Texas couple brings Nigerian nanny to America — then turns her into a slave

Thank goodness for the YMCA caseworker.

That Texas couple needs to HANG.

You only gotta hang mean bastards, but mean bastards you gotta hang!

And what the fuck at that story. I don't really understand the process here. Did they just get up one day, thinking to themselves: Yeah, we really like cheap labour, and the whole slave thing was neat, so let's just go to a random African country and get us one of those?

This is what surprised me the most, you bring someone from your continent to turn in to a slave?

What ever happened to helping your countries kinsman

Something to keep in mind is that the perspective and understanding of race, ethnicity and nationality can vary from place to place, particularly outside of 'western' nations, and that's before you consider any individual issues they may have of just not giving a damn.

So yeah, they may not have really had thoughts of 'I cannot enslave a fellow Nigerian!'. If anything, they were probably thinking that it was the easier option.

Nigerian's aren't united by nationalism or patriotism. They are united by a different social order that respects power and social connections. Maybe a cultural change will occur but for now their concerns don't respect citizenship as a strong unifying point with the exception to use it as a means to make life more difficult for foreigners who haven't learned all the social rules yet.

She worked for them in Nigeria and they are most likely Nigerian, it wasn't some random country or person. It's in the OP.

Not how it works in many of these poor countries. Look at Egypt and India. They have the same type of situation, very rich and very poor. It costs nothing to have some of these poor people as servants. And mistreatment is normal. The nanny only ran to the authorities AFTER she found out she wasn't being paid. It wasn't the poor treatment that got her because I am sure she was used to that kind of treatment. I think the article mentions her working for them for a year before leaving to the U.S. with them. My guess is she was being treated the same way at home but being paid in cash.

Just sick. I really cant say anything else about the situation. I Wonder whether or not will she go back to her home country or try to continue to live here in the US.

I can't speak for other communities but let me tell you a secret. Older Nigerians living in the West that are doing well really hate other Nigerians. Personal experience yes, but my experience has left a pretty damning narrative in my head. And I fucking hate it.

So, its a thing among migrants? Is there any particular reason you can think of? Apologies, I only know some of the broad strokes of Nigerian and/or West African history.

Seems like basic "Fuck you. Got mine.".

This is in my honest opinion based on my personal experience so it's going to seem very narrow. But I ask children of immigrants to chime in please. (/disclaimer)

Some Nigerians that emigrate to places like Canada and the USA, 10 or more years ago tend to be about hustling through education either gained from back home or abroad. The ones that work really hard to live a very comfortable life or get lucky then to build a relatively comforatable lifestyle where bills can be paid without too much worry. They can be very prideful of what they have achieved and will worry about the politcal troubles that are seen back in Nigeria. Overtime, that worry of kinsmen can turn to contempt due to stereotypes they have adopted living abroad ("Nigerians are scam artists/419ers, but you 'Sola Akinyele' aren't like them. You work hard"), amongst other factors. Soon enough they may associate less and less within people within their inherited community and soon enough enter this weird state of assimilation, while still claiming multiple aspects of their culture quietly.

To hear some of the vitriol that has come out of the mouths of these people when addressing other Nigerians plights and situations, is sad and terrible.
