GW has some diablo/pso like characteristics that make it somewhat addictive.
That said, it has extremely irritating issues:
- Lack of armor/weapon variety. This almost kills it for me. Every damn weapon/armor is a generic and all character classes look the same. They have dye for you to dye your armor, but guess what? YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT! Woo for customization. Bastards.
- Death penalty is way too harsh, specially when the recovering rate is tied to experience, and not time. It's extremely annoying to spend an hour doing a quest, die, then get nerfed 15%, which makes it even harder to complete the quest because now your health/energy is 15% lower. So, you keep dying and the penalty goes up. Maximum is 60%, which makes the player simply have to redo the entire area again. Couple that with the fact that the henchmen you can hire have AI that's absolutely unreliable (that damn healer waits until I'm at 10% of my health to heal me... WTF!?) and well, it only serves to annoy you even more.
- The game needs a better way/interface to facilitate groups/parties. Most of the times I end up hiring worthless henchmen after waiting 20 minutes for people to team up with unsuccessfully.
Addressing your "irritating issues":
-Lack of armor/weapon variety: I'd have to agree with you here. Most things look generically the same. I know they wanted to create a balance for the game, but they could have made more variety while keeping the stats/powers etc. balanced. You can customize your character at the beginning to a suitiable level, but in game, there isn't much to make you stand out too much. At least so far, early in the game. Using the dye's does help to give you a little bit of a distinquishing character, and you don't have to buy dyes. I've had them as drops a number of times. Played quite a bit on Friday and a little on Saturday and Sunday, and had three or four vials dropped in that time. If you do buy from the vendor, it is very expensive however.
-Death Penalty: Yep, it is harsh, but it can be over come, and if the majority of your party survives, it's not a really big deal. Still, they have to have some penalty for dying. If the penalty becomes too large, you're better off heading back to town to clear it off and then return to the zone. Yes, it respawns the creatures you've already defeated, but the Quest remains intact for you to pursue. Remove the death penalty, and try a new strategy.
-Party creation interface: It can get kind of chaotic at times in the MMO zones, I'll agree. We use our friends lists to see who is online and send private messages. Organizing a team from random players can take a bit more time, but hasn't really been a problem for me so far. The group that I play with on a regular basis is simply going to create a Guild to help keep track of where everyone is at and using the "Guild Channel" to communicate with one another, and organize our games.
All in all, the game is simply a blast to play. My group has found itself addicted already, and we're still exploring the early sections of the game, collecting skills, and gaining exp. Can't wait to start the missions.
