February 3, 2005 - Early this week publisher and developer Sammy Studios laid off approximately 50-60 people from its sales and marketing staff and plans to refocus the Carlsbad, Ca-based studio solely on development, IGN confirmed with Sammy representatives today. The two games in development at the studio, Darkwatch and Iron Phoenix, will remain mostly unaffected.

The staff cut, however, may be part of a larger movement within Sega Sammy. With its focus squarely on development, Sammy Studios is now purely a development house, which needs a publisher for its pair of nearly finished titles. Sega and Take-Two are the most likely candidates to assist in the sales and distribution of those games.

On a larger and more speculative scale, two sources close to the company told IGN that Take-Two Interactive, which is rapidly acquiring studios and franchises as it positions itself for the next generation, is positioning itself to buy Sega from Sammy. A Sammy representative denied this statement as rumor and conjecture.

breaking news ........ Cell Processor to buy Sega!

The Almighty Cell Chip, looking to shore up its videogame development resources, has announced that it will buy Sega from Sammy.

when questioned about the buyout of the struggling Japanese videogame giant, Cell replied:
"we'll whip those lazy slacking fuckers into shape before you can Shenmue III."

Not happening, especially not after everything Sammy went through to tie up the Sega deal. Sammy killed their US publishing arm because that's (partially) what they bought Sega for.... this isn't rocket science here. Sega *is* Sammy now, they're just cutting redundant sectors.

I'm sure T2 would like to buy Sega though. Especially after the deal they got on VC/Kush. I just don't see them getting the chance now, they needed to speak up a year or two ago.

Why would they buy them when they could just sign a 10 year publishing agreement with them and be the part of the business that Sega just laid off. All this 'acquisition' foolishness is unnecessary - particularly in this case.

This is honestly one of the most confusing paragraphs I've ever read:

So SAMMY merges with SEGA to become SEGA SAMMY. And now they're looking for a publisher and SEGA is one of the leading candidates? WHAT?

Wow, shit. Take-2 is putting their fists up, they're poised to beat EA down shitless. Go Take-Two!

Come now. Take Two is dumb money, but they're not THAT dumb.

Their "inside sources" probably meant that Take Two is considering picking up the remaining Sega/Sammy US studios that are having the layoffs.

Take Two + SEGA = good rival to EA. ANYTHING TO CRUSH EA!

rofl

Take Two + SEGA = Take Two + a crappy company

they still want to make money, but with sega on board they wont. nobody cares today about sega, they are only a shadow of th past.

take 2 can take on EA all they want, bottom line is EA will still stomp them at the end of the day... unless take 2 wants to release 3 GTA games a year

I think TTWO buying/publishing Sega would be the best thing to happen to them. They have very good management, marketing and distribution, and with the right amount of budget SEGA is probably more than capable of creating great games. Just SEGA creating 3-4 AAA titles would put them back on top of fanboy lists.

sega made many great games when they were a first party... i don't know what's happened since (have they lost lots of talent? or are they just skimping on their budgets?).. i know they have many franchises that could easily be huge successes again if a few great games where released.

they could revive golden axe and make a killer action series. they could retool shinobi and turn it into a great series again. sonic obviously has the potential to be huge. single player traditional phantasy star would be awesome... sega is potentially a goldmine if they still have the desire and the talent to make AAA games.

woulda coulda shoulda with sega. their franchises HAVE potential, but that is all it is today. there was POTENTIAL for a "virtua fighter RPG", look what happened. there was POTENTIAL for a 3D "next gen" astro boy. look what happened. you can't live off potential forever. one of these days sega is going to have to make a great game again, or else... shit i can't even end that sentence! or else what!? they are going to be in debt? they are going to be a shitty 3rd party developer? they are going to be a joke? check check check already. perhaps "or else they are going to approach acclaim level"

Just buy AM2, get the VF guys and they'll have the big time fighter that their library is lacking. Plus, they could probably them out from under Sega Sammy's noses along with a few choice franchises that they could try resurecting.

Wow what a gain for them that would be...wait :lol

I just want Sega to fund AM2 for Shenmue 3,then they can go fuck themselves like they have told me to do over the years of being a Sega fan :P

Sega Sammy made stupid money this year... I don't see this being true

This is bad thinking. EA is bad because it's big and threatens many small developers. If Take Two "crushed" EA, it would be just as bad.

If Take Two wants to take on EA, they need to change their name. Take Two is a stupid name.

I agree...it's sound like a cheap generic brand name who's games you expect to buy for only $10. Incidentally, wasn't it T2 who released the very first $10 game for the PSX? Some piece of shit Rainbow Six wannabe...it was so painfully bad. Anyways, Take-Two should refer to themselves strictly as T2 -- it's got a ring to it.

Yeah, I didn't understand that either. I mean coupled with the fact that Sega just sold off their primary development studio in the US, I can't imagine one of the higher ups (presumably from the Sammy side) couldn't put 2 and 2 together.

It would be impossible for either Take-Two,EA or even Nintendo to purchase, and thats simpily because SEGA's market cap way beyond $1.5 billion now under SEGA-Sammy. Even though they wasn't bought out by Sammy corp, thier market cap of $1.5 billion would make a bid impossible unless either three want to go broke over night(in the case of EA and Take-Two) or have thier financials hurt.

The only two video game participants that are able to buy SEGA without finanical risk,is either Sony Corp or MicroSoft.

The only way this is happening is if Sammy is selling Sega... Take 2 can not buy out Sammy... One of the only time you see Japanese people queue up for something is at 9 am in front of Pachinko joints :lol

Well let's be honest, if you're talking about buying Sega, you're guaranteed to be taking on financial risk ;).

Though really, as of their last quarters, Nintendo had more cash on hand than Sony (around $7.5 billion vs. $5.5 billion). Sega and Sammy have a combined market cap of about $2.4 billion.

Even EA had about $2.5 billion, so theoretically they could also come up with something, though that's assuming an all cash deal, which is not the way it would be done anyway. And since EA has a market cap around $20 billion, they could come up with with some sort of combination of cash and stock to pay for the deal.

So it's not so much "impossible" for them in terms of being able to pay for it, it's just "impossible" in the sense that I don't think they're crazy enough to spend that much getting Sega (at least not the Sega we have these days).

Please God no... the only thing worse than a shitty Japanese company owning Sega is a shitty US company owning Sega. :p
