind. You have to explore and listen to the audio logs to even learn what you have to do… Prepare the guides for the first playthrough. There is no shame in it.

And enjoy this gem. God know when and if we'll ever see something like this again.

System Shock 2 Remastered is coming!

Oh, and some small tipps:

- Vaporize as much as possible. You will need the money for the upgrades.
- Quick-Save A LOT.
- Save the good weapons for the end. You gonna need em!!
- There are environmental suits that help with the radiation (find em first, don't run around without and die 100 times like I did; you can come by but it's frustrating).

And unless you love backtracking, write down the screen number in the rooms where you destroy the CPU nodes. :messenger_winking_tongue:

This games sounds like Stalker games, where quick save is your best friend.

Ive waited so long ever since the kickstarter that I dont care anymore. Played it for 5 minutes lol

Game is so good. Just destroyed the mining laser, around 7 hours in (being meticulous). Only 14% of players on PS5 have done it, per the trophy stat. It's pretty straightforward and you are given clear instructions in audio logs, so that's a bit surprising. Guess the average gamer can't handle System Shock.

Most players probably activated it without following instructions, then thought they beat the game. (I did activated it by mistake)

Finished. Total classic experience in every sense of the word. An outstanding remake of a game I always wanted to play. Nice challenge but not too frustrating.

Man, I can't believe I didn't play this sooner, such a brilliant game.

Didn't play the original, didn't even began to game at that time, but it feels like a faithful remake.
It gives me very much ''Prey'' vibes, from music, aesthetic, etc. and it really bums me we haven't got a sequel to Prey or something alike

The complete lack of handholding is amazing and it really shows how much some games today just treat you like an idiot.

The only problem I'm finding with game after 20 hrs is that the storage is too small. There are a ton of items, especially if you're thorough and the back and forth to where you've dropped stuff is getting a bit annoying.

Haven't finished it yet but I've been enjoying that you actually have to figure things out instead of all this hand holding. The atmosphere is good and a bit creepy.

Inventory space gets to be slightly annoying but not a deal breaker. This game has a great classic feel while still having a good presentation overall and has reminded me how shit modern games are. Deserves more love

I was shocked (hur hur) when I finished the game because I couldn't believe the mechanics of the game were done back in 1994 in a time where barely a year before you had the first DOOM released.

I had to go watch some old OG playthroughs to compare certain parts and I was blown away. Warren Spector was mental, way ahead of his time for that game. Basically the foundation of immersive sims.

I have a steelbook PC copy from the kickstarter. In fact I backed it so early that it was dev rebooted twice after I paid.

Laughed my ass off when I had an email with key for the game I forgot about.

Same again when few weeks later the steelbook arrived in the mail.

Anyway was great on PC, didn't realize there was a PS5 release. May do it for the trophies but I dread to think what the controls are like on a joypad.

It's a shame seeing reviews with point like "Severe lack of clarity on objectives and story". I mean, really? Compass, Map, showing items on the map, audio logs, notes (which btw, neither have too many words).

Maybe, maybe a game like this needs an obscure objective, a hint, I'm so sick of gaming caving to these pretentious and entitled people with press X to win and no death option that is beyond easy.

This is how we ended up with tons of quest markers.

On a side note, try playing new Indiana Jones with objective markers off. Its maps are small enough, playable that way. Feels similar to how I felt in this game.

Yeah, one of the big reasons.

One one hand I like that games started letting you disable all kinds of helpers, but on the other, you know, on default/normal the options are there so I might leave them on or not or half.

As to me every game on the normal difficulty is how the game is designed and so are all the markers. And ok, you disable all markers, but the game is built with all most of that in mind and so you don't have context clues or environmental hints.
It's also the same with higher difficulty options, let's just increase enemy damage to player and decrease player damage to the enemy and that's that, it's a bit shallow and artificial.

Thats the thing. I think its made to be played without markers. Then devs gave an option to use them for those that need it.

For instance, one of the largest map in game, its a smattering of islands, big and small. With markers on, it can be showing objective in front of you, while actually it can be on island behind. I know a lot of players that like to follow markers had a bad time in that level.

I played without and stumbled upon most side quests and their solutions by just normal exploration. Exploration is pretty rewarding that way.

Did took me pretty long to finish though. Almost 50 hrs.

The game plays decent on the controller. They should add some aim assist though. This is especially annoying early in the game when you don't have a lot of ammo yet.

Well, that's good to hear, I wasn't invest at all in the Indy game, but I saw that it's by the Wolfenstein guys, I liked those games, so I might give this a try.

Even so, I just wish devs, companies had more balls and just stick to their vision, you like the game, fine, it's too hard, maybe not for you, move on, etc.
Not saying they should return to hardcore 90s games, but not what it's today. Just like the new Doom game with all the sliders, I hate sliders with a passion, especially the story difficulty option and no death, Jesus, might as well just watch the cutscenes on YT.

This lame trend that everyone should be able to play every game out there, IMO it just defeats the purpose of different genres and visions.
