So, who do you think will win this year's election?

Going purely off my gut instincts (other members are welcome to post graphs and piecharts and long newstory quotes), I think American's will come to their senses and give Kerry a win... albeit one with a small and tenuous margin.

But right now, the odds are still stacked in Bush's favour, so bets are $1 to $1.10, Kerry to Bush.

This early in the game I'm not willing to predict but, I think the uptic in voter registration clearly benifits the Democratic party. Those more closely aligned with the Democratic party are less likely to vote.

Clearly Bush will come into this next debate with a more advantage because this format benifits him a bit more.

Bush may be good with people, but he is not good at ad lib.

if kerry wins by a slim margin, then as futami says, it's time to take up arms. as the republicans will know no bounds in getting their way.

Tough as the rhetoric is, there is one thing more powerful in Washington than partisan politics, and that's sheer momentum of tradition of succession from administration to administration and congress to congress.

Personally, I think a lot of the high-profile players in the GOP like being out of presidental power, at least for a little while. I mean, look at the fun they had piling onto Clinton all throughout the 1990s. It sells books, makes for better talk radio, and keeps the spotlight off people like Tom Delay.

Agreed, the reason that Bush has been taking it as hard as he has on the chin is becasue the GOP controls the policy in both the legislative and executive branches. So when things go wrong there is no Democratic bogey man to blame.

I think Bush will win by cheating. That is of course how he won in 2000...with that said, I'm still going to the polls and voting for Kerry.

I'm guessing Bush will win. I don't think there are enough undecided's who a) have registered, b) are going to actually vote for the debates to matter, and the debates certainly aren't going to make anyone swap sides.

It is crucial for Kerry to have two more good debates in order for him to take this election. Looking at his opponent, I don't think that'll be too much of a problem.

Bush will win. He'll do well in this 2nd debate. It's town hall so he can talk to regular people plus he has the low expectations working in his favor now. After he wins in 2nd debate he'll probably win in the 3rd and pull ahead of Kerry in the polls and not look back.

If they don't, what would? EVERYTHING causes fluctuations in the polls.

A) In the dealings that eventually led to these debates, the Bush-Cheney campaign didn't want the town hall debate.
B) In 2000's town hall debate he made a number of misstatements, like "I'm not so sure 80% of the people get the death tax. I know this, 100% will get it if I'm the president." Hitokage put it best above: "Bush may be good with people, but he is not good at ad lib."

Bush will win and it won't be as close as many think. I predict he will get about 320-330 electoral votes.

Florida, Ohio, and Pen. will go to Bush and it will be over after that.

It looks like he will gain Wisconsin, New Mexico and Iowa also.

I don't see Kerry winning any red states from 2000 execpt maybe New Hampshire.

Kerry will win, but Gore won was well. Betting on this is just like betting on boxing, the judges are crooked.

Are people of your ilk ever going to stop whining about the 2000 presidential race? It really is quite pathetic.

I'd put money on Bush winning. I don't want him to win, but would you bet against the Mike Jordan of presidents? I mean, this guy just can't lose. :( PEACE.

No, actually pathetic is losing an election and having family friends (Kate Harris, daddy's Supreme Court cronies, etc) help to install you as president. Criticizing the breakdown of democracy in this country isn't "whining."

Anyway, Kerry will win and it'll be by a large electoral margin. Unless, of course, this administration decides to blow something up the day before the election. Surprise!

albeit one with a small and tenuous margin.

That's what I'm afraid of....

I too think it could very well be close, it all depends on the media. If the media decides to brainwash the public again as the election approaches, this could very well be. Kerry would probably win, but diebold would make sure Bush got the presidency.

Bush- the power of the Dark side is too strong.

Yeah, sadly, it seems to be.

Geez, I don't know. I'd have to look at polling data from October 2000 to see where Gore stood next to Bush. I REALLY want Kerry to win; seeing Bush again would be a shame.

What's pathetic is the state of the voting system in this country.

I honestly think it’s going to be Kerry. After all, all he has to do right now to win is turn Michigan from a tie into a Blue state, and who honestly thinks Kerry won’t win Michigan?

Well, it's not like he can just get ahead in Michigan and glide on. If that were the case Bush would've hit the Freeze button a month or two ago.

You know, the better question is this:

When will we know who won? 'Cause you just know there are going to be complications, fabricated and real, that prevent a winner from being announced right away.

I think the polls belie what I anticipate to be a profound loss for bush and the architects of the agenda his administration has prosecuted. Right now, trends in key "swing states" show Kerry's hold to be strengthening, with Bush's appeal waning considerably. As the debacle in Iraq worsens, compounded by increasing worries over our economy, I can't see how Bush can win without employing the same deceitful tactics we observed in 2000. I believe democracy will be vindicated on nov 3.

It's going to be a tie.

Kerry takes FL. Bush takes NV, IA, and MN or WI.
Or
Bush takes FL. Kerry takes NM and IA.

The House elects Bush and the Senate elects Edwards.;)

if conservatives had responded to Moore sooner with their films, word might have spread enough to cast doubt on his assertions, but after seeing the reaction of some people (including a good friend of mine), Moore really seems to have scared some more gullible people to Kerry's side. I'm sure even Kerry disagrees with most of his assertions and accusations, but he's not going to criticize a film that's meant to get him elected...

Because of that, I think there are people that the polls aren't reaching that could help Kerry pull it off...
