Teslas are bad cars?

I don't understand why when a manufacturer makes an EV they make it some gaudy futuristic shit every time, just make a normal nice car but then again even ICE cars have shit designs nowadays
Yeah my truck can control all the climate features on its touch screen but also has physical buttons below it. I never use the touch screen controls for that shit, it’s pretty much just for air play and half the time I just use my phone screen anyway. Giant touch screens in the middle of the dash are kinda dumb

Multiple reasons probably. The designers probably think it looks cool and the parts might be cheaper than actual buttons. I personally prefer 1 screen like Teslas though. When I look around in my ICE car I see billion buttons everywhere, doesn't seem intuitive to me.

Yes, it's cheaper to have a screen for almost everything than to have physical buttons and gauges too. I love that the cheaper to manufacture LCD gauge cluster is an upcharge than the traditional gauges with some cars. Consumers think they want it because it is "tech-y" even though it really is a worse option based on safety and ergonomics. I guaranty that replacing those screens out of warranty is going to be incredibly expensive and in some cases you can't safely operate the vehicle or use very basic functions without it.

I had the LCD central information display screen on my 2017 X3 die recently, BMW doesn't sell the screen by itself so you can pay 2800-3300 based on the prices I saw online for the parts. Dealer will happily charge you upwards of $4000+ USD to replace it. Used units on ebay 300-400. I'm buying just the bare LCD panel made by Sharp from a supplier in China and going to replace it myself for $150 shipped.

Thankfully, with my dead screen I didn't lose the ability to adjust my HVAC system, Speedometer, etc before I was supposed to drive 430 miles to visit family the same day.

I did lose my navigation map, tire pressures, oil level, service indicators, media options, and the ability to adjust various vehicle settings but nothing that would make operating the vehicle inherently dangerous.

At least quote the reason!

“The electric vehicle firm announced it was recalling 356,309 vehicles because of potential rear-view camera issues affecting 2017-2020 Model 3 Teslas”

“A safety report, submitted this month, estimates that around 1% of recalled Model 3s may have a defective rear-view camera.”

Get outta here with your facts.

I think some of you are missing the bad parts;

Firstly, as a new car company; the tooling up and designing is one of the biggest humps to over come. Panel fitment, streamlining manufacturing processes to bring costs down etc, that takes time. Back in the day everyone would go on about what a POS Japanese cars were, now if you want solid, reliable, get Japanese. At least till very recently, because Korean cars went through the same stages, but they are really up there now. Someone mentioned earlier in the thread about 'Tesla being on par with Kia quality'. Like no, Kia, Hyundai and all them are really on the ball. And if you think the Chinese won't get there either; you better start thinking again. They will serious players very very soon.

Tesla will get there but the important thing with electric cars is there are super simple. Far less moving parts. Shitty little things like panel gaps and malfunctioning handles aside, the motors and drive trains are solid and EV's are much much more reliable in general. Battery degradation is going to be the biggest factor, but I am sure they'll start offering up better solutions not just from the technology but replacement schemes.

I think personally the biggest segment is going to be electric offroaders. All these offroaders and people getting excited for 500nm utes; electric utes will blow these to the weeds; and if you start considering what can be software with software to control multiple wheel on axle designs they will be off road monsters. The biggest concern will be range, but I expect to see better regeneration technology, solar powered systems etc. Sure it's not the most exciting sound and right now if you are a serious offroader who goes off grid for days with no access to power points it's an issue now, but other than that, EV's really are going to leave everything else for dead.

I think anyone who follows the EV industry knows that within a few years people will just laugh at ICE cars. The biggest question to me is whether or not China will really invade the west with their cars. I don't think people want Chinese cars here because of China's image, but it looks like their cars will be cheaper and even better. In the end money talks.

China will just buy recognizable companies and sell their cars with that company's name. Example: Geely -> Volvo/Polestar

I can't wait until they make electric airplanes and replace the controls with an ipad.

I haven't really looked into it. I'm all for new tech if it improves cars, the driving experience, and improves energy requirements. That being said full electric cars seem on an order more expensive than gas for now, and most people are going to do what is cheaper. And given current inflation and a weakening lower/middle-class, who could blame them? I saw the newer Rav4 lineup for example. You can buy it in gas, hybrid, or full electric. The price doubles by the time you get to electric.

No CEO is a savior though (not with the way current industry works) and my bs detectors go off when anyone is treated like some unstoppable hero.

I really do hope more transport innovations are made though. Can you imagine a true blue self-driving car where you can sip your coffee and watch a video while you skip all that roadrage and danger? Probably won't happen in my lifetime but I'd love that!

This is a little OT but I'm really curious what happens in the next 10 years. The push towards EV's is enormous, but the amount of electricity produced doesn't increase drastically. Heck, some countries even decide to close down nuclear plants and rely more on unpredictable renewable energy (unpredictable when it comes to producing power at a stable rate). Are we in for major blackouts & grid failures and politicians bullshitting about people working together for the sake of the planet or is owning a new car and using it whenever you please going to become a luxury for the wealthiest?

People are making money on solar and wind so the growth will just be explosive. I don't think it will be an issue. Especially since most charging is done at night.

China Teslas are too expensive. A KIA EV6 is cheaper in yuropia.

Better build, better looking (imho), 800v under 20min charging, vtov load thingy, you can take your grill to work, open a shop there and make hotdogs for your work buddies, better drive, not as fast on a straight (who cares), more room, has no phantom breaking issues etc.

A €76.880 Model Y is even worse in comparison. Model 3 €69.870 max range + power.

There is a promotion going on in yurop. Up to €10,000 discount on kia, hyundias.
EV6 Air €34.700
EV6 Air Long Range €38.600
GT6 Line RWD Long Range €43.300
EV6 GT €59.218

holy shit is hyundias store bad
€36.810+ for the Inoiq5 light edition up to €50,000+

Ford Mach E €50,000+
ID4 Pro €51.980

The Tesla prices might go down this year, they will double production with 2 new factories. And EV6 does seem good, but Kia isnt making a lot. So might be hard to get.

Tesla prices were going down. Then Covid, Parts shortages, supply and demand drove prices back up.

But with more factories and competition price will be lowered! Tesla wants everyone in EVs. It’s a reason they are opening up their SuperCharger networks!

Here at Finland Tesla prices are about the same as what you said(add 10-20% here depending of the model), but cheapest EV6 model is 48 000€ and the best AWD is 70 000€ (+ added features on top of that) Some tesla models get over 100 000€, I think that even model S goes over 100k with all self driving stuff and features.

Hyundai ionic 5 starts from 48 000€ and goes up to 60 000€ (+ added features on top of that)

Add rims+winter tires + engine warmer package, paint and some minor stuff -> +2000€ easily.

Still cheaper than Tesla, but just saying that EVs arent that cheap on every european country.

Same with normal cars, like huyndai i20N is 29 990€ on base model, and about 35-36 000€ with navi pack, color+black roof and winter pack, yet it is 10-12 000€ cheaper on some EU countries.
