Whoa, I didn't expect this to be so serious.o_O

You think this is a GAME? Well... it- it is, but it's a fightin' game, and all words about fightin' games are fightin' words!

I once chewed a man's ear off for dissing Roger Jr.

I really don't see how this character is any worse than Anna or Nina, or the other women they've added over the years that I can't remember the names of.

But Nina and Anna are cool characters. This character design is wack for Tekken. Nevermind whether it be loli or Idol or whatever. It's just a sh*t character design for Tekken and as one of the headline characters for the new game it's just really poor as you can tell by people's reaction. I don't remember there being an uproar when Jin, Hwaorang, Xiouyu, Feng Wei or another of the passed headline characters were announced.

Those mitts are adorable.

Voice is kinda grating, not sure if I can main if I have to listen to that every round.

This thread though... I think I'll play her just to spread the salt.

Tekken has fighting bears, wooden dummies, undead zombies, a tiny dinosaur, a guy with a two foot tall flat top, a cyborg, and Eddy.

Tekken is not a conservatively characterized video game.

I doubt they are really going to block this character in North America. Funny watching NeoPrudes do their thing though.

lol, people aren't saying they don't like the design because of it's prudishness. People are professing their love for Nina for gods sake. Who has said they don't like it cause it's too sexy or sexual? There is tons of sexualized character designs that people like, haha.

I don't like the gloves but other than that she's great. Can't believe this is really causing "controversy".

O, you would believe if you didn't think it was great! snaf.

So if this whole "idol" thing isn't about sex then where are the ugly ones? Where are the fat ones? where are the ones wearing less revealing clothing? And if they don't want to have anything with sex then why are they doing their best to be as sexy and provocative as possible?

Look at all of them trying to be as sexy and revealing as possible.

Just a few of the less attractive ones since you asked.

mayu being less provocative for you

I can't believe people are really acting like Tekken was never weird and silly.

The fact that this is even a uproar is sad as fuck.

Like I said in another thread dudes take shit way to seriously.

I could see if Kaz was gender bent into a moe girl and the we're rainbow particles and shit, with peppy jpop blasting everywhere... But it's not. It's one character....

If it's more than that, then your ass should have dropped Tekken a long time ago. It just means your tastes changed... Sucks that a series you loved has passed you by but too bad.
But
Again not everything has to appeal to you.

That is how life works. I don't run up I'm a mortal kombat thread asking for characters that appeal onlyto mme... Because I know that's not going to happen.

I think people's ideal of what Tekken was is faaaar different from what it has been since two. It is a series that has a serious plot but also a lot of silly stuff along side it.... EVERY JAPANESE FIGHTING GAME does this. Street fighter has its silly characters like Dan. Go and BB has multiple joke characters and Tekken is the king. Just because this one isn't to your specific liking doesn't mean it is any different.

Tekken has been consistently unique with characters since T3. Robots, kangaroos, little girls, dinosaurs, mad scientists, and more all mixed in with your normal karatemans.

Of all the series to complain about in regard to "different" characters, Tekken makes the least sense.

I don't understand the fuss, Tekken has always had weird/wacky characters. Stretching from fighting as a Panda to a girl with chainsaw arms.

Personally I just hope this game is better than Tekken 6.

I think there's a difference between Alisa and Lucky. Alisa is a cutesy character with hilariously weird things like chainsaw arms and throwing off her own head. Lucky is just a cute character without that sort of weirdness.

Also, this thread took a weird turn.

Look at all of them trying to be as sexy and revealing as possible.

Probably worth noting that the *48 groups are actually some of the least modest groups outside of weird underground niche groups.

Idols have nothing on western pop stars re: sleaze.

e: also momoka should have kept the blue hair

Lili and Alisa were already pandering to the Japanese/otaku audience, so it's not like Chloe is surprising in that regard. Lili is just as annoying. But at least Lili and Alisa are good character designs with unique (though made-up) fighting styles.

I think it's just that some of long-time fans are just fed up with this otaku-pandering direction Harada is taking the series in. Yes, there's always been crazy characters, but it all happened within a certain fictional world where people were vying for power/revenge/etc, and so in that, robots and devils were acceptable. Those things weren't Japan/anime specific, they were just bizarre and funny. Throwing your son into a volcano isn't anime, it's more like Greek/Roman tragedy. Tekken was always like a fighting game soap opera.

Alisa and Lili (Lili less so) fit into that world. They have obvious aspects which are designed to appeal to certain fans of otaku culture, but they still feel like Tekken characters. But the design of Chloe is not subtle; she was designed specifically to appeal to the moe/idol audience. That is her raison d'être. If Chloe ends up being an unlockable, only in one game character like Gon, then I think all this outrage will die down. But if she is actually supposed to be part of the new roster, then I think many of us will begin to question whether Harada and team can still deliver great new characters. So far in Tekken 7 I haven't seen anything which gives me confidence on that front.

Let me post here again quick just to make things clear.

Part of the things why people are mad is not on this character alone, but also knowing that there will be massive character cuts beforehand. For me, AK and Marduk is almost guaranteed to be cut looking at the things King has and the character slots left. The fighters with legit fighting styles that was proven with time to be fun to play and well designed is being replaced by this char and the chars beforehand (goofy chars that's annoying to fight AND pretty strong, not to mention too noob friendly for their strength) and you got this outrage.

These days fucking "gamers" want to cry more about games than actually play them. people like that are the ones who are ruining the hobby really. Since there are some occasions where the publishers actually listen to those doinks assuming they are the majority of the consumer base which is anything but.
I'd be more concerned about publishers fucking us over with uncreative untested games filled with microtransactions than whiny gamers.

Then again, I actually play video games.

I'm a bit late with this, but...
I think there are issues with Namco's character design in general- I think SC5 was also hurt by this.

SC5 was the best SC under the hood, despite Just Impact, yet the game had issues because they replaced designs people liked with designs people didn't. I remember a lot of folks being kinda disgusted with Pyrrha and thinking the new characters in general weren't as good as the old ones.
Pyrrha's design was never the problem in her case, as opposed to her personality (her look was comparable to something Cassandra might have gone with, yet she was even more timid and apologetic than Sophitia ever was). Either way, the problems with SCV's roster could've easily been avoided if the director didn't basically pick a 17-year time skip out of a hat (it seems it was an arbitrary decision by his own admission, rather than at all motivated by a desire to do anything significant with it).
Is it just me or do some GAFers go hard on the moe/anime aesthetic hate in some vain attempt at looking mature?
It's very common, yes, on both the gaming and OT sides.

I rarely touched the Tekken games but I see nothing wrong with this character being in a cast of wacky fighting fashionistas, robots, and bears. I only have a surface level understanding of the series and even I think the whining is pathetic.

lol they took every Anime waifu stereotype and threw it into the sink in order to appease everyone

;))))

Edit: Being serious though... I really don't care how they make the characters look like as long as their fighting styles are balanced and varied/interesting

I often dislike it because it's omnipresent and generally uncreative and annoying. Nothing like seeing all the originality and character sucked out of something to pander (Like that wonderful Monster Hunter anime trailer).

But I think Lucky isn't that bad because, as mentioned before, Tekken is a melting pot of weird shit.

I think it's the furry thing that pushes it over the edge honestly.

Organically weird characters are welcomed but this is a rip off of a DOA character with a fetish slapped on top of it.

She looks just as stupid as Lars does.

Don't see the problem.

The fact that Harada basically says "You Western folk don't like Chloe? Well, then maybe I'll make some big, tough guy because that's what you Westerners like" is very telling of the actual problem.

It's not that Chloe is "TOO WACKY FOR TEKKEN". She's not.

It's not that idol-like characters are "too sexy" for Tekken. Tekken is filled with sexy. Female AND male. And, I don't think Chloe is particularly provocative, anyways.

The problem is that characters like Chloe and Harada's subsequent response seem to demonstrate creative bankruptcy.

"Hey, here's a common Japanese trope: cutesy, anime idol girl! What, you don't like that, Westerners? Then, here's another trope in response: Big, muscular, Western tough guy. That's what you like, isn't it?"

As if he can only speak in "tropes". There is no subtlety or innovation in the character designs anymore. How many young, giggling, dancing, immature female characters does this series need anyways?

How many female Tekken characters with actual relevancy, potential, and *gasp* maturity have been gradually put out to pasture in favor of "immature, cute girl" already? Why the heck is a central character like Jun STILL a completely mystery nearly 20 years later...yet Ling Xiaoyu, ditsy animu girl who dances with pandas, has starred in movies.

Can we get something a little DIFFERENT now? Are these our only choices? "Cutesy, young girl" trope and "big, soulless muscular guy" trope? Personally, I'd like to think that female characters have much more potential than THIS, time after time after time. Marie Rose, literally JUST came out, geez.

Hey, what about cutesy, dancing, posing anime...GUY? What about big, grizzled, muscular, battle hardened...WOMAN? See how easy it is to subvert overused tropes?

Wasn't Katarina, the first new female unveiled for this game's roster, already the complete opposite of Chloe, in being more of a serious and mature type?

And, did you see the same backlash for Katarina that Chloe is seeing now? To the point where Harada was threatening to remove her from the game, because the backlash was so strong?

Do you think the difference in reaction is indicative of anything? Katarina wasn't even that innovative...but, at least she wasn't ANOTHER animu girl. Especially in the context of the currently confirmed female characters, who skew heavily toward the "younger" side.

You know what? I hope they do replace the character now. I hope they replace her with a big, bald-headed spacemarine-type who plays and acts exactly like Lucky Chloe.

There was a pretty big backlash for Katarina, yes.

That would be a hilarious character, so I kinda hope they do that too.
