Teen Suspended For Asking Miss America To Prom

That. He'll have the same assigned reading and the same homework, just as if he was in regular class. On the downside, he'll miss any in-class lectures. On the upside, he'll also miss all the time that is lost by the changing of classes, students getting settled in, and students asking fairly stupid questions and requiring lengthy, redundant explanations. If he's diligent, he'll likely finish everything he needs to do while at school and won't need to do much at home, unlike the other kids. Truthfully, ISS isn't all that bad.

Not that I spent any great deal of time in it or anything....

Oh good, so he'll have all of the rote work of school without any of the social interaction or professional instruction. And if he's diligent, which most kids in ISS are, he'll have the free time to not think about school once he gets home. Sweet.

Eh, if they warned him not to do it and he directly disobeyed their authority then I understand why they'd want to punish that type of behavior. It's a little dumb and no real harm was caused, but you can't just let kids ignore you and get away without any consequences.

I once received in school suspension for a week for something I didn't do (accused of deliberately "breaking" PCs by putting a shut down script in the start up folder) and it was the biggest pile of shit ever. I was given no work to do and by the time I got to go back to classes I was ridiculously behind. On top of that since I didn't actually do the crime all it did was breed resentment for authority. I don't support the existence of it at all, especially for students who aren't disruptive in class.

Davuluri was at the school to talk with students about diversity and the importance of science, technology, engineering and math studies.

Forgive me if I'm missing the point, but why is a woman who got her fame from her looks talking about women in STEM?

This kid asked out Miss America. I don't think he's the D-student pulling fire alarms. He'll be fine.

Should have just made a YouTube video like everyone else these days.... Maybe ask a pornstar instead while he's at it....

Let me get this straight, he didn't shout expletives at her, throw feces at her, stab her, club her with a side of beef, or insult her religious beliefs, right? He just asked a silly question that probably got a few laughs?

Oh public education system, you need to chill the fuck out.

That's not the point though! Like I said, I guess he "deserves" it if he was warned and like you said I'm sure he'll be fine, my gripe is with the nature of the punishment. Take a student who is having problems and stick them in a study hall room with a gym coach for three days? You can't tell me that makes sense. That's all I was trying to point out, don't mean to derail or offend.

Davuluri is the recipient of several awards including Dean's List, Michigan Merit Award, and National Honor Society Award.[16] She initially attended Michigan State University for one year and then transferred to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.[10] While at the University of Michigan, she was a Sigma Kappa (Alpha Mu)[17][18] and a member of the Indian dance squad, Maya.[10] She graduated in 2011 from The University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA) with a B.S. in Brain, Behavior & Cognitive Science.[10][17][19]

After graduation, Davuluri moved to New York to live with her family. She then pursued a post-bac program of pre-med courses [1] at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York[10] in order to complete medical school requirements. She will apply to med school for the year beginning in Fall 2015, since she is committed to being Miss America through September 2014.[1]

One of the main points of the Miss America pageant system is for its participants to choose a cause and promote it. She herself is studying to become a doctor and has spent quite sometime educating herself about and promoting her cause at this point, so she's probably about as qualified as any young person to speak about women in STEM.

OR

Why couldn't a pretty woman promote others to go into the STEM fields? If it's a worthy enough cause, everyone should be "allowed" to support it.

Because reasons. She is now a role model of intellectual achievement for young women.

As she rightfully should be. She's quite educated and accomplished for someone her age.

Yeah that was a pretty fucking stupid thing to say lol. Hot women cant be smart and such

Well, in the typical case of a kid having problems, typically that kid is being disruptive in class. If he (or she, but usually he) is just being a slacker but otherwise bothering nobody, then nothing comes of it. If the kid is being a disruption, then ISS is certainly a better choice than leaving him in class, and it's a far better choice than sending him home.

Now, in this case, he put the administrators in a bad position, since he was told not to do it. So while everyone laughed (likely even the administration), he earned his timeout. For this kid, it will be like that time Andy Dufresne was in solitary for playing Mozart over the prison PA system. Easiest time he'll ever do.

Lol I know this kid will be fine, and I agree that when students are being disruptive they have to be separated somehow, and I agree that basically anything is better than just sending them home, but I'm still disappointed with the system of ISS. Most kids don't do any work in there, at least in my experience. I mean come on. So it just cuts the most vulnerable kids off from education even more. Not a fan.

That's awesome. I did things in high school that I knew were going to get me in trouble just for attention that were far less cool than this. He's gonna be cock of the walk for the rest of school. Hell, he'll drink on that story for the rest of his life. "Oh, yeah? I asked Miss America to the prom!"

im glad im not in school anymore
id straight up tell the school how much of a shit they are and how they need to get their head out of their own ass

Sounds like a stunt to spotlight yourself in front of the whole school, more than asking in earnest.

But hey, that's high school! I bet students will think he is cool, just as planned.

"Davuluri laughs"

I know right? Attractive women can't be smart or have anything other than their looks to offer the world.
The surprise (at least for me) is about an educated, intelligent beauty pageant contestant, not a smart beautiful woman.

As she rightfully should be. She's quite educated and accomplished for someone her age.

Miss America I think is a bad stage for an educated person to use, I dislike the whole concept of beauty pageants. I have already admitted I was wrong about her education and intelligence, but I stand by the assertion that most beauty pageant winners are not great role models for women that want to use their brains. She would be a great role model without winning Miss America, it adds nothing to her worth as a role model.

Why not have a scientist or mathamatician talk about that? You could even cover the diversity bit if they were black, asian etc. But I suppose she has a degree in Physics or something, right?

However you feel about beauty pageant, it's a scholarship pageant system. Only educated, young (unmarried) women can apply.

Look above.

So it is still a fucked up morality police competition. And awarding a scholarship doesn't mean the competitors are smart or particularly well educated.

If they want to reward intelligence, they don't need to have an evening wear or fitness/swimsuit section.

In school suspension is the dumbest shit. Remember having to do a day because I was late multiple times to class. Yeah, not being in my classes is totally going to help get those grades up.

i used to ditch a lot and got these all the time. i had to sit in a room with all of the "bad" kids and read.

Regardless of the prerequisites, this particular case is a beautiful, intelligent woman. What the fuck is your beef?

I was just saying that you have to be educated in order to be a Miss America in response to the "I don't know why an educated woman would..." thought. If you wanted to be Miss America, you wouldn't have any other choice.

And I was being cheeky with young (unmarried) part, but you'd have know way of knowing that on a message board with the way I typed it.

Ah, I did miss that, apologies. All good.
