Teen Titans: The Judas Contract

I picked this up yesterday and just finished it. I had read the Titans years ago, and this story in particular had left an impression in my mind. It was the main reason I was a fan of the Titans and continue to read the new series today. I wondered if the story would still be good, would I see new things in it I had not seen as a child reading it.

Well, after reading it this time around my opinion of it has actually gone up. I've been buying allot of trades the past couple months, and it stands up with the best of them. I never felt the story got slow, I was always interested in what would happen next (even though I still basically remembered the story). The characters were all interesting, with Tera and Deathstroke being a particuraly grotesque pair...I hadn't realized the depth of their relationship when I was a kid.

Just a great, great story. My favorite TT of all time, no doubt.

Hmmm....

I reread this not so long ago (about a year) and I do agree it's gotten better with time. But in my case, I was originally disappointed in it. See, Deathstroke was this very scary boogeyman, who the Titans could never capture, and who could pop up and threaten them at any time. And Terra was scary while she was a mole. But the story put and end to both of those things. They caught Slade (or rather, he gave up) and Terra's finale was nowhere near as good as the buildup. Oh, and they introduced my least-favorite-ever Titan, Jericho.

But, the story is very well told, the characters compelling, and you do get to see exactly why Slade is such a scary character. He plans to win. He intends to win. And he'll do whatever it takes to win.
