Talking Heads - "This must be the place" for appreciation.

True Story: First concert I ever went to was Talking Heads Remain in Light Tour. My older brother took me.

They were AWESOME. 19-fucking-80? That was 32 years ago! Fuck. Well, it was probably 1981.

But still . . . that was before most of you were born. Put me on an ice floe and push it out to sea.

Edit: Damn . . . it was 1980. Northrup Auditorium, U of Minnesota.

Nothing else even comes close to sounding like them, which is why I love listening to so many of their albums. I understand how some may not like them, but in my mind, they just don't get it.

Also, not single one person out or anything, but fucking David Byrne is a genius.

I'd like to suggest Road to Nowhere as an essential?

I have this wierd thing for bittersweet songs like this, peppy tempo married to harsh life lesson lyrics. They give hope somehow, and TH has them in droves.

ROME.

I mostly like the album versions of their songs, especially Fear of Music and Remain in Light, but their live performances are full of gems. Like this one.

Oh hell fucking yeah.

It's about time NeoGAF had a Talking Heads thread. If there was ever a GAF television show, and it needed a house band, Talking Heads would be it. Speaking of Television, that's another great band everyone should check out.

Nothing But Flowers is the greatest song ever.

One of my all-time favorite bands. I pick More songs about buildings and food for best album.

I can never get enough of Stop Making Sense. My mind was completely blown when I watched it for the first time.

Watched True Stories last night for the first time (yep) and quite enjoyed it. I'd love for another Byrne directed film or short.

This Must Be The Place is not only my favorite Talking Heads song, but my favorite song out of any song. It never fails to make me feel at peace with whatever is bothering me at any given moment.

This thread has made my day 1000% better. Psycho Killer remains my goto song for Rock Band singing at parties.

I have knew about Talking Heads for ages but never really gotten into them until yesterday. I heard Psycho Killer on radio while driving back from work and decided to buy the album 77. Loved pretty much every song from it and about two hours later I bought rest of their albums from Itunes, such an awesome band!

I do have one question, was David Byrne really like he is in this Letterman interview or was it a character? He is like that pretty much in all his interviews from the 70s/80s but in his latest interviews he really doesn't seem like the same person. Is it the decades of dealing with interviewrs or was Talking Heads Byrnes a character?

Born Under Punches is probably my all time favorite (and most listened to) song of all time.

Remain in Light is a perfect album to fill time with. Each song is perfect on their own without context to the album, but once I hear one of them, I go back and listen to the album.

This is probably the one band I give my Band Circlejerk Thread Seal of Approval™
I would be 100% in favor of a David Bowie thread like this one

I think he's come out of his shell since those interviews, but the guy has some quirks...definitely.

It's about damn time there was one of these threads I could get behind.

No (Nothing But) Flowers?

Great song, it's technically in the thread now ;)

Thought this was about the Alan Bennett teleplays. This is an acceptable alternative.

I'm gunna look into those now.

What's with the movies being inspired by the song names? The directors are just fans?

Byrne produced "This Must Be The Place" I believe and I think the second one is just an homage or coincidence haha, not sure.

A Bowie one would be good... Although I don't know if I'm the right man for the job.

The Name of This Band... is one of the best live albums of all time. if not the best. It's amazing to listen to it all the way through and hear the progression from tiny club to arenas

I plagiarized the following line from the title song to my gf on Valentine's Day:

Out of all those kinds of people
You got a face with a view

I'm starting to believe wenis has the best musical taste on GAF....closely followed by Buckethead.

Spent months searching record shops, garage sales and estate sales. I go to the record shop near my place on a whim on my way to the library and stumble on my absolute favorite record of theirs for five bucks...

I could have just ebay'd or gone on discogs for it, but that feeling of finally finding it can't be matched. Today is an awesome day.

Fuck, that thing is gonna get you laid. Guaranteed.

Then it'll be the best five bucks EVER spent.

but yeah, Naive Melody is one of those tracks that women can't but fall in love with whoever is in the room with them at the time. That and Slippery People

Unbelievable pick-up, man. I'm fucking jealous.

I had a dream a couple of days ago that me and David Byrne hung out in a Sears store furniture section for some reason. It was great, and at one point in the dream I think I considered, "Could this be the best day of my life?"

That said, I got into the Talking Heads about a year ago or so, and have to say I like their first four albums (the only ones I have) almost equally. I feel that I need to buy Speaking in Tongues ASAP. I've been obsessively listening to "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" of late, though. "America is Waiting" has been stuck in my head every single day for the past week and a half or so.

I got that as well from a local record store that is now closed, the owner gave us a good deal on it.

Placing "Fear of" before the title of each track on Fear of Music makes too much sense. How did I not see this before?!

Really? The whole album is about paranoid delusions haha.

I never put two and two together. I'm really surprised it was never mentioned in the Fear of Music 33 1/3 book. I may have to re-read that to make sure.

If you go to see David Byrne perform today, does he ever do Talking Heads songs? Or just stuff from his solo career?

When he went on tour with St. Vincent as both Duo & Solo performers, they switched between both of their own personal libraries and songs from their recent album. I hear that during Naive Melody St. Vincent comes out.

I missed my chance to see this show :(

I was a big Talking Heads fan in college. If you stayed at just about any party in the mid-80's long enough you were sure to hear Stop Making Sense. When "Naked" came out I bought it right away and played it in my truck as I drove away from the record store. WTF?! This shit is totally different, this isn't Talking Heads! What the hell!

Now it's one of my favorite albums.

I've also managed to scrounge a shitload of bootlegs. A few of my favorites (that have really good sound quality for boots) are

1977-12-03 The Old Waldorf, San Francisco, CA

1978-09-16 The Boarding House

1982-07-04 Rock Werchter

The 1980 Rome show is also fantastic, but you're as well off watching on YT. The audio of the show that's in circulation among collectors isn't that great.

And if you like Talking Heads, you should also check out the solo work Byrne was releasing at the same time - "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" (w. Brian Eno) and "The Catherine Wheel" are both excellent.

Some other bootlegs I really liked were the CBS Demo Session, Live on KSAN Radio, and at the Heatwave Festival.

8 months later, I finally find it in a store.

It was like being reunited with an old friend when I saw it in the new arrival bin.

I can remember three AMAZING things my dad gave me when I was 5 years old.. my first Boom Box, Ghost in the Machine (The Police), and this random mix tape with Once in a Lifetime, being the first song. I became an instant fan. Till this day its on my bike ride rotation. Tends to tear me up..to be honest. Miss you, pops..

Is Little Creatures not as appreciated among fans?

Because I kinda grew up on it, and love pretty much every song.

An amazing pop album.
