Ted Williams, "Homeless Man with Golden Voice," a year later... Damn, son

Oh, this guy. I had forgotten him. Great to see he's doing well. Thanks for posting this update here.

Sorry, but when I hear him praising god for all his success, I can't help but think of this:

Good for him though. Its nice to see a celebrity not fall down the shitter from drugs for once.

I never made any statement suggesting that. You clearly missed something in that exchange.

The system that allowed him to become poor and miserable is American, just as the system that allowed him to become rich and famous is American.

Neither outcome is exclusive to the American system - but diffusing one side of it (the make him poor side) through the statement that it's not exclusive to Americans creates the subtext that rags to riches is an American thing.

Of course it's obviously untrue upon cursory examination - but the necessity of making that statement is about as necessary as the statement you made. Actually more so; given that it was made in the context of a follow up or reply to your statement.

"We here at ET are humble enough to say WE FUCKING DID IT!! WOOOOHOOOO! MAN, WE ARE AWESOME!"

Great to hear Ted's doing good, though. I remember he was having trouble staying on the straight and narrow over the summer, but it seems like he's through the hardest part and has a good support group now.

This is great. I heard he stumbled a while back, and was not looking forward to reading through this thread. He did great though.

If his faith in God helped him get through rehab and stay sober, is God (real or not) not a part of why he is now sober?

Good to hear. I was actually just wondering how his story turned out a few days ago; the last update I'd heard he relapsed and was in therapy again. The piece mentioned it took a couple shots at sobriety before he made it. Glad he did.

Warm fuzzy success story.

Before we praise America we should also recognize that the conditions which allowed him to become homeless in the first place (and hundreds of thousands others) were created in the same country. Glad he was able to leave that situation, though.

Not only are you implying something wrong (that the american economy is the sole cause of homelessness), you're also kind of a dick for trying to politicize this.

More interested in Ted Williams two years later. He's still vulnerable to relapse. Awesome that he's doing so well right now, though.

I was worried that internet fame would screw him up more-- like he would get all this random hope and support, then succumb to the pressure, but this is really great.

Thank goodness I've been reading NeoGAF today. Otherwise I wouldn't have known that we shouldn't praise America when a guy rises out of the gutter, that American's in general are terribly uptight about nudity because one guy has a problem with old dudes in the locker room, that Americans have a problem with smoking and obesity (which we apparently completely ignore) and that Americans only like Tim Tebow because they are religious zealots.

I'm sure I could have learned a lot more today, but I pretty much got stuck in WrassleGAF most of the evening.

A lot of people replied to that post, but I don't see the problem since the OP got things started with "America! Fuck Yeah!". Seems like a strange thing to be nationalistic about, considering.

It's amazing how youtube can change a life. The simple act of uploading a video changes this mans life. The person who filmed him and uploaded it should feel quite special, imo.

He did relapse, he was on Dr Phil, and Dr Phil helped him. Organised a proper rehabilitation environment and system for him.

His substance abuse problems is what allowed him to be poor and miserable. If you don't want to be homeless in America, there are plenty of ways to get yourself out of that situation.

Weird as hell seeing him. I take that exit all the time. I probably rolled by him a few times and never knew..

Back when he was still homeless, I've been through that exit so many times. I've talked to him a lot, and gave him money. It of course probably fed his addiction, but I just loved his personality. I'm so glad he's on the up and up and healthy - not to mention a girlfriend and a nice home

Seriously though, good for him. Love the man.

Really great to see he's not only doing well but Baaallliiinnn'!

ET should be ashamed of them selves for the self jerking they did near the end of the video though. That was seriously pathetic....

A sad story at this point.

Hard not to feel a bit cynical about America; others were based pre-bump for anything negative in this thread but it's disturbing how the entire country "cared" because of something as vacuuous as how someone's voice sounds... Yet in general honelessness is way down people's lists of things they actively care to do anything about.
