Thanos CGI is the best of all time

Well you know it’s a prop. Point still stands
No it doesn't, you mistook CGI for fiction. Really good CGI doesn't make people think they're actually watching a documentary. The point was that sufficiently good CGI is indistinguishable from non-CGI.

I understand what your saying. I’ve always said the same thing. CGI for explosions, car crashes etc. If it’s good you won’t realize it’s there. I get it. But if we’re talking purple aliens, squid man, LOTR trolls etc. Then you’re brain already knows it’s cgi/props and you just admire how great the work is and how real it “looks”.

Not once am I watching Thanos or any other fake character/ monster and forgetting there’s cgi involved and actually believing it’s “real”

Until he started to talk, they shouldn't have shown young Johnny talk from front on.
???
I thought that was one of the best parts, especially when he leaned forward and started talking. I was like how in the fuck are they doing that!?

Turns out it was a mixture of an actor + deepfake + additional CG.

Edit: Here’s the clip, best CGI I’ve ever seen.
Even Marvel could take some pointers here.

Nah, as soon as he says "You wanted him to be like you", it all falls apart unfortunately. Similar to Luke in the Mandalorian, as long as he isn't talking, he looks great.
It's the way the mouth moves, it's very unnatural. The yes are also very unnatural and dead looking.

I respectfully disagree, but each to their own.

It's not a prop, it's an actor in a costume.

Maybe I've misread the post I replied to originally. I assumed you were suggesting CGI effect were better then practical effects.
Mea culpa.
Nah I’m pro practical effects. But they’re very limited when trying to bring some non-humans to life. Thanos for example wouldn’t work

This scene blew me away in theatres. Beautiful shot. Star Wars still shits on most movies when it comes to special effects. Sequel trilogy had some great work
Fundamentally changes how light speed works.

Thanos isn't even the best CGI in his own movies, let alone of all time.

Avatar is the best pure CGI I've ever seen.

Looks like a dumb cartoon.

Light speed was never a weapon. Then with Hodo maneuvers it becomes a weapon. So much so they have to dismiss it in the next movie. Nobody ever worried about fuel in SW until that film either. The scene is cool, but that change in lore from all other SW was dumb. If it works like this why didn’t the rebels just light speed into the Death Star.
TBH I don’t know why they didn’t? Is there a reason why no one thought of it at the time? Is there a reason why it wouldn’t work? Just because it hasn’t been done, doesn’t mean it doesn’t make sense.

Then again the it didn’t even destroy the supremacy. Half the ship was operational after the fact. If she did that to the Death Star it would probably just scratch it when you compare the size. I also doubt the rebels have bigger ships than that to spare

No one flew planes into ships before the Japanese did. At least of what I know

Davy Jones easily.
As for CG in general, it might just be me but the last 6-7 year's it's started to become noticeable.
But I put on a film from 10 years ago and the CG is fantastic

No one can match Marvel’s pace and output even Marvel. COVID was probably the best thing to happen to them because it’s given phase 5 CGI more time to bake vs something like Black Panther which was rushed out in Disney’s insane 3 Marvel films a year schedule: overall the film looked good but that Killmonger vs Panther fight was inexcusably bad.

For me though I have to vote Davy Jones and Rogue One as ILMs best work: he looks like something made of latex and the Star destroyers look like the models in 4K.

still not sure how a movie from 1993 still looks better than most of today's cgi

See above its pace of production: JP was like a 4-5 year project instead of a 2 year or less turnaround like many films today and Phil Tippet (the dude behind Raiders and Star Wars stop motion) gave them pointers on movement animation for a crude form of MoCap.

Good believable CGI takes time and for some studio heads “good enough” is all they want.

I used to say the same, and kind of still agree, BUT i saw this clip a while ago, its a clip from the upcoming Ultra HD release -

Check out how bad the Brachiosaur looks like in this definition, its 5:05 onwards.

Ir actually made me upset a bit when i saw this vid. At this definition JP is sarting to looks its age unfortunately.

Because Han Solo said that it was bad for the ship in light speed that ran into something and not really that bad for what got run into. The ship at light speed vaporized if they passed through something.

When did he say that? I’ve watched the movies millions of times and do not recall that at all. Unless it was in totally different wording. He does say putting in the wrong coordinates could cause you to smash into an asteroid or something like that. But I’m not sure if that’s what you’re referencing

4K honestly doesn’t do many old films with practical favors either. Even the Star Wars OT looks out dated when you can see paint texturing on Vader’s helmet or obvious latex textures which used to not be an issue at lower resolutions. It’s most obvious in Star Wars ANH but Empire and Return of the Jedi look a lot worse now in 4K because it’s almost too much detail. Also…I really didn’t need to see Tin Man’s silver garbage bag underwear in 4K (that is not Oz’s Ass) but at least it disproves that dumb urban myth of a munchkin hanging himself on set since you can very clearly see it’s an exotic bird flapping it’s wings and puffing out it’s chest.

Is there any better CGI?

Ya, the Weta people do great digital humanoids (or even humans), if they're given a shitload of money.

You gotta be high and out your fucking mind to equate this to a cartoon or video game CGI. This is levels above. Of course everyone has their opinion but doing drugs while forming those opinions can also be a thing.

Apart from some of the explosions that looks a little weird in the final battle, AVATAR is still the benchmark imo. Well until AVATAR 2 ironically.
The film took an average of 46 hours to render a single frame for a reason.

I haven't seen it, but are the last two gifs slowed down? It doesn't do them any favours, especially in the 2nd where it makes it look less "real"

You might be right about the drugs because I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

There is a softness or smoothness to the animation that seems to miss out on details unique to individual facial structures or something. It's at its worst when characters speak.

It's the same thing that takes me out of deepfake examples like the Cobra Kai clip ITT. If I had to guess its a combination of the lighting and mouth movements

I don't care if you hate the movie. This looks like a cut scene directly from the 80s, and it's a technical marvel.

That's the handiwork of ILM

" ILM has been closely associated with the Terminator franchise since first contributing to James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day back in the early 1990s. For this installment in the series, we were tasked with creating digitally de-aged versions of Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor, Edward Furlong as John Connor, and Arnold Schwartzenegger as the T-800 as they had appeared in Judgment Day. "

Lotsa digital doubles were used in that film, though.

ya or have a droid pilot a ship to lightspeed into it. then you dont even need to have one person (from your side) die.
