I been seeing this trend, stereotype, whatever since I was little. What is up with walking around in the middle of winter with no clothes on like it's not cold? Maybe it's just a MI thing. I've seen it downtown Detroit, the burbs and MSU at East Lansing. People hopping around in November with shorts and flip-flops. Doing business while it's snowing HEAVY in jeans, a turtleneck and no coat. And today I saw a teacher come in out of 4" of snow with sandals. Like it's hot July night on Belle Isle.

Sure it's not all of them, but damn. Black, asian, Arab, Xicano. White people are the ONLY ones I've ever seen do this. And it happens alot. I saw a Redwings being let out and all I could think was "Do you not feel this? Doesn't this fucking HURT?".

Well I live where it gets to around -40 on a regular basis in winter so when we get -5 weather I don't feel like putting on a jacket either. I'm white and live in Canada by the way.

We are secretely an evil race of snow people that come from the south pole. This is why we are called white people.

I dunno, I suppose it goes with people who like the cold

I'm (hot sexy romantic latin lover) Cuban and I'm wearin my sandals, board shorts and t shirt tomorrow morning to school when its like 30 degrees (Which is pretty cold for this area). I'll be outside marching the flight around too soooo, guess I just <3 the cold :D

I don't know about the rest, but I'm awfully warm blooded. I can resist a lot of cold. Probably the scandinavian genes in me, too. And the living in Canada thing.

To flip it around, why is it most black people in my area seem to wear big heavy clothes (including jackets and clothes) during the middle of summer.

Some fat white dude in my 1st year English class used to always wear shorts to class.
This is in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada - during the winter.

Crazy fat white dude! Maybe he lived on res, I dunno.

I'm one of those people who gets asked "aren't you cold" a whole lot. Think of it this way, you're going from one heated place for a few hours to another heated place for a few hours, with travel time being a few measley minutes. Which environment should you dress for? I just don't want to bother with a coat and hat, etc. when I'm only going to need them for a few minutes in between places I'm going.

:lol The shorts in winter always baffled me. I always just rationalized it by thinking to myself that maybe they are at the end of their laundry cycle, or maybe they just got out of the gym. I do it sometimes nowadays myself, nothing like shorts, but I will go outside in cold as fuck weather with no coat, but only because I wear a lot of long johns and underwear for work. :lol

Me? Unless it's a REALLY calm day I don't like having my body exposed. Besides when you're working, relaxing shit anything clothes just "feel" right to me.

Hahaha, I remember having this conversation with a black girl my Junior year of high-school. I showed up to class in January wearing shorts (in Fremont, California mind you...it was probably in the 40's or 50's) and she started telling me off. I was laughing, it was all in good fun, but our teacher was trying to get her to shut up.

"What's the matter with you man? Wearin shorts on a day like this, that shit's CO-WULD man! Shit, white people be killin me sometimes..."

Think about where white people come from. It also explains the general complexion that they have. We are pale for a reason, because most of our ancestors came from cold, cloudy, rainy Europe!

I used to live fairly near Detroit and never really noticed it. I have the cold and half the time wear jeans in the summer.

If I'm wearing long jeans and being somewhat active I'm perfectly fine without a coat(I rarely wear long-sleeve shirts if I'm not dressing formal) to around 40F. Below that I can still manage but it's not as if my body keeps itself from physically getting cold... I don't pack much of my own insulation. ;)

Add wind to the picture, and I need to suit up, definitely.

:lol :lol :lol :lol OMG! ALL my black friends talk about the same observation. I've just never went up to a white guy and asked, "Hey. Why aren't you wearing a hat/coat/pants (instead of shorts)/long sleeve shirt?" :)

hahaha, dude, this black girl asked my buddy the same question awhile back. "Why don't white people wear coats?"

I dont wear a coat either, man, and its snowing like a motherfucker. 14" up here at CMU by the time tomorrow rolls around.

Generally, if it gets below 10 degree, i'll start wearing a coat. But while its in the 20's I can manage. Its just less shit to lug around, ya know?

oh yeah, and for the shorts things.... i can't STAND These yooper fucks who walk around in shorts when its 20 below just to look the hardass. I mean, when its 20 that's one thing. I can cope with that, I can understand it. but once it hits negative digits, man... you're nuts if you've got skin showing and you're walking more than a hundred yards.

It's not just black people that ponder over white peoples' inability to feel cold: Japanese people do it, too. I always get "Samui kunai no?" (Aren't you cold?) when I'm wearing anything in winter. No one ever says to me, "Atakai so." (Looks warm.) Then again, Japanese schoolgirls wear skirts all year round, but nobody seems concerned for them.

I remember when I was seven, I went to visit my father in Alaska. It was summer, so it was a brisk 65-70 degrees outside. I was freezing, wearing my coat, but there were kids out there in shorts on slip'n'slides.

I love cold weather. I just don't act a fool (t-shirts, flip-flops) when it's cold.

Stijn Devolder (a team-mate of Lance Armstrong's) ran the Het Volk cycling race in Belgium last Saturday in shorts. It was -1 degree C, with a windchill deep into the negative F range even without considering the thought of riding a bicycle at 25 mph through it. It snowed and rained, too.

And then the next day, he did it again at Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne. Sheesh.

hey odoul, i'm from dearborn heights, mi man! :D

i'm also whiter than the freaking snow on the ground. :lol

tis true what you say though. i'm guilty of it myself. i simply don't bundle up. i still wear my spring jacket in 20 below weather.

why? i really don't know. i figure if i'm going inside a store or mall, i don't want to sweat my ass off and have to take off my jacket and carry it around.

also, though the odds are very, very remote, i figure if i ever get into a physical confronation with someone else that i won't be handicapped by a huge ass deep sea diving winter coat. :D kinda like the hockey players throwing off their big ass gloves in a hockey fight.

Same here, I tend to get hot very easily. In fact I actually get too hot if I bother wearing a jacket or coat, and then I only use it going to and from a vehicle or home/building.

That's not enough time to justify overheating and sweating to me, once I sweat and it's cold out with wind blowing I get very cold and end up sick.

I keep dressing casual, it suits me.

Going from really very very cold to just below freezing tends to make you chuck your jacket. I'm brown and living in Canada btw.
