A West Virginia teen arrested and accused of nearly inciting a riot after a confrontation with a teacher over his National Rifle Association t-shirt has inspired dozens of students across his county to wear similar apparel in solidarity.

Jared Marcum, 14, had a confrontation Thursday with a Logan Middle School teacher over his NRA t-shirt, which bears the organization's logo, along with an image of a hunting rifle and the phrase, "Protect your right."

Marcum's lawyer, Ben White, said that when the teen was told to remove the shirt or turn it inside out, he attempted to engage the teacher in a debate.

White said that Marcum had been wearing the shirt without causing any problems from homeroom at the beginning of the school day through fifth period, and was confronted by one of the school's teachers while getting his lunch. When Jared refused to remove or reverse the shirt, the teacher began to raise his voice, and it caught the attention of students eating their lunch, White said.

Marcum was eventually arrested and taken away by police after refusing to remove the shirt. White said that when police told the teen they were going to arrest him, he stuck his hands out and said, "Fine."

Logan City Police Chief E.K. Harper told ABCNews.com that Marcum was not arrested for wearing a t-shirt, but for "disrupting the school process."

Marcum was not put in jail, Harper said, and was released to his mother after less than 30 minutes at the police station -- normal procedure for a juvenile arrest.

White said that charges being filed against Marcum are pending the prosecutor's office's review of the evidence. But he insisted that it was the teacher who caused the issue by confronting the teen, and that video gathered from the school will prove it.

On top of his arrest and trip to the police station, Marcum was suspended from school for one day. This morning, he returned to school wearing the same t-shirt, White said.

White accompanied Marcum and his stepfather to a meeting at the school, where the principal, according to White, said that she "hates that it happened" to Marcum.

The kid's smart, though I don't agree with what he believes in. That is, if this report is true he handled himself perfectly and that teacher was in the wrong for his behavior.

Unless of course a dress code banning such things was in place (thought that still wouldn't excuse a teacher raising his voice).

EDIT: Also, it's unfortunate that the shirt had a hunting rifle on it, since no lawmaker was ever talking about banning hunting rifles, nor would any lawmaker or the American public likely support such an act. So maybe the kid's not so smart in that sense.

Look, I have great respect for teachers. I actually feel they don't get paid enough for the job they do, but unless rules change, you can't just abuse your authority or overstep it.

Things like this is why I believe in school uniforms. You wouldn't wear an NRA shirt to any workplace or job, why is school different? Schools in India and China still allow corporal punishment, majority have uniforms and they teach manners and other things. There is a reason they come here then and are far more regimented and capable to learn or work ie post secondary or a job.

Many schools have dress codes and the vast majority of them ban political shirts. A lot don't even allow graphics/text on clothing at all.

When I was in high school, my friend got in trouble for wearing a T shirt that had 'Cop Killa' on it. He was approached by an assistant principal and asked to take the shirt off since it condoned violence. I don't know if this would be similar.

Look I dislike the NRA, I feel they represent gun makers and sellers and not the average gun toting citizen, buy I'm not going to deny a students right to support them.

EDIT: on second thought, the fact there is a picture of a gun on the shirt could violate this code. You wouldn't be allowed to wear a shirt with AK-47's would you? Please disregard what I wrote above, but I'll keep it because I like good discussion.

You know what else was weird about that kid? One time, in physics class, we were forced to work on something in groups, and me and Bryce were in the same group. We needed to measure the distance between two objects on a table but we didn't have a ruler. So one of us volunteers to go and look for one, and Bryce says, "Wait." And he stretched out his thumb and forefinger in a practiced way and measured the distance using his hand. He proudly exclaimed, "It's exactly 5 inches." I say, "How do you know that?" Suddenly, Bryce became very nervous and left the room. Weird dude.

This is the first thing you learn in any high school journalism class. A student's First Amendment rights are basically surrendered by your parents to the school administrators while you are on campus.
