Tetris goes DS -- ONLINE!

The long blue bar. The yellow block. And those darn zigzag things whose images stay on your brain. These familiar Tetris shapes started a generation of video game fans. Now Nintendo is putting a new spin on the classic with Tetris® DS, available March 20 exclusively for Nintendo DS, which incorporates the use of Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, Nintendo's wireless gaming service.

Hard-core and casual gamers alike became obsessed with the original. Tetris DS builds on that emotional attachment by combining the original game with new types of game play that could only be possible on Nintendo DS.

Each of the six modes of play features a theme based on a classic Nintendo game, such as Super Mario Bros.®, The Legend of Zelda® or Metroid®. The traditional Tetriminos (falling blocks) and line-clearing strategy remain the staples of the game, but the touch screen adds a new element of interactivity.

Some modes give players special Tetris puzzles to solve. Others feature head-to-head action between two players, or massive wireless battles between 10 DS users, even if only one player has a game card. Players also can log onto Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to compete in two- or four-player battles. Tetris DS even includes a point-based rating system based on players' battle results. Opponents can see one another's ratings, which indicate their skill levels.

Every gamer, whether competitive or casual, will find a way to reconnect with one of the most popular puzzle games in history.
It's online _O_

Howard Lincoln and Minoru Arakawa probably walked into THQ headquarters to use the bathroom and came out with the license for Tetris.

Stupid question: What do I need for the DS to use wi-fi with my DS? or can it use wi-fi out of the box?

Three options.

1. If you have a broadband connection, you can connect to it wirelessly assuming you have a compatible wireless router.

2. You can use the Nintendo USB wi-fi dongle.

3. Use a free wireless hotspot/tap into your neighbours unsecured wireless connection

Sweet. My girlfriend's been asking me none stop when tetris was coming. Dear knows when it will hit the UK but.

EDIT: I just read above this is the supposedly the European release date, even better.
EDIT 2: I just read below it's the US release date, my happiness has been shattered.

I'm sure it'll be not to long after, it's not like there's much to translate :lol

Very cool if true! We need more handheld puzzle games online. Bomberman, Bust-a-Move, Tetris Attack etc etc. I mean, puzzle games should be easy to get working online since there's not a lot of data going back and forth between players, right?

I would guess it must be from THQ, as they have the Tetris rights and some deal with Nintendo to use Nintendo characters in their games.

I hope thye include some of the classic tunes for background music. Classic tunes from those series I mean, not Tetris ones (though that'd be great). They also better include a normal mode, assuming the touch screen doesn't just work like traditional Tetris anyway.

I hate it when they mess around with Tetris.

how the fuck am I supposed to get on with my life nintendo? HOW?

I am onto my 5th tic tac box to hold all my games already, I'm drowning in games. DROWNING.

*goes back to mario kart and sonic rush*

Who remembers Tetrinet? Brilliant game.

This is exactly what I'm picturing plus pictures of mario all over it, which gives me wood :(

It's listed on Nintendo's press site, they're publishing it (doesn't say who's developing it).

Homer will be happy.

Classic moment.

<Looks up at Q entertainment>

Please...please give me a Meteos sequel that has wi-fi. I wanna blow up more planets :(

Back on topic: Hell yeah this is awesome. Gonna have to pick this game up.

I'm curious what kind of impact it could have on DS sales. It could have a small impact, or it could have a huge ass ridiculous impact. Nothing in between :p

I usually don't like unlockables, but in this case I hope this has unlockables like the N64 version of Tetris (The New Tetris?). New backgrounds after 10,000 lines, etc.

At any rate, the card had better keep track of total number of lines. I like to feel as if I'm accomplishing something with my wasted time.

Wonderful... DS non-compatibility with original GB was bugging me due to Tetris.

I hope there's a classical mode, and that touch interaction deals with moving pieces with the pen (which could be great), no a gimmicky addition...

Yes, right, I agree.

On January 25, 2005, Nintendo of America Inc. ("Nintendo") and THQ Inc. ("Registrant") entered into a Confidential License Agreement for the Nintendo DS handheld platform. The agreement grants the Registrant the right to use certain of Nintendo's intellectual property to develop, publish and distribute video games for the Nintendo DS handheld platform until January 25, 2008 in all countries in the Western Hemisphere (including possessions and territories) in accordance with the terms of the agreement. Nintendo charges the Registrant certain amounts under its current pricing schedule, which prices includes including manufacturing as well as a royalty for the use of Nintendo's intellectual property. Subject to a cure period under certain circumstances, the Agreement may be terminated upon written notice by Nintendo in the event of a breach or default by the Registrant, if the Registrant becomes insolvent, files a petition for bankruptcy, is bankrupt (voluntary or involuntary) or otherwise ceases to do business, if Registrant materially breaches any other agreement with Nintendo with respect to game systems, or if the Registrant assigns the Agreement without Nintendo's reasonable prior written consent. Upon termination of the Agreement for other than the Registrant's breach or default, the Registrant has a limited period of time to sell any existing product inventory remaining as of the date of termination. The length of this sell-off period is 180 days. The Registrant must destroy any such inventory remaining after the end of the sell-off period. Upon termination as a result of the Registrant's breach or default, the Registrant must immediately cease marketing and distribution of the games and destroy any remaining inventory.

DS Tetrisphere would be brilliant with the touch screen.

MAKE IT HAPPEN!

And make sure you get the same composer who did the music for the N64 version.

I got a question for you guys:

Do I have to buy something to get the DS online? I could have sworn I tried setting up the WiFi shit when running Animal Crossing (my wifes game) and it told me I had to buy an adapter. Can anyone fill me in on how to get the thing online properly?

Erm, wasn't that THQ/Nintendo "deal" just another regular 3rd party contract in the end? Here's to hoping former RD1 is actually handling Tetris DS.

Was it? I never heard that, but it would explain why we hadn't heard anything in regards to Nintendo characters in THQ games since then (until now, possibly).

Either way, the Tetris license is THQ's. Not that that means Nintendo can't work on it, they just have to come to an agreement with THQ.
