Tekken 5 PS2 Interview

Some good stuff... some dodged stuff...

It's with the director of the game, Katsuhiro Harada. He dodges a lot of questions, and he's vague on some answers, but if you read into them you can speculate on a few things.

Of note... it looks like the new Tekken Force that was mentioned before will be similar to Konquest Mode in MK Deception.

"The recently released Mortal Kombat: Deception features a Puzzle game, a Chess game, and a mini-adventure mode. In the past, we’ve seen an adventure mode included in Soul Calibur. Are there any plans to add such a feature to Tekken 5?"

I omitted this question from the posted interview because his response was, "Same as Answer 6." Which was, "The bonus game to be featured in Tekken 5 will be completely different from the previous bonus games in its content, volume and quality."

Also... there appear to be multiple bonus games, multiple ranking systems and multiple ways to earn money for custom items.

Enjoy.

A lot of dev double-speak in there, but still worth the read. I was interested to see that they'll have a player ranking system for the arcade and home versions - wonder if that means online scoring as well?
The game will not be compatible with the PS2 hard drive.
*sniff*

I'm still in shock that the console version will be out in the 1st quarter (EB had it listed for 2/22/05). I just know there will be a delay. It seems too good to be true.

Definitely seems too good to be true. Knowing namco, they'll push it back 6 months or more for no good reason.

I can't wait.

I'm guessing the US release will get pushed back, but I can see it coming out in Japan so soon. T4's JPN PS2 release was less than a year.

In the Gamepro interview, Harada mentioned he wanted the balance tweaked so that there were few to none of the "weak characters", (Yoshi, Lei, Bryan, King...), that hamstrung T4 in the eyes of alot of players, (like me). I'm not sure why he's so dodgy here; it was like he hadn't even thought of tweaking it between versions or something.

That would go a long way to selling this game on me. I'd rather not suffer Jin vs. Jin ad infinium 6 months into release with no fresh version of Soul Calibur or Virtua Fighter to catch my attention.

I havent' played Yoshi yet but apparently the winner of a recent T5 tourney in Japan used him. I have played Lei though. He's much better than he was in T4. He's almost T3/TTT strength. Bryan is a monster in T5. Right now, it looks like he's got the best wall game out of all the characters. I haven't played King yet either but I don't think he's changed much. He's not really a bad character, its just that most people don't know how to play him properly. And you'll be glad to hear that Jin was toned down.

It'd be hard to tweak them for the PS2 version if it comes out so soon, they'd have to do it all at the last minute. At this point it's way too early to be deciding who is the best and who is the worst. We don't even have the complete roster out. Like Jin wasn't thought of as the best at this point in time in T4's era.

Sweet. I was horrified to find many of my mains just...weak as kittens in T4, it killed any inclination in me to keep playing farther than 3 months in the arcade, never mind buying the PS2 version. I just hope it's more about changed priority/frame rates and shuffled/updated movelists rather than just monkeying with the damage rates.

Lei and King did suck in T4. They're better in 5.

Nina's still good.

Dunno about Heihachi yet. Probably really good, as always.
