Tesla Motors today outed its newest vehicle plans, a smaller car called the Model 3, that Auto Express reports is designed squarely to take on BMW's 3 series. According to the report — which Tesla confirmed today — the vehicle will be 20 percent smaller than the Model S, and go more than 200 miles on a charge. The Model 3 will be properly unveiled in 2016, with sales beginning the following year, Auto Express says.

The Model 3 will actually be the company's fourth car, and is set to come after Tesla's Model X. That vehicle was unveiled at an event in California in 2012, and is headed to early buyers later this year. It's a "crossover" that falls somewhere between a sedan and a sport utility vehicle, and fits up to seven passengers. The company originally planned to begin building it last year, but that timetable was pushed back.

In an interview with Auto Express, Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk said the name for the Model 3 stemmed back to a legal entanglement with Ford, which threatened to sue Tesla over a trademark for "Model E."

"We were going to call it model E for a while and then Ford sued us saying it wanted to use the Model E — I thought this is crazy, Ford's trying to kill sex! So we'll have to think of another name," Musk said. "The new model is going to be called Model III, we'll have three bars to represent it and it'll be S III X!"

I can't believe this hasn't been posted yet. Although it won't be properly unveiled until 2016.

So it'll be the right size for roasting marshmallows, instead of the usual full-on bonfire?

Bringing your full on jerk as usual, I see.

Will be very interested to see their price target for this car. I'm a fan of Tesla and would love to own one someday. Model S is too far out of my price range at the moment.

$35k

I need a countdown timer.

I don't believe they'll hit that number. Maybe when the gigafactory is up and running. But if they can get it below $40K for a base model, gets 200 miles EPA rated range, be supercharger capable, and looks good . . . it will still be a huge hit.

This is the future. 100% torque at 0 RPM. Fuel up at home. No oil drips. No smog checks. No paying for gasoline. Can generate fuel on your rooftop with solar PV. No smells. No oil change. Low maintenance. No engine noise. No lurching transmission. No local emissions. Driving on electricity is extremely cheap. No exhaust.

Why Ford no like sex?

S3X!

If this is 35k...2016 unveil with sales in 2017? I could wait three years for my next car.

I need a garage, though. That's the bad part about this. I really have no way of charging a car in my current living situation (and probably future honestly..since I plan on moving back into Boston).

You guys get touchy over car jokes now too?

I LOVE electric cars. The coal industry needs them.

A power plant can burn fossil fuels much more efficiently than a car with an ICE. So even if it we were to power our electric cars with fossil fuels it would still save a lot of pollution.

Not that we only/will only use fossil fuels to generate the electricity for them.

Is it 35K before or after the rebates and stuff?

Musk has previous said $35K before any tax-credits.

However, he said that a couple years ago. So perhaps you'll have to add inflation to his figure. I doubt they'll be able to hit that target. But if they even come close for a car with a 200 mile range, that will be a huge win.

Heck, by 2017, even $45K may seem like an incredible value if gas prices shoot up.

The Gigafactory is planned to be up and running simultaneously with the 3's release. I agree they might not hit the mark. Under 40k and over 200 miles would be awesome. If there's still a tax rebate it's under 35k after that is taken into account.

They've been pretending to show off electric pickup trucks for like fifteen years.

Well, Mitsubishi will be launching their Outlander SUV PHEV in 2015 I think.

Conspiracy theory: I think the automakers have been hesitant to launch an electric or PHEV based SUV or pick-up because it will seriously cut into the huge profits they make on ICE SUV and pick-ups.

What are ICE SUVs? Like they drive themselves to DHS from home depot?(sorry =/)

Seriously though, I think the torque from electric motors would be great for work trucks, considering they are usually short distance drivers and are sitting around all day (potentially charging).

Internal combustion engine SUVs, AKA all SUVs right now. The Model X is an SUV/crossover, and is already proving to be more popular (by reservation rate) than the S with 6 months until its release.

ICE=Internal Combustion Engine.

And yes, EVs and PHEVs could be great for work trucks. Just think, you could easily use them to power up all your battery-powered tools as well.

How do they make more profit on suvs than they do on cars?

The price increase for the the space convenience has always seemed right to me.

My work truck would be awesome with a 0-6 electrice engine.

Does coal/fossil fuels fall under "other thermal" in that infographic?

I'm assuming those are just renders from some fanboy.

But my god, if they ship that for ~$40K and it is 200 miles range, they will sell shit loads.

The pics are from the original article that was confirmed by Tesla. They're a bit detailed and well done to be fakes, as well.

Small cost for more metal and big increase in price = more profit.

I can't parse this.

The price difference on cars/suvs doesn't' seem that different to me though. Maybe it's just south florida life, but I dont' know.

On the second thing...

Four cylinder gas engine in a pickup that takes like ten minute to hit 60 that hauls shit around.
