Tetris goes DS -- ONLINE!

People consider Bomberman a puzzle game? How so?

I agree somewhat, but what genre is it if not puzzle?

Is there a bomberman PSP coming? i'd imagine the widescreen would lend itself welll to hi-ten esque online/local wifi. Then again, DS could be held sidewards like brain training and do similar, albeit cut in the middle

It's amazing. ~1 year ago I thought the DS was a joke. Now I own like 15 games for the damn thing. Can't wait for this!!

Would that not screw up pressing buttons? Anyway why couldn't u just go up and down between the screens?

There were shitloads of "Tetris DS" Promo-Boxes around the EB stores in Australia for a good few months in the middle of 2005. It was by THQ, but didn't show any Nintendo-based stuff in it, or online.

I'm betting they were going to release it, then Nintendo stopped them, and suggested a better deal :)

There were images on the back. Anyone know if they got online?

So does anyone reckon it will be played using the two screens for the whole level (which might be hard cause of the break in the middle), or just the one screen for playing and the other screen full of Marios/Zeldas dancing or something?

F****** TETRIS ATTACK FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE NINTENDO!?!?!?!?
Why don't you buy the GBA version? Then you can play it on GBA, DS and your TV (if you have GC with Game Boy Player)

It's called Puzzle League now, and comes on a 2in1 cartridge with Dr. Mario

Maybe the top screen will show characters and scenarios that relate to the theme of the level and how your game is going influences what they do (ala Puzzle Fighter).

eg. If you are losing terribly, Link will get surrounded by enemies etc, if you clear 4 lines at once Link will unleash a massive sword blow and destroy them all...

The bottom screen will no doubt be used to rotate the blocks amongst other things. I'd guess they'd have a couple of control setups for it; say if you don't want to use the touch screen controls, then you use the buttons and the playing area will stretch across both screens.

I don't really know, I'm sure there'll be a whole bunch of options.

You know that Bust-a-Move DS is already out, right? No online wi-fi, but it runs five-player multiplayer games off a single card. The touch-screen controls are the best I've seen on a DS game.

Oh, I know...the problem is, I don't know anyone close-by who actually owns a DS. That's why an online mode is very interesting to me.

Yeah, I realized that after posting and I'll admit it's more of an action game, and I could probably take it even further by saying Bust-a-Move is more "action" than puzzle as well, at least in multiplayer (it's not about solving puzzles, more about aiming, timing and strategy). But to be honest, I don't give a shit how people define it as long as there's a handheld version online. ;)

this is the boxart of the OLD Tetris DS, that didn't find its way to the shelves last year:

I wouldn't be surprised if the new boxart looks like that except with the addition of the WiFi logo.

That game was, by all accounts, pure shit, so THQ wisely decided not to release it at all. I'm sure this new Tetris DS is a completely different game.

And what's up with all these people saying THQ has the Tetris license? Tetris is owned by Blue Planet Software (Henk Rogers's company, formerly called Bulletproof Software), and BPS decides which companies to license the series to. Do we know for sure that the licenses are exclusive? Remember that Nintendo AND Capcom released versions of Tetris on N64, and other companies released versions in Japan.

I hear about this a little while ago. I know Nintendo is publishing and involved in the WiFi without the involvement of THQ as a publisher. However, I don't know the exact development team.

So nintendo likely paid thq to not release it? A nintendo version wouldn't have such a photoshop cover art.

Yeah, we (THQ) had it in test for a few weeks, and it was supposed to be done and ship about 10 months ago. It mysteriously disappeared, then showed up on Nintendo's release list.

The Tetris we had pales in comparison to this one. Holy shit.

It just keeps getting better and better. While Tetris can hardly be considered a killer app anymore, it's still a GREAT puzzle game. With online play, this should be a nice title to strengthen the DS library even more.

Holy crap!

If it has a classic mode included and normal controls and isn't that awful "attack" knockoff and < $30 (not $29.99 either) I'll get it!

...

Why are people so excited over this? I mean, Tetris is cool and everything, but it's old. If I want a DS puzzler I'll buy Meteos. Come on. -_-
