Texas couple brings Nigerian nanny to America — then turns her into a slave

What a terrible thing. It's fucked up enough to hold someone without pay and hold their passport. But to physically abuse them, making them eat leftovers only, not even being given a bed and having to strain milk from cereal just so she can have tea? Fuck that shit.

Send those scumbags to jail forever and throw away the key. I wish this lady would be given a green card for all she endured, and also given the couples home and entire real estate.

I do feel bad for the children, they are at no fault :/

How the fuck do people still have slaves in 2016? I get that some people are just criminal scum, but actual, sanctioned slavery? Blows the mind.

Well, in most case cases its not sanctioned, at least to some degree or another. Part of the problem is that there are various forms of slavery, and whilst some are viewed as basically abominable by literally all nations on Earth, others are... not entirely legal, but tolerated, or otherwise done in a fashion that gives the slavers some form of plausible deniability. "They're not slaves, I just take all the money they make", and so forth. Part of this can be attributed to differences of culture and history, but often its just sheer sociopathy and the economic incentive.

The even crazier thing in these sort of cases is, it's usually ethnic people doing it to their own people.

Loads of cases in the UK where couples would bring over workers from their countries primarily as a nanny or housekeeper and then take their passports and enslave them.

The article describes the the nanny as having been introduced to these people by a "mutual friend". Most likely it was a recruiter who took a fee of thousands of dollars from her to get to America only to arrive to these circumstances

People can be so fucking horrible. Like, I can't comprehend how anyone can be that much of a piece of shit.

Now they just need to get their asses beat a bit in prison.

They'll get what's coming to em, thankfully.

The whole straining used cereal to get milk for her tea bit was really the rotten cherry on top that got me, just wow. The levels to which they stooped.

$100 a month would have been a damn bargain.

I'm wondering how they got the nanny into the country? What kind of visa did she have? It couldn't have been a work visa, right? I mean, you would have to pay prevailing wages to bring someone on a work visa and have to first offer the job to the local population.

There's a lot of slavery still going on in the world:

"The Global Slavery Index 2013 states that 10 nations account for 76 percent of the world's enslaved. India has the most slaves of any country, at 14 million (over 1% of the population). China has the second-largest number with 2.9 million slaves, followed by Pakistan with 2.1 million, Nigeria with 701,000, Ethiopia with 651,000, Russia with 516,000, Thailand with 473,000, Congo with 462,000, Myanmar with 384,000, and Bangladesh with 343,000.[7]

Mauritania was the last nation to officially abolish slavery, doing so in 2007; yet 4.3% of the population still remains enslaved"

That doesn't even have Qatar on the list.

Well hopefully in this case the money from the fine is given to the victim.

Right, but how do they collect the fine when the people may be in prison until they die? They can't work again to have their wages garnished etc. But I suppose any assets they had can be sold.

I hate so much that I assumed that the people who did it were other Nigerians. And got confirmed.

I shouldn't be so cynical.

The vast majority of human trafficking in the United States is done by older immigrants towards newer immigrants from the same country of origin.

Demand it from their savings and sell off their estate. I don't know if it'll cover the full $1 million, but give her whatever it may be.

Gonna take a wild guess they are Nigerian/West African. Fucking incredible. I feel sorry for this poor women and the children she was supposed to take care of.

That said, the poor woman put up with everything until she realized she wasn't getting paid. It was a wrap for that disgusting couple after that revalation.

I swear I read this before like six months ago, in the same state too. It probably just happened with a different family/women. Slavery is still common in the modern era, even in the US. Makes me feel helpless, like it's impossible to fully eradicate. ):

Yeah, once you count all the "indentured servants" throughout the world, the total number would be even less flattering.

Hell, if you want we can add in all the people who are being exploited because of low wages and having to kill themselves to survive. But we'll just leave that be...

This is what surprised me the most, you bring someone from your continent to turn in to a slave?

What ever happened to helping your countries kinsman

For what it's worth, their names were Nigerian.

On a sidenote, hopefully people don't start thinking this all Nigerians are into slavery. It's already bad enough there a stigma of us being scammers.

Couldn't even get through the first repetition of "Please don't be white" before seeing the names. That minor relief aside, what an awful story, and one that is going on all around us.

Yeah, a lot of people don't realize that slavery is still very common in developing countries and even developed countries

It's really sad :(

I feel like crying, poor woman.

Throw those two in jail until they die. Scum. I would spit on their faces if I could.

Will she go back to her country and will she see any sort of compensation from the couple? Not like anything could ever make up for how she was tortured.

black people enslaving other black people..seriously wtf texas...I hope these two douchebags get thrown in prison soon

What does that have to do with anything? People have enslaved people that looked like them throughout history, and in Haiti some of the most vociferously pro-slavery people around were free blacks. Pigmentation has no bearing on the capacity for someone to want to subjugate someone else.

I think it's partially because the kind of slavery this is talking about has by and large disappeared from developed countries (although no doubt exploiting immigrants for cheap childcare seems to always be in fashion.) The sort of stuff you hear about is usually sexual trafficking, or occasionally labor violations in a massive sense like Quatar.

The saddest part of this is it sounds like the woman was evidently going to put up with the treatment if she was at least getting paid.

whats surprising about that regardless of how they look those two sound crazy enough. And why does the choice of two reflect on Texas? Why let those two off the hook?

To jail for life with this scum. Someone who does that to another human being doesn't strike me as someone who can be properly reintegrated to society.

Yup jail em for life and give her all their shit. Hell as part of their jail time they can be put on duty working for her in her new home.

She believed she would be paid $100 a month to care for the couple’s children.

Holy fuck. Its basically slavery either way. I wonder how many people are doing this, bringing people in and working them around the clock for pennies. It looks like she would have just kept on going with it if she was being paid too.

So if I'm understanding this, it went on for 3 years? The article is written poorly.
