Tell me all about Guild Wars

I am looking into playing a new MMO...Guild Wars has crossed my mind alot but I dont know much about it...tell me everything you know..positive/negative...anything!!

THanks :)

Guild Wars is more of a 3D Diablo-type game; it's not a MMORPG. It also has a completely different mode where you pit your guild against others. I notice when I'm playing that there seems to be a constant battle between American guilds and Korean guilds "for the favor of the gods," whatever that means. :)

The game is pretty fun and is also free to play online; only expansions will cost money. I find that the game is doing a nice job of satisying any itch I might have to play PSO or even a MMORPG game.

My girl hates PC games so much, but Guild Wars turns her on. I need to go read up on it some more, too, because I'm about to get dragged all up into it. :P

What's the min/max players per game, since it's not MMO?

Not sure; I've been playing all solo missions so far.

Solo missions? All right, just me against the world. I'm a little more interested now.

Sure, it's just like PSO (and perhaps Diablo? Never really got into it); you don't have to do the quests with others if you don't want to, but as the game's name implies, it IS all about guilds. :)

Hahaha, this thread reminds me, I dreamt that I bought a copy of this game and was really happy with it and got really into it. How wierd, too much GAF before hitting the sack for me I think.. :lol

Guild wars is IMHO different from Diablo II. At the same time it has virtually nothing to do with the MMORPG genre.

It is all about PvP. As long as you have everything unlocked for PvP (you unlock stuff for PvP Only characters by completing or gaining stuff for PvE characters, who can also be used in PvP). The level limit for characters right now is only level 20, and it isn't going up anytime soon.

I don't know what max character limit is for PvP.. I do know that I have been sucked into PvP with around I believe 20 some other players. While the MMO aspect probably won't compare to WoW Battlegrounds (when they come out.. eventually...) the existing PvP IMHO is just as "epic" as your typical WoW PvP skirmish.. the big difference is if you are all playing PvP Only or maxed PvE characters there won't be quite the discrepency that there is in WoW when you have 60's ganking only lower level characters in battles.

Pvping is WAY more strategic in GW(then in WOW at the present IMO). Think of it like Magic(the game) where you have a deck of X amount of cards and that is what you have to work with. When you pvp the focus is really on the strategy you come up with and working together with your other teammates. This is imperative to survive. It's actually a hell of A LOT more balanced then WOW pvp.

Also a side note, even though lvl 20 is the cap for now I just read that there is a TON of content for lvl 20 players. As a matter of fact MOST of the content is for the high end. 1-19 are sort of training for lvl 20 stuff. Anyway, don't think level 20 is the end. There are plenty of missions and areas to explore to keep you busy for awhile. :)

Not this shit again.

Phantom Dust was supposed to be the same thing.

GW isn't Diablo; there's no real random drops -- the loot factor just isn't there. Heck, it isn't even PSO. Everything feels very, very scripted and predetermined.

Just like your posts.

Maybe so but it's still very fun. How far did you get Drinky? I agree though to some extent. the one thing this game could really benefit from is TONS of items (ala diablo). other then that though, I think the game is very well done.

p.s.- why does the forum speed suck so much balls today?!

The number of people in your party in GW starts off at 2 while you're in Pre-Searing Ascalon. Basically, the beginning of the game, which is sort of an extended tutorial with plenty of quests to build your character and get exp. and some basic items. It's very easy to solo these areas and quickly get your character up to 5th or 6th level.

Once you join the Academy and jump into Post-Searing Ascalon, which is where the meat of the game begins, your party size goes up to 4 characters. As you complete missions it soon increases to 6 and then eventually caps out at 8. It's harder to solo these areas, although there are some decent henchmen that you can add to your party to help you out. The creatures are tougher, swarm on you more, and there is a death penalty instilled on you when you die in these zones. Basically, the world gets a lot more harsh.

I played for 5 hours Friday night with some good friends, levelling up and getting into Post-Searing, and it was a blast. We all did some basic quests to build skills and get exp/items. Next Friday when we meet up, we're going to start tackling the actually missions themselves.

DC is correct in that the loot factor is way lower than Diablo II and PSO. The reason being (the devs have come straight out and said) that they don't want a huge disparity between individual characters like other MMORPGs. The problem with PvP in WoW (from personal experience) is that the higher level characters will go after the lower level characters, and same level characters will only go after same level characters with the assistance of either higher level characters or guards. if that makes sense. so PvP in WoW is basically level 60 characters "ganking" (for lack of a better term) level 40 characters in a big brawl and only fighting other level 60 characters with the assistance of multiple level 60 characters (ie 3 on 1 or worse) or guards (20 on one). The PvP Honor system was supposed to correct that but I have been gone since PvP Honor went into effect (which was just recently).

guild wars "corrects" this by essentially evening the playing field. there is much less discrepency between characters and thus much less ganking. Everyone can create a PvP Only character which is essentially a maxed (Level 20) character with access to every item (which as DC pointed out aren't insanely varied) you have unlocked in PvE mode.

The result is a very unique game IMHO. MMORPG style PvP skirmishes without the frustration of one uber character ruining the entire thing. Of course for those who like being uber, it means they will never be able to do so in the game... but for those who just enjoy the true nature of PvP in online RPGs, i.e. not griefing and honest competition, there is really nothing else out there like it.

Even level 60 WoW, because of the loot discrepancy, can end up being frustrating if a casual level 60 ends up squaring off against a raid loot whore. that has a much greater tendency of not happening in Guild Wars.

Someone here in GAF was saying a while back that Guild Wars was gonna have massive amounts of loot (like diablo). Damn them!

GW has some diablo/pso like characteristics that make it somewhat addictive.

That said, it has extremely irritating issues:
- Lack of armor/weapon variety. This almost kills it for me. Every damn weapon/armor is a generic and all character classes look the same. They have dye for you to dye your armor, but guess what? YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT! Woo for customization. Bastards.

- Death penalty is way too harsh, specially when the recovering rate is tied to experience, and not time. It's extremely annoying to spend an hour doing a quest, die, then get nerfed 15%, which makes it even harder to complete the quest because now your health/energy is 15% lower. So, you keep dying and the penalty goes up. Maximum is 60%, which makes the player simply have to redo the entire area again. Couple that with the fact that the henchmen you can hire have AI that's absolutely unreliable (that damn healer waits until I'm at 10% of my health to heal me... WTF!?) and well, it only serves to annoy you even more.

- The game needs a better way/interface to facilitate groups/parties. Most of the times I end up hiring worthless henchmen after waiting 20 minutes for people to team up with unsuccessfully.

Addressing your "irritating issues":
-Lack of armor/weapon variety: I'd have to agree with you here. Most things look generically the same. I know they wanted to create a balance for the game, but they could have made more variety while keeping the stats/powers etc. balanced. You can customize your character at the beginning to a suitiable level, but in game, there isn't much to make you stand out too much. At least so far, early in the game. Using the dye's does help to give you a little bit of a distinquishing character, and you don't have to buy dyes. I've had them as drops a number of times. Played quite a bit on Friday and a little on Saturday and Sunday, and had three or four vials dropped in that time. If you do buy from the vendor, it is very expensive however.

-Death Penalty: Yep, it is harsh, but it can be over come, and if the majority of your party survives, it's not a really big deal. Still, they have to have some penalty for dying. If the penalty becomes too large, you're better off heading back to town to clear it off and then return to the zone. Yes, it respawns the creatures you've already defeated, but the Quest remains intact for you to pursue. Remove the death penalty, and try a new strategy.

-Party creation interface: It can get kind of chaotic at times in the MMO zones, I'll agree. We use our friends lists to see who is online and send private messages. Organizing a team from random players can take a bit more time, but hasn't really been a problem for me so far. The group that I play with on a regular basis is simply going to create a Guild to help keep track of where everyone is at and using the "Guild Channel" to communicate with one another, and organize our games.

All in all, the game is simply a blast to play. My group has found itself addicted already, and we're still exploring the early sections of the game, collecting skills, and gaining exp. Can't wait to start the missions.

Oh I'll enjoy, I fooled around with the beta's since like Dec. My character is now level 3 monk\ele. Just soloing some simple quests right now.
